Now reading: Chapter 166: Instant Acceleration from Cyberpunk: Ultimate Cyborg System, a Sci-fi novel by Nomanalive.

Instant Acceleration. Though the na speaks for itself, one would struggle to imagine its effects without experiencing it first, and activating it by mistake didn’t help at all.

Everything suddenly shed into itself, turning into one indiscernible blur, then ca the unmistakable pull of g-force, adding to the strain born from the armor. For a mont there, Dante’s vision darkened a little, and an ominous sensation enveloped his mind, ringing several alarm bells.

Things cald down as he began to slow down, and once his feet touched the ground once more, he gradually recovered from the awful sensation that had overwheld him. Dante allowed the inertia to carry him for a while before slowing down to normal sprinting speed, paying no mind to the pedestrians watching him from the side.

’That was... sick!’

The protest had blocked all traffic, and with most of it being focused on the front of the city hall, the streets in the area behind it were left strangely empty, giving him the freedom he needed. Taking a turn, Dante once again found himself on a largely empty street. With nothing barring his path, he put strength into his right foot and once again activated Instant Acceleration.

The world blurred and the pull of g-force assaulted his body, but more than anything, it was the intense sensation of achieving such a high speed that affected Dante the most, sending him straight to cloud nine.

The fastest he had gone before was about 400 km/h, but that was while riding the Raven on an empty highway. The gradual acceleration toward that speed was nothing compared to the sudden burst granted by Type 5-1, which, according to Volcan, allowed him to achieve the speed of sound in a matter of 0.5 seconds.

’I can’t believe it...’ Dante thought as he began to slow down. ’Why didn’t I try this before!?’

Every ti he tried a new armor, Dante always found himself amazed by the capabilities each one possessed. It made him furious that he didn’t get the chances to properly test them, but at the sa ti, his anticipation for the kind of powers waiting for him was a constant source of excitent.

He wished that he could just keep running in a straight line, reactivating Instant Acceleration whenever he began to slow down. Sadly, he had a plan to follow and a mission to finish, and until he was done with that, enjoying the insane ability of his armor would have to wait.

Glancing at the map in the corner of his field of vision, Dante took in the red path Volcan drew, which led to the two spies he planned on getting rid of. Instead of following it directly, however, he decided on a slight detour, trying to ensure they wouldn’t see him coming.

Activating Instant Acceleration two more tis, he circled around the first block barring his way, but when he was about to go for a third one, he noticed that the path ahead of him was blocked. It was then that he felt like he fully understood why the armor he currently wore was just a Level 1 and not higher.

Type 5-1 allowed him to move at the speed of sound, true, but that was only for the short duration that followed the activation of its main ability. The initial burst results in a straightforward movent, giving him no chance to make any adjustnts along the way. Because of that, if sothing were to appear in his path as he accelerates, he would undoubtedly run straight into it.

It’s for that reason why he couldn’t accelerate right away after spotting a crowd of people on the other end of his path.

He had to make his choice in less than a second, and after absorbing everything in the path ahead, he was ready to do so

Instant Acceleration works in a straight line, but there is no rule that dictates in which direction said line has to point. Picking a distant point, Dante crouched down and prepared to jump, activating the armor’s ability just as he was about to push off the ground.

The boom that followed his accelerated jump shook the street and created a blast of wind that spread all the way to the crowd. With it being his first ti trying the move, Dante ended up misjudging the distance, leading him to smash into the fourth floor of his targeted building.

Before the bricks could collapse under his soles, he took off running on the wall, crossing a short distance before activating Instant Acceleration once more. This ti, he chose a much farther point for his landing, drastically reducing the impact. From there, he made a few more jumps, keeping to high altitudes and using the building and street signs as footing whenever he needed one.

’Can’t you make it so I can control how much I can accelerate?’ Dante asked.

[That is already possible.] Volcan replied. [You simply have to focus on the amount of energy you consu]

Dante felt his face twitch a little. It was going to take so experintation to get a handle on that part.

[Speaking of. Dante, you have to pay attention to your energy consumption.]

Following Volcan’s warning, a small notification appeared on the bottom left of Dante’s field of vision, showing that he only had 60/100. If each acceleration consud about five energy points, he would have about 12 full bursts left, which was more than enough. He was already at his target, after all, and with how fast he went, he still had three entire minutes with Type 5-1.

[Dante, one of the targets is about to send a report.] Said Volcan, reminding him of a crucial part of the plan.

’Go ahead.’ Dante thought aloud. ’Change it.’

A ssage that reported being discovered by Fla Guard might not have been very necessary, but Dante chose to send one anyway. At the very least, it would force whoever sent the spies to look more into how they ended up getting themselves into such a predicant.

Reaching the street with the building his targets were on, Dante accelerated one more ti and launched himself in the air. He could see them already, but from the looks of it, they had yet to notice his approach.

The hunters had just beco the hunted. As he landed on the other side of the roof, Dante braced himself for his first fight against a pair of wizards.
