[POV – Rito]

[Sainan Sports Festival]

It had been a few days since I returned from the Vatican. Well, "returned" is kind of a weird word, since my life had turned into a carousel of encounters with archangels, demons, and even infinite dragons. But back I was, and in a way, happy to breathe the air of normal life… or at least a slightly twisted version of it.

Of course, normality didn't last even a week. Because, along with , two new tenants arrived in Sainan: Irina Shidou and Xenovia Quarta. Yes, exactly. Angels. Studying at the sa school. Living in the sa town. The universe definitely doesn't like giving a break.

And, as if that wasn't enough, I got back just in ti for the Sainan High Sports Festival.

— The festival is about to begin! — the teacher announced over the microphone, as colorful flags fluttered in the wind.

It was as if fate had put back on the board at the worst possible ti.

On the stage, of course, who took the lead was Saki.

— Ladies and gentlen — she began, full of herself, adjusting her hair as if it were a crown — today you will witness beauty in its purest form!

The crowd fell silent, but her fan club was already clapping like she was a crowned queen.

— Lala Satalin Deviluke! — Saki pointed a finger in challenge. — I challenge you at this festival!

Lala, as always, grinned ear to ear.

— Wow, really? That sounds fun! I accept!

Great. It was official: this festival was about to turn into a circus.

The first event was the boys' race.

— Yuuki Rito! — Ren appeared before , chest puffed out and an arrogant smile. — I challenge you.

— Not again… — I muttered, sweating nervously.

— Today, Lala-sama will see who truly deserves her love! — he declared, as if he were the protagonist of so cheap romantic shonen ani.

I sighed. I could just speed up a little and beat him — after all, cheating with divine power would be unfair — but if I ran "normally," I'd end up tripping. Eternal dilemma.

— Get ready… — shouted the referee.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

— Go!

Piii!

We bolted forward. Ren ran like he had wings. I ran trying not to stumble. Lala shouted excitedly from the stands:

— Go, Rito-kun! You can do it!

Plop, plop, plop. Each of my steps kicked up dust and my dignity along with it.

At the finish line, Ren opened the challenge slip. He read. Froze.

— "Find the Legendary Sword from Another World"? — he repeated, looking around desperately.

The crowd burst into laughter.

— Go, Ren! Search for it! — soone shouted.

anwhile, I could only break into a cold sweat.

— What kind of race ends with a magical sword hunt?! — I thought, in disbelief.

And there was Ren, running around, lifting cones, rummaging through bags, as if he'd actually find Excalibur behind the bleachers.

Next up was Sempai Motemitsu. He thought he was hot stuff, always surrounded by sycophants. The event was simple: pick a random slip and complete the written challenge.

He opened the slip, read it, and his smile glead:

— "Win soone's love today."

Drama.

He fell theatrically to his knees before Lala.

— Lala Satalin Deviluke! — he cried, stretching out his arms. — Would you give your love? Please, just today, give it to !

— No, no, definitely not! — Lala replied, shaking her head but still smiling as if she found it amusing.

And of course, Motemitsu's lackeys applauded like it was a presidential speech:

— As expected of Sempai!

— Only soone as special as you could say that!

I just wanted to vanish.

Finally, my turn ca. I sighed deeply.

I picked up my slip.

Read it.

Froze.

"Recently used bloors."

Silence.

My legs went weak. I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or throw myself under the stage.

— What kind of event is this?! — I muttered, breaking into a cold sweat.

I could've used a spell, conjured so solution, but… no. Cheating would be worse.

And before I could even think of quitting, Lala hopped in.

— Don't worry, Rito-kun! I'll fix this!

— No, no, don't fix anything, Lala!

— Push-kun! Osei, osei!

Boom!

Out of nowhere, her jet robots appeared. They grabbed by the arms like tallic bear hugs.

— Ready, Master Rito! — they beeped.

— I'm not—

Vroooom!

And off I went, shot through the sky, launched like a human missile toward the other students.

The crowd scread.

— This is amazing! — soone cheered.

— This is insane! — another shouted.

But, as always, fate decided to ss with .

Thud!

I landed right on top of soone at the end of the track.

Plop.

Dead silence.

When I opened my eyes… it was Haruna.

I was on top of her.

And, by so cruel twist of fate, my hands had ended up exactly where they shouldn't: on her butt.

— R-Rito-kun!!! — she exploded, her face redder than a tomato.

— I swear, it wasn't on purpose!!! — I replied, nearly panicking.

The stares from the bleachers were a mix of envy, shock, and laughter.

Asia covered her mouth, horrified. Mikan covered her eyes, muttering "idiot." Irina and Xenovia, the new arrivals, stared with faces that said, "Is this really the guy they call Father?"

And … I just wanted to dig a hole in the ground and never co out again.

That festival might have started as just another chance to play at being a normal student, but it didn't take long to turn into, as always, a battlefield between fate, bad luck, and Lala's madness.

And I knew, deep down, this was nothing compared to what was still to co.

Because every ti I tried to be just Yuuki Rito… the universe made sure to remind I was so much more.
