The request hung in the air.

Simple.

Yet deeply personal.

For a mont, Xandros said nothing.

He simply watched her.

Watched the way she held Lily, the way her composure shifted....not for herself, but for soone else.

Then his gaze softened—just slightly.

"Very well," he said.

Rosaline exhaled softly, relief washing over her in a quiet wave.

"Thank you."

The carriage doors were opened.

Lily leaned slightly against her as they approached, her steps slow but determined.

Rosaline guided her carefully, ensuring she was steady before helping her inside.

Then she followed.

Settling beside her.

The space was enclosed, quiet, separate from the chaos outside.

For the first ti since morning.....

She felt sothing close to stillness.

Outside, preparations continued.

Xandros remained where he stood for a mont longer, watching the carriage.

Then he turned.

And moved toward another.

The courtyard had not yet settled.

Even after the formalities of departure had been announced, even after the nobles had begun to disperse into clusters of murmured conversations and veiled curiosity, sothing remained suspended in the air....a tension that refused to dissolve. It lingered in the way heads turned, in the subtle pauses between words, in the quiet, watchful glances cast toward the line of carriages awaiting departure.

Because sothing unexpected had happened.

And no one....not even those closest to the Duke....fully understood why.

Seth stood a short distance away, his arms loosely folded, though the ease in his posture was deceptive. His gaze remained fixed on the carriage Rosaline had entered with Lily, his brows drawn ever so slightly as though trying to piece together sothing that did not align with what he knew of his lord.

"That... was unusual," he murmured under his breath.

One of the Dagon attendants nearby shifted slightly. "His Grace does not often accommodate requests."

Seth exhaled faintly, his lips curving in sothing that was not quite amusent.

"No," he agreed. "He doesn’t."

His eyes narrowed just a fraction.

"And yet..."

He let the thought trail off, unfinished.

Because even he could not define it.

The sound of boots against stone broke the mont.

Xandros approached.

His expression was as composed as ever, revealing nothing of what lay beneath, nothing of what he had considered or chosen. He moved past them without pause, heading directly toward the carriage Rosaline had entered.

Seth straightened slightly.

His attention sharpened.

Others noticed too.

Conversations faltered.

Eyes followed.

Because there was sothing deliberate in the Duke’s movent now.....sothing that drew attention without demanding it.

He stopped before the carriage.

For a brief mont, he simply stood there.

Then....

He knocked.

A single, firm rap against the wooden fra.

Silence fell.

Inside the carriage, Rosaline’s breath stilled.

Lily, who had been leaning slightly against her, lifted her head weakly, her expression shifting with uncertainty.

"My lady..." she whispered.

Rosaline’s hand tightened gently around hers.

"It’s alright," she said softly, though her own heartbeat had begun to quicken again.

Outside, Seth stepped closer, his gaze flickering between the Duke and the carriage door.

Then, almost casually....

"You may enter."

The words left him before anyone could question them.

There was a pause.

A mont of stillness that stretched just long enough to make those watching wonder...

Would he?

Would he truly....

The door opened.

Inside, the carriage felt smaller the mont he entered.

Not because of space—

But because of presence.

Xandros stepped in with quiet ease, his gaze imdiately settling on the two figures before him.

Rosaline sat upright, her posture composed despite the tension in her shoulders, while Lily leaned slightly into her, her condition impossible to ignore at this distance.

There were marks.

Faint bruising along her arms.

A subtle stiffness in the way she held herself.

Evidence enough.

Xandros’ gaze lingered on her briefly before shifting back to Rosaline.

"You requested her presence," he said.

Rosaline nodded once.

"Yes."

There was no apology in her tone.

No hesitation.

Only quiet resolve.

Xandros studied her for a mont longer.

Then his gaze returned to Lily.

"You were treated poorly," he said, his voice calm, though not without weight.

Lily blinked, startled slightly by the directness.

"It’s nothing, my lord," she said quickly, lowering her gaze. "I am grateful to be allowed to accompany her."

A pause followed.

Then.....

"My Empire does not tolerate such negligence," Xandros said.

The statent was not loud.

Not forceful.

Yet it carried an unmistakable edge.

"For that," he added, his gaze steady, "you have my apology."

Lily looked up in surprise.

Rosaline did too.

The words were unexpected.

Not because they were grand.....

But because they were sincere.

Lily bowed her head quickly. "Thank you, my lord."

Xandros inclined his head slightly, then turned toward the door.

Without another word....

He stepped out.

The carriage shifted into motion shortly after.

The wheels began to turn, the steady rhythm of travel replacing the stillness of the palace grounds. Outside, voices faded, the grandeur of Everbloom slowly giving way to the quiet expanse of the open road.

Inside, the atmosphere softened.

Rosaline exhaled slowly, her hand still resting gently against Lily’s arm.

"...Are you alright?" she asked quietly.

Lily smiled faintly.

"I should be asking you that," she replied.

Rosaline shook her head slightly, a small, almost tired smile touching her lips.

"Silly girl," she murmured. "Focus on yourself."

Lily’s gaze softened.

"I will be fine," Rosaline added, her voice steady now. "As long as you are safe... I will always be fine."

Lily looked at her for a long mont.

Then nodded.

The journey stretched on.

Hours turned into night.

The passage of ti blurred into a steady rhythm of movent, the world outside shifting from the cultivated lands of Everbloom into unfamiliar terrain....darker forests, wider plains, the distant silhouettes of mountains rising against the horizon.

By the touch of the night, the caravan ca to a halt.

Tents were raised quickly, efficiently, forming a temporary encampnt under the open sky. Lanterns were lit, casting warm pools of light against the surrounding darkness, while guards took their positions along the periter.

Rosaline stepped down from the carriage slowly, her eyes lifting to take in the unfamiliar surroundings.

This.....

Was her new world.

Or at least, the path toward it.

Lily was guided away carefully by attendants, a maid from Dagon assigned to her care, her movents gentle, practiced, ensuring she was tended to properly.

Rosaline watched until she disappeared into one of the tents.

Only then did she turn.

Her own tent stood slightly apart.

Larger.

More elaborate.

Prepared for her.

She stepped inside.

And paused.

The interior was spacious, adorned with fine fabrics and carefully arranged furnishings that softened the otherwise temporary structure. A bed had been prepared, draped in dark linens, a low table set near it with a small lantern casting a steady glow.

It was... comfortable.

Too comfortable.

For sothing that felt so uncertain.

Rosaline moved further in, her fingers brushing lightly against the fabric lining the walls as though grounding herself in sothing tangible.

This is it.

Her chest tightened faintly.

How am I supposed to survive this?

Her thoughts circled endlessly.

The marriage.

The journey.

The unknown Empire that awaited her.

And him.

Always....

Him.

Her breath grew uneven as she turned slightly, her gaze falling to the bed.

Do I...

Do we...

She exhaled sharply, running a hand through her hair in quiet frustration.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered under her breath.

And yet.....

Her heart refused to calm.

The sound of the entrance shifting broke her thoughts.

She turned.

Xandros stepped inside.

His presence filled the space imdiately, his gaze finding her where she stood.

"You seem troubled," he observed.

Rosaline straightened instinctively.

"I am not."

He said nothing for a mont.

Simply watched her.

Then.....

"You will have to make do with this arrangent tonight," he said, his tone even.

"We continue the journey in the morning."

Rosaline blinked.

"...We are sleeping here?"

He raised a brow slightly.

"Why not?"

She hesitated.

Her mind stumbled over itself, thoughts tangling in a way that made even simple responses difficult.

"I just..." she began, then stopped, her cheeks warming slightly. "I did not think...."

"That we would share a space?" he finished calmly.

Her silence was answer enough.

A faint shift touched his expression....sothing that might have been amusent.

"You forget," he said, stepping slightly closer, "we are married."

Rosaline inhaled sharply.

"That’s not what I ant," she said quickly.

"Then what did you an?"

"I—"

She faltered.

Then, almost defensively, she gestured toward the bed.

"You should rest," she said. "It has been a long day."

He did not move.

Did not respond imdiately.

Instead....

He began to walk toward her.

Slowly.

Each step deliberate.

asured.

Rosaline’s breath caught.

Her back stiffened slightly as she remained where she stood, her gaze fixed on him as he closed the distance between them.

A step

Another

And another.....

The air shifted.

Tightened.

And she realized....

Too late,

That she had nowhere to step back to.
