The silence in the chamber did not feel empty....it felt occupied.

Rosaline stood just a few steps inside the room, her fingers loosely clasped before her as her gaze remained fixed on the woman standing at the far end. There was nothing outwardly threatening about her appearance; in fact, she was strikingly beautiful, dressed in deep-toned fabric that clung elegantly to her fra, her posture relaxed yet deliberate. But it was not her beauty that unsettled Rosaline.....it was the way she carried herself. The way she stood there as though she belonged. As though this room, this space, this palace... answered to her.

"...Who are you?" Rosaline asked, her voice steady despite the faint unease curling beneath it.

The woman’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile, as though she had expected the question long before it was asked. She took her ti before responding, stepping forward with asured grace, her gaze sweeping over Rosaline in quiet assessnt.

"I suppose introductions are necessary," she said lightly. "I am Seraphine... Xandros’ cousin."

The na lingered in the air.

Rosaline’s expression shifted only slightly, though her eyes sharpened with interest.

"I see."

Seraphine did not stop walking. She moved further into the room, her steps unhurried, her presence expanding into the space as though she had every right to it. Her fingers brushed lightly along the edge of a table, then the back of a chair, her attention drifting not because she was distracted....but because she was comfortable.

Too comfortable.

Rosaline noticed.

Her brow lifted faintly.

Seraphine noticed that too.

"Oh," she said with a soft, amused breath. "You’re observant. That’s good."

Her gaze flickered back to Rosaline, sothing sharper now hidden beneath the pleasant tone.

"But you’ll find," she added, her voice lowering just slightly, "that titles matter here."

Rosaline’s posture straightened instinctively.

"I am aware of that."

"Are you?" Seraphine tilted her head, her expression unreadable for a mont. Then she smiled again....lighter this ti, but no less deliberate.

"My only princess," she said smoothly, "is Lily."

There was a pause.

Lily blinked in confusion.

Rosaline’s brows drew together slightly, the aning of the statent not imdiately clear.....but the tone behind it unmistakable.

A challenge.

Then.....

A soft snicker.

Seraphine lifted a hand lightly to her lips, as though suppressing her own amusent.

"Oh," she said, almost carelessly. "Why should she be a princess anyway? Today is the day she becos the Duke’s bride."

Her gaze slid back to Rosaline.

Lingering.

Assessing.

"...Ah," she added after a beat, feigning realization. "My mistake. Duchess."

The word settled differently.

Heavier.

More deliberate.

Rosaline inhaled slowly, keeping her composure intact, though sothing in Seraphine’s delivery unsettled her more than she cared to admit.

And then....

Seraphine’s expression shifted again.

Subtly.

As though she had just realized sothing amusing.

"Duchess... of what, exactly?" she murmured.

The question hung.

Light.

Casual.

And yet....

Sharp.

Rosaline’s lips parted.

And then.....

She stopped.

Because she didn’t know.

The realization ca quickly, quietly, but with enough force to make her chest tighten slightly.

She did not know his full na.

Not properly.

Not in the way she should.

Heat rose faintly to her face, and she turned her head slightly, just enough to hide the brief flicker of embarrassnt that crossed her expression.

Seraphine saw it.

Of course she did.

A soft, almost delighted sound escaped her.

"...How unfortunate."

Rosaline exhaled slowly, steadying herself.

Then she turned back.

Composed once more.

"If you would excuse us," she said, her tone calm but firm, "I am not feeling well and would like to rest."

She reached for Lily’s hand as she spoke, the gesture subtle but intentional.

A quiet signal.

Lily understood imdiately.

Seraphine stilled for a mont, her gaze shifting between them, her expression unreadable.

Then she straightened.

Her eyes moved over Rosaline slowly....from head to toe....taking in every detail with quiet precision, as though committing it to mory.

"Of course," she said finally.

But her tone carried sothing else now.

Sothing colder.

She turned.

And walked toward the door.

Without another word.

Without another glance.

She left.

The door remained slightly ajar behind her.

Rosaline stared at it for a mont, her brows knitting faintly as she waited...expecting, perhaps, the sound of it closing.

It didn’t co.

She exhaled softly.

"...She didn’t even close the door."

Lily followed her gaze, then moved quickly, stepping forward to shut it firmly before turning back.

"That woman..." Lily muttered, her tone laced with irritation. "There’s sothing wrong with her."

Rosaline allowed herself a small, tired smile.

"You noticed that too?"

"I noticed everything," Lily replied imdiately, crossing her arms slightly. "The way she walked in like she owned the place, the way she spoke to you....no respect at all. And calling herself his cousin..."

Her expression darkened slightly.

"I don’t like it."

Rosaline moved further into the room, her fingers brushing lightly against the fabric of the curtains as she considered Lily’s words.

"She was testing ," she said quietly.

Lily nodded.

"Exactly."

There was a pause.

Then Lily stepped closer, lowering her voice slightly.

"And I don’t think that’s all," she added. "The way she spoke about the Duke... it didn’t feel like simple family."

Rosaline’s gaze shifted.

"What do you an?"

"I don’t know yet," Lily admitted, her expression thoughtful. "But it didn’t feel distant. It felt..." she hesitated, searching for the right word. "...personal."

Rosaline remained silent for a mont.

Then she nodded slowly.

"Then we find out."

Lily’s eyes lit up slightly.

"Yes. That’s what I was thinking."

Rosaline turned to her fully now, her expression more focused.

"Carefully," she added.

"Of course," Lily said quickly, though there was already a hint of determination in her tone that suggested she intended to do more than just observe.

Rosaline noticed.

But said nothing.

For now.

A knock ca at the door.

Soft.

asured.

Both of them turned.

Lily moved first, opening it slightly to reveal a line of servants standing outside, each carrying neatly folded garnts, accessories, and various items arranged with careful precision.

"My lady," one of them said, bowing slightly. "Your things."

Rosaline blinked.

"My things?"

"Yes, my lady. Prepared in advance."

They entered quietly, placing the items throughout the room with practiced efficiency.....gowns laid out carefully, shoes arranged, jewelry placed neatly upon the dressing table.

Rosaline watched.

Sothing about it stirred an unexpected feeling within her.

Warmth.

Subtle.

But real.

He prepared this....

The thought ca quietly.

Unspoken.

She exhaled slowly, her shoulders relaxing just slightly.

"...Thank you," she said.

The servants bowed once more before leaving as quietly as they had entered.

When the door closed again, the room felt different.

Less unfamiliar.

Less distant.

Lily turned toward her, a small smile forming.

"See? It’s not all bad."

Rosaline nodded faintly.

"No... it isn’t."

She took a deep breath.

And let it out slowly.

Night approached quickly.

And with it.....

Dinner.

A maid arrived to escort Rosaline to the dining hall, her movents respectful, her voice soft as she guided her through the now dimly lit corridors of the palace.

The atmosphere had changed again.

Quieter.

More contained.

Rosaline followed in silence, her thoughts drifting as they walked.

When they arrived, she was seated at the table.

Alone.

The room was grand, though less overwhelming than the palace halls of Everbloom. Candles flickered softly along the table, casting warm light that danced across the polished surface.

She waited.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Her gaze shifted occasionally toward the entrance.

Still—

Nothing.

Finally, the butler stepped forward.

"My lady," he said gently, "His Grace will not be joining you this evening."

Rosaline’s expression stilled.

"I see."

There was no explanation offered.

And she did not ask.

"...You may begin your al," he added.

She nodded once.

"Thank you."

She reached for the utensils slowly, her movents asured, though her thoughts lingered elsewhere.

On the empty seat across from her.

On the absence that suddenly felt more noticeable than she expected.

And then....

The doors opened.

Rosaline looked up.

And there she was.

Seraphine.

Standing at the entrance.

Smiling.

As though she had been expected all along.

Rosaline’s grip tightened slightly.

Her gaze sharpened.

And for the first ti since arriving.....

She understood.

This was not going to be simple.
