Faced with Michael's interrogation, Bruce countered with nothing but a carefree smile.
Michael was practically dying of frustration.
True, he couldn't kill Bruce because, at the mont, Bruce had Gabriel's wings--angels weren't allowed to harm their brothers and sisters--but that didn't an Michael didn't have a way to deal with Bruce. He ordered Bruce to clean up Lake Eden.
But this task was anything but simple. On the way to Lake Eden, Lucifer, who carried the tools for Bruce, said: "There might be sothing in that lake that couldn't be found in any ordinary one--though I'm reluctant to admit it, but you should've seen by now--if a fish can slap over, even when I was just a child, you should know that they can knock the shit out of you."
"Didn't it die?" Bruce retorted.
Lucifer paused, turned to look at Bruce, who spread his hands out and said, "Otherwise why make it a lake and not a river? It would have been the sa if I had put the energy into a river. I knew you've had your eye on that fish for a long ti, so when it keeled over, I fished it out and buried it under a tree. Why do you think I asked you to bring the grill?"
Lucifer glanced down at the bucket filled with cleaning supplies in his hand, but found no grill. Less than a second later, after a brief internal struggle, they had a grill.
On the way there, Lucifer seed delighted, "I can't understand why your professor rejected your PhD application so many tis. You're thoughtful, that's a sign of proficiency in psychology."
Just as Bruce was about to respond modestly, Lucifer winked at him and said, "However, don't expect that these small favors can bribe . Besides, my advice carries little weight when it cos to arrogance, especially in psychology."
"You know he always emphasizes in his complaints to God that I have no idea who Hegel is. But I was drunk at that ti; who in their right mind would ask a drunkard about the significance of soone who sounds like his one-night stand?"
Bruce heaved a deep sigh, well, the first step to a social victory had already hit a roadblock.
"You should have considered this early on. I'm Lucifer Morningstar, an angel. I was born with the ability to read minds. You can't expect humans to carry things with tentacles. I don't have the ability to empathize so to , human emotions are just notes on a blank piece of paper."
"For instance, I can sense that you are experiencing about 78% disappointnt, and then further breakdown that into various minor emotions. I will not practice an organ that I cannot use, let alone mastering theories derived from the studies of that organ."
Bruce made a dismissive gesture, "Okay, it's not like I was counting on you."
"The Batman technique is not effective on ," Lucifer shook his head, "In fact, you were harboring high hopes because you thought I'm good friends with your professor. But, if you're planning to use as your trump card in front of him, arrogance will always be on the side of arrogance."
"Speaking of which," Lucifer glanced back and said, "How are you planning to smooth things over with him? I feel obliged to warn you, from what I know about Michael, he is genuinely angry."
"What did he do the last ti he got angry?"
"In the heat of the mont, he got angry, he can't cope with , yet he's always angry at ." Lucifer shrugged, "During the Fall of the Angels, I invited him to have an honorable showdown, but the invitation was never accepted. He's one of those old-fashioned angels who adhere to the principle of non-violence among siblings."
"You have brought possible threats to Heaven, this was sothing he could never tolerate. You may think that he can't do much to you, but very often angels can be more ruthless than you think."
"What would he do?"
"It depends, if you can't appease him, he will cast you into the depths of the lake, making you sleep for at least ten thousand years. God would stand by his side, and your professor, judging from the way he reacted to your PhD application in our previous casual conversation, he might agree and enjoy ten thousand years of peace."
"He won't do that, because I'm a father."
"Letting the kids accompany you down there is not a joke. It's not so much a prison as another world, where ti flows differently. You would get quite a long period of parent-child bonding ti, and when you get out, everything would be the sa."
"I fear him," Bruce shook his head, "Everything else is fine, but I can't accept that after ten thousand years with Aisha, she would still bite kids' slides. A beginner father should not face such a terrible sense of defeat."
"You don't sound nervous," Lucifer looked at Bruce, "you're even in the mood to joke."
"That's because he really can't do it," Bruce smiled, "I'm completely sure, and you'll know soon."
Indeed, he knew very soon. Lucifer didn't even have ti to finish his fish tail when a newly born angel rushed into Eden and summoned Lucifer to Michael's office.
Michael's expression was rather mixed, but unlike before, he was no longer that angry. Just as Lucifer was about to ask if magical Batman had fed him so fantastic anger-relieving potion, Michael threw a file at him.
It was a system log that had been accumulating until now, showing so events that had been occurring unbeknownst to them.
