“Of course you’re not!” Ye Xingbei jabbed her finger at his chest. “You, henpecked? I think you’re fearless of heaven and earth. I’ve never seen you afraid of anyone!”
“That just ans you don’t know well enough,” Gu Junzhu lowered his head and captured her lips, speaking indistinctly as he did, “I used to only be afraid of my dad. Now I’m also afraid of you… afraid of you getting mad, afraid of you getting sick, afraid of you being unhappy, afraid of seeing you sigh, afraid of you running into problems you can’t solve…”
Even with his murmured words, his voice was still so alluring it made her bones go soft.
Ye Xingbei’s heart lted into a warm puddle, her body turning to water as she clung to his embrace, holding onto him tightly, unwilling to let go for even a second.

“Good girl,” Gu Junzhu chuckled softly and gave her a firm kiss.
She laughed lightly, tilting her face up to look at him, “Did your dad ever hit you?”
Gu Junzhu shook his head with a smile. “Never.”
Ye Xingbei grew curious. “Is it because you were well-behaved and never deserved a beating, or because your dad was biased in your favor?”
“Probably a mix of both,” Gu Junzhu replied. “You know how it is—youngest children in the family often get spoiled. My parents were strict with my older siblings, but when it ca to , they were especially patient.”
“I can see that,” Ye Xingbei nodded. “Your dad is the most doting father I’ve ever seen. Every ti he looks at you, it’s with pride and affection—the kind of gaze only the most loving of fathers could have.”
“That’s because I was an easy kid,” Gu Junzhu said, holding her waist. “I was always that ‘perfect kid from another family’—top of my classes, collecting trophies and certificates, doing all sorts of things to bring honor to my parents. I was basically flawless. How could they not adore ?”
Ye Xingbei giggled, “There you go bragging again!”
“What?” Gu Junzhu raised an eyebrow. “You don’t believe ?”
“I believe you, I believe you,” Ye Xingbei laughed and nodded, “but, if it were anyone else, they’d probably show a little humility. You, on the other hand, always manage to brag so matter-of-factly.”
Gu Junzhu said, “I’m just stating the facts. Why wouldn’t I be matter-of-fact about it?”
“I was just imagining… if one day you really made your dad mad, and he punished you by making you kneel in the courtyard, would you do it?” Ye Xingbei let her imagination run wild.
Gu Junzhu tapped her on the head. “What nonsense are you thinking about now?”
“It just ca to mind randomly—I’m just teasing you!” Ye Xingbei wrapped her arms around his neck, laughing as she looked at him. “So, tell , would you kneel or not?”
“Can’t you wish well for once?” Gu Junzhu bumped his forehead against hers, shaking his head helplessly before answering, “Of course I’d kneel! How could I not? If it ever got to the point where my dad was so angry he had to punish , it must an I’ve done sothing absolutely terrible. However long he wants to kneel, I’ll kneel, as long as it makes him stop being angry.”
“Gu Junzhu…” Ye Xingbei gazed at him, her eyes soft. “You’re so good…”
“What’s so good about that?” Gu Junzhu shook his head with a laugh, tapping her lightly on the head. “Silly girl, what’s gotten into you this ti? Why can’t you just wish better things for ?”
“How am I not wishing you well? I’m the person who wants the best for you more than anyone else in the world!” Ye Xingbei said with a hint of indignation. “What I an is—you’re so wonderful to your family: filial, responsible; you’re a great son, a great uncle. It makes feel so safe and secure.”
