The word filled the office.

"I do not want to hear you speak one word more than is required."

Magnus’s mouth closed.

The silence that followed lasted long enough for the lawyer to step forward and place a leather folio on Magnus’s desk. He opened it, spread the docunts, and produced a pen.

"These are the terms of dissolution for the marriage between Vespera Ashborn and Magnus Ashborn," the lawyer said. "A division of all jointly held assets, properties, and organizational interests. Both parties are present. The Awakened Association is represented as institutional witness."

The judge stepped forward and addressed Magnus.

"Mr. Ashborn, do you accept the present counsel for these proceedings?"

Magnus studied the lawyer. He’d known the man for over a decade. He’d handled the rger agreents, the guild contracts, the property acquisitions. Magnus searched his face for a tell, a flinch, a refusal to et his eyes. The lawyer t his gaze and held it.

He wouldn’t dare. Crossing Magnus Ashborn was a career-ending decision, and the man was smart enough to know it. And even if the worst was true and he was compromised, so what? He was here only for legality. Magnus could read the lines and understand what the clauses ant without soone holding his hand.

"Accepted," Magnus said. "But Vespera, you should know I’ll not agree to this unless you give sothing truly tantalizing. I’m ready for everything in the court of law."

She didn’t reply. It appeared that she was truly done conversing with him.

"You may review the terms at your discretion," the judge said, and withdrew.

Magnus pulled the folio toward him.

He read.

The first page was standard dissolution language. The second was the asset division. His eyes moved through the lines and his expression shifted as he turned each page. New Dawn - all operational control, full ownership, guild charter, and associated brand rights - transferred to Magnus Ashborn. The subsidiaries, the contracted firms, the accounts, the properties.

He turned another page. The Ashborn family holdings, even the mansion she was born into.

Magnus stopped reading and glanced up at Vespera.

She stood with her arms at her sides and her face empty, staring at a point sowhere past his left shoulder as if the wall behind him were more interesting than he was.

He went back to the docunts. He turned the remaining pages. Vespera Ashborn retained personal accounts, personal assets, and nothing else. She was relinquishing the guild, the subsidiaries, the holdings, the ho her family had built over generations. Everything the Ashborn na had accumulated was being placed into his hands while she walked away with what personal wealth she built for herself.

He flipped back to the asset division and read it again, slower this ti, searching for a buried clause, a conditional trigger, a reversion chanism.

He found one demand.

A single condition from Vespera’s side amid pages of generosity. Upon dissolution of the marriage, Magnus would revert to his birth na. Morvane. The three children - Selena, Cassian, and Calix - would be formally transferred to his sole guardianship and bear the Morvane na as well. The Ashborn na, its heraldry, and all associated rights of lineage would remain with Vespera exclusively.

That was it. That was her price.

Billions in assets, an entire guild, a mansion she was born in, the accumulated wealth of two aristocratic dynasties... and the one thing Vespera Ashborn fought for was making sure he couldn’t call himself the sa na as her.

Magnus almost smiled.

He turned to the lawyer. "These terms are accurate?"

"They are."

"You’ve reviewed them in full?"

"I have. The division is heavily weighted in your favor, Mr. Ashborn. The terms are legally sound and enforceable as written."

He studied Vespera again.

"Why would you give up so much?" he asked.

She was staring at the floor. The shadows pooling at her feet were very still. Every line of her body said the sa thing: sign it so I can leave.

She was giving him everything because she wanted nothing that connected her to him. Not even her na.

Magnus picked up the pen and signed.

The pen moved through the signature lines in practiced strokes. He initialed where required, dated where indicated, and set the pen down when he was finished.

"Witnessed," the judge said, and applied his own signature.

"Recorded," Grace said from her position. She hadn’t moved.

The judge spoke with formal clarity. "By the authority vested in , I hereby declare the marriage between Vespera Ashborn and Magnus Morvane dissolved. The terms of settlent are binding and effective imdiately."

Hearing those words, Vespera’s head tilted.

The change was instantaneous. The woman who had been standing there with the rigid stillness of soone barely holding herself together was gone. What replaced her turned to face Magnus, and what he saw on her face stopped his breath.

She was smiling.

Wide. Unhinged. A grin that split her expression in a way he had never seen in more than twenty years of marriage, and the eyes above it held nothing warm. The shadows at her feet surged, rushing forward across the floor like sothing unchained, swallowing the light from the corners of the office in a single heartbeat. They climbed her legs, her waist, her shoulders, and Vespera Ashborn disappeared into the darkness as if she had never been standing there at all.

Elizabeth was gone with her. The judge clutched his folio to his chest and hurried out the door.

The office was bright again. The shadows receded. The air ward.

Magnus sat behind his desk with the pen where he’d set it down and the ink of his signature drying on docunts.

Grace remained. Her three bodyguards remained.

Magnus exhaled. His hands were still unsteady. The image of that smile lingered, wrong and sharp, and the speed of her disappearance had left a cold residue in the air that he could still feel on his skin.

He shook it off.

"Damn," he muttered to himself. "That woman was truly happy to get rid of ."

The words hung in the silence of his office. Grace said nothing. Her bodyguards said nothing.

Magnus leaned back in his chair and the tension that had been coiling in his shoulders since the broadcast began to unspool. He looked at the desk where the folio had been. He looked at the pen. He looked at the space where his wife had been standing and saw only empty floor and fading shadows.

She had given him everything. All of it, signed over in seconds, because Vespera Ashborn could not stand to breathe the sa air as him for one second longer than necessary.

A laugh escaped him. He ran a hand through his hair and shook his head.

"Vespera Ashborn," he said. "The Shadow Monarch. The woman whose na makes S-tier fighters wake up at night in cold sweat, having nightmares about facing her." He gestured at the empty office, at the door she’d vanished through, at the absence she’d left behind. "Gave away her family’s entire legacy because she couldn’t bear to sit across a table from her husband and negotiate like an adult."

He was grinning now.

"The Nightmare of Children," he said, savoring it. "Turns out to be a weak-willed, fragile child herself who signed away an empire because her heart was weak."

He picked up the pen. Turned it between his fingers. Set it down again.

"Won..." he chuckled. "How utterly pathetic."

Grace heard every word. Her expression did not change.

Then ’the’ feed went live.
