Herbert smiled softly and said:
"Prison Warden and prisoner? Human and Demon? Paladin and Vampire? These were our past identities and relationships."
Thinking about it that way, their relationship was indeed complex and unique solely based on identity.
As a human, Herbert should have been filled with wariness and disgust toward a Demon like Eliza.
And as a Paladin, Herbert naturally harbored hostility and vigilance toward Vampires.
As Prison Warden, Herbert was also tasked with the duty of educating and guarding prisoners.
Eliza, as a prisoner, a Vampire, a Demon, bore deep-seated hostility towards soone like Herbert.
Extrely dangerous, hard to approach, impossible to communicate with — that was Eliza’s image in the eyes of other Prison Wardens.
If it were anyone other than Herbert, it might have unfolded that way, ultimately leading to a mutual loathing finale.
But this ti, it was Herbert.
He never treated Eliza as a terrifying existence to be revered.
