The ONI personnel waiting outside the landing platform did not waste ti.

Three black-armored agents stood near the edge of the refugee processing lane while several UNSC marines held the periter around them. The marines looked normal compared to the ONI agents, who carried themselves with a different kind of control. They were quieter. Straighter. Cleaner too, despite the fact that the spaceport was full of dust, cargo traffic, and exhausted people moving through every direction.

Their attention locked onto the group the mont Marcus led them closer.

One of the ONI agents stepped forward.

"Lieutenant Hale."

Marcus gave a small nod.

"Transfer complete."

The agent's eyes moved across the group one by one.

Naruto.

Tony.

Tanya.

Saeko.

Diana.

Mindy.

Then finally Gaius.

Even surrounded by crates, cargo rails, moving workers, and military vehicles, Gaius was impossible to ignore. He was simply too large. Too still. Too heavy in presence. The gold of his armor stood out against everything else in the port like sothing that did not belong in the sa world as the rest of them.

The ONI agent spoke again.

"Transport arrangents for your residential sector are ready."

Tony lifted an eyebrow.

"That was fast."

"We prepared in advance," the agent answered.

Tony gave a quiet mutter.

"Of course you did."

No one argued with that. ONI clearly did not operate without planning ahead. By the ti they landed, the organization had already decided how the situation would be handled.

Honestly, that was probably normal for an organization like ONI. From what they had seen so far, it operated with authority that seed to go beyond even its own governnt.

The group was escorted away from the refugee lanes soon after.

As they walked deeper into the massive spaceport, the scale of Cascade beca clearer.

Magnetic cargo rails moved overhead, carrying shipping containers through the air in organized patterns. Holographic signs shifted constantly above the walkways, updating ship arrivals, civilian traffic routes, and restricted paths. Automated cargo drones floated past workers and soldiers alike while armored patrols moved between checkpoints.

Everything felt industrial.

Alive.

Busy in a way that never stopped.

Naruto kept looking around as they walked.

"So many people…"

Even after arriving from orbit, it still felt strange to him. Everything here was so different from what he was used to, tall buildings, flying drones, holograms, and a world that looked far more advanced than his own.

He ca from a low-tech world. He had spent his life in a village, even if that village was a ninja village. It was still a village at heart.

Tony's eyes moved across everything with a different kind of focus.

He was not just looking at the size.

He was looking at the systems.

The civilian traffic was tied into military routing.

Ergency response systems were built into the city itself.

Power grids were clearly prioritized to defense sectors first.

He let out a low breath.

"You people militarized half the planet."

Marcus did not look offended.

"That happened after the war started."

Tony glanced toward a line of anti-air batteries mounted across one of the far buildings.

"And the civilians just adapted to this?"

Marcus looked ahead while walking.

"They didn't have a choice."

That answer shut the conversation down for a mont.

Because it said everything.

A world under pressure did not get to choose comfort. It chose survival. That was all.

As they walked farther, the full skyline of Cascade beca visible through the massive glass walls of the terminal and through open stretches of the city beyond.

Tall towers rose near the coast.

Bridges crossed layers of highways.

UNSC aircraft moved between buildings constantly.

Farther in the distance, huge industrial complexes pushed dark smoke up into the clouds.

And above all of it, defense platforms were visible high in orbit.

Naruto stared upward.

"…You can actually see the guns from down here."

Marcus said nothing for a mont.

That was the point.

The colony wanted people to see its defenses. It wanted civilians to rember they were protected. It wanted any enemy watching from far away to know the world would fight back.

Gaius remained silent as he looked over the city.

Outwardly, he gave nothing away.

Inside, he was already taking everything in.

The discipline.

The layered defenses.

The way civilian and military systems worked together.

Humanity here was smaller than the Imperium and weaker in scale, which made it more vulnerable. But they had still managed to hold on.

For decades, they had fought an enemy far stronger than they were, one capable of wiping out entire worlds.

That alone was enough to earn his respect.

Eventually, the group was led toward a transport vehicle waiting near the edge of the terminal.

It looked more like an armored military bus than a normal civilian ride.

Naruto stared at it and imdiately pointed.

"That thing looks military too."

"It is military," Marcus answered.

Mindy folded her arms.

"So literally everything here is military."

Marcus gave the smallest shrug.

"Pretty much."

Nobody laughed, but nobody seed surprised either.

The ride through Cascade only made that feeling stronger.

The roads were crowded, but organized.

Police drones floated between traffic lanes.

Military convoys crossed intersections with full priority clearance.

Public ergency shelters were built directly into the civilian districts.

Even the advertisents on the holographic billboards carried warti ssages.

ENLIST.

SUPPORT THE FLEET.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY.

HUMANITY STANDS TOGETHER.

Naruto leaned closer to the window while they moved through the city.

"They really think the Covenant could co here too."

Nobody answered.

Because they already understood the reality of the situation.

From what they had learned about Slipspace travel, and if the Covenant's technology was truly more advanced than humanity's, then they could arrive with very little warning.

Tony suddenly noticed sothing else through the window.

A massive blue hologram floated above one of the nearby buildings, slowly rotating high above the street.

INSURRECTION DIVIDES. THE COVENANT DESTROYS.

REPORT SEDITION. PROTECT HUMANITY.

The words glowed brightly against the dark skyline while UNSC symbols shifted beneath them.

Tony looked at it for a mont before glancing toward Marcus.

"You guys had civil wars too?"

Marcus gave a small nod.

"Insurrectionists. Before the Covenant war…"

He stopped there.

As if he had been about to say sothing else, but decided against it. His expression hardened slightly before he looked away toward the window again.

Tony humd quietly.

That explained a lot.

Humanity here had already been fighting itself before the Covenant beca the larger threat. No wonder ONI existed. No wonder security was so strict. This world had been living under pressure for a long ti.

After so ti, the vehicle entered a quieter district near the edge of the city.

The buildings here looked cleaner.

Less crowded.

More controlled.

The transport stopped in front of a large residential complex surrounded by subtle but obvious security systems.

Caras.

Hidden turrets.

Motion sensors.

Guard posts.

Tony looked at it and let out a long sigh.

"Yep. Definitely containnt housing."

The ONI escort did not deny it.

"This sector has been prepared for your stay."

Naruto stepped out of the vehicle and looked up at the building.

He paused for a mont.

Then shrugged.

"Honestly? Still better than staying inside that station."

Mindy looked at him, then at the building, then back at him.

"…Yeah. I'll give you that."

Saeko's expression stayed calm, but even she seed to agree with the thought. The spaceport had been crowded. The transport had been crowded. The station had been crowded before that. This place, even with all its caras and guards, at least felt like it had room to breathe.

The group moved closer to the building while the ONI agents remained watchful.

The residential block itself was tall and modern, but not fancy.

It was built to be practical.

Wide enough to hold multiple families or groups.

Strong enough to keep people secure.

Simple enough that it would not stand out too much if viewed from the outside.

The windows were large, but the building still had the feeling of being watched.

Tony noticed that imdiately.

So did Tanya.

They did not need anyone to point it out.

This was a secure residence.

Not a prison.

But also not freedom.

A controlled space.

A place ONI could watch, evaluate, and manage.

Naruto seed less bothered by that than so of the others.

Honestly, he was already used to being watched wherever he went.

He looked around the quieter district again and then glanced back toward the city and the busy port in the distance.

At least here, the air felt less crowded.

At least here, there was more space to think.

At least here, no one was sleeping shoulder to shoulder in a packed transport or waiting in endless lines at a refugee station.

And for all the security around them, the place still felt better than the station.

Saeko lightly brushed one hand along the sleeve of her outfit and glanced toward the entrance.

"This is not a bad place."

Mindy nodded.

"Yeah. It could be worse."

Tony looked over the security systems once more.

"It could always be worse."

Tanya, as usual, was the most practical.

"Though we are being monitored."

That was neither surprise nor complaint. Just a fact.

Gaius had not spoken much during the ride, and he still said nothing now.

He simply looked over the building, the city beyond it, and the guards posted nearby.

Cascade was heavily defended.

It was still under threat.

Still part of a war that stretched across a whole human civilization.

But it was standing.

And that mattered.

He could work with that.

The group began moving inside with the ONI escort, stepping toward the place that would serve as their temporary residence.
