"What are you staring at?" Jiang Nian felt a bit guilty.
Wait, why should I feel guilty?
I’m a good guy with a clear conscience.
Just normal mutual assistance among classmates, nothing more than an exchange of coupons and howork with Chen Yunyun...
The more I say, the more convoluted it gets.
Zhang Ningzhi didn’t answer imdiately. Instead, she paused for a few seconds, her gaze slightly downcast, and after a mont, she quietly asked, "Did you copy soone else’s howork?"
"Huh?" Jiang Nian was dumbfounded.
Is copying howork the only answer? Sweetie, we’re just friends.
"I didn’t an that, it’s just... you promised to copy my howork." Zhang Ningzhi seed to sense the oddity in her tone and quickly murmured an explanation.
"But then you suddenly copied soone else’s, making it seem like my work had a high error rate or sothing."
"Oh, you’ve misunderstood." Jiang Nian pointed at a pile of books to explain, "I’m not copying theirs. They’re helping with the answers, just mutual help."
"They?" Zhang Ningzhi noticed a gap in the logic.
"Haha." Jiang Nian broke into a sweat, stood up and said, "Ma Guojun is here. I’m going to ask him about Li Hua’s whereabouts, see where he’s buried."
Just as he stood up, his shirt’s hem was tugged.
"So, you do dislike my howork and don’t want to copy it." The girl’s voice was a bit sad, as if her efforts were in vain, "I spent two days on it."
Jiang Nian had no choice but to sit down and explain everything clearly. After realizing that he wasn’t dismissing her howork, the girl’s mood improved a bit.
"Oh, I thought..." Zhang Ningzhi said, a little embarrassed.
Jiang Nian thought it might be a good ti to break down so misunderstandings to prevent them from happening again in the future. Zhang Ningzhi seed to really value others’ approval and he didn’t want to affect her.
"I enjoy copying your howork, but I also copied others’ before. However, yours is the most accurate, and your handwriting is quite nice too. But I do occasionally copy others’."
"Because you’re my deskmate and if I copy from you all the ti, the teacher might notice. So, I copy yours sotis and others’ occasionally to keep the teacher from finding out."
"Oh, I see." Zhang Ningzhi seed to understand.
Jiang Nian breathed a sigh of relief and left his seat to find Ma Guojun. As soon as the chubby guy entered, he seed to be searching for sothing. His eyes rested on Jiang Nian for a mont before he asked.
"Brother Nian, has Li Hua arrived?"
"No, but there’s an exam tonight, so he’s definitely..." Jiang Nian muttered a few words, his gaze lowering, "Did you pick up this stick on the road too? It’s on par with the one I had last ti. Let play with it."
"Sure." The chubby guy was quite generous, handing the stick to Jiang Nian, but to show his cautious side, he advised, "Don’t let Li Hua see it."
"No worries, you can trust ." Jiang Nian thought to himself, my buddy’s favor is even sweeter than a girl’s—he lets play but not Li Hua, aweso.
As more people filled the classroom, the sky outside grew darker. So people went out to throw trash with buckets, others went to fill up water bottles.
There was a water dispenser at the back of the classroom, serving filtered water. Whether it was clean depended on the elders, but for the students, it tasted a bit sweet and that was enough. Filling a bottle cost about a di on a card swipe.
At the end of each hallway, there was a water boiler. To get water, students had to swipe another card. Filling a thermos cost about thirty cents, which was quite pricey.
Lin Dong, Chen Yunyun, and Wang Yuhe’s group were right next to the water dispenser.
Chen Yunyun, feeling bored, looked around and saw Jiang Nian playing with a small stick, then loudly said without thinking.
"Hey, Jiang Nian, let play with your stick."
In an instant, amidst the classroom’s hustle and bustle, nurous glances converged on Jiang Nian. Most were just curious observers who looked away after a mont.
Lin Dong looked up, a bit puzzled, wondering why his team mber had switched sides?
Since when did Chen Yunyun beco so familiar with Jiang Nian? Could it be they added each other online and chatted as friends? Oh no, if Chen Yunyun behaves like this, Tom Cheng is going to be shattered.
Wang Yuhe kept her head down, not daring to even glance at her extroverted bestie. The ambiguity in Chen Yunyun’s words was too obvious, making her wish she could pretend not to know her.
In the first group, Luo Zhongping looked up, casting a calm glance in Chen Yunyun’s direction, then briefly at Jiang Nian with the stick, and continued writing his howork.
Did they beco familiar in just one afternoon?
Zhang Ningzhi turned her head, glanced at Jiang Nian and the twig in his hand, then silently turned back.
So, he got close to another girl.
Tom... I an, Sun Zhicheng had just entered the classroom. Puzzled, he heard Chen Yunyun’s words, caught the keyword Jiang Nian, and felt as if the sky was falling.
What’s wrong with you guys, why is Jiang Nian everywhere!
Jiang Nian also felt there was sothing wrong with Chen Yunyun, like why would a girl speak so crudely? What does "let play with your stick" even an, my sticks are anything but small.
After thinking it over, Jiang Nian decided to follow suit and shouted loudly.
"Hey Ma, Chen Yunyun wants to play with your stick!"
"What the...?" Ma Guojun almost jumped up in embarrassnt, turning a slight shade of red, and said to the two, "What’s wrong with you guys!"
"Hahaha." This ti, it was Jiang Nian’s turn to laugh.
Chen Yunyun realized the ambiguity in her words. She was outgoing but not weird; a girl’s face would always turn red, and she buried herself silently at her seat.
As evening reading ti approached, the classroom was brightly lit and bustling. Most of the class had arrived, but Li Hua was still absent.
Only when the class bell rang did Li Hua sneak in through the front door. His eyes darted around, and he stepped into the classroom with his left foot first, clearly up to sothing.
Before he could get to his seat, Ma Guojun and his crew dragged him out, bringing along the stick.
"Class monitor, we’re just going to the bathroom!"
