Luckily, Lily’s hands had already placed the tea on the table, or her trembling might have caused the tea to spill and burn her.
"Mrs. Wallace, are you referring to Miss Winona Wallace, the daughter born to Mr. Bruce Wallace and his late wife?"
Lily Redington’s smile gradually faded, her once casually smiling face started to turn stern, and her beautiful almond-shaped eyes lost their dark intensity.
Indeed, she had a good nature, but she wasn’t blindly indulgent.
But now, as Mrs. Lucas, the eldest daughter of the Reddington family, she adopted a deanor that inadvertently exuded an imposing air of dignity.
"Yes, yes... While Winona is my husband’s daughter with his late wife, I’ve always treated her as my own, like my own daughter." Iris Yates noticed Lily Redington’s displeasure and nervously intertwined her hands, eager to explain.
"I understand this request may put Duke in a difficult position, but for him, it should be a simple task. To be honest, Winona is facing so troubles, with her grandmother intending to marry her off to an old man in his fifties. She’s still so young, in her pri, and her father and I simply can’t stand by and watch. In our family, whatever the old lady says is law; no one dares to defy her. But Duke is different; he’s a family ally with such an eminent status.
If Duke could treat Winona as a goddaughter, then she would have Duke and Duchess Reddington’s support as her godparents. At that ti, even if the old lady wants her to marry, the Carter family wouldn’t dare take her. Of course, if Duke is willing to help, he could also publicly announce he would arrange a marriage for Winona.
That would be perfect, the best outco possible. Then no one could force Winona to marry an old man like William Carter."
Iris Yates spoke clearly and logically, as if prepared long in advance.
Yet, as Lily listened, she only felt sarcasm.
Such fanciful thoughts, taking things for granted — this Mrs. Wallace is truly remarkable.
She’s curious, wondering whether this ridiculous idea was Iris Yates’ own attempt to curry favor with Bruce Wallace or if it was originally the intention of Mr. Wallace.
If it’s the forr, then Iris Yates is simply foolish.
If it’s the latter—ha, then it’s amusing—that family might not last long even without this incident.
"Hmm, I understand." Lily’s tightly pursed lips finally curled back into a smile.
Though this ti, the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
Looking at Iris Yates sitting uneasily across from her, Lily’s red lips parted gently: "This matter is of great significance. I’ll need to consult my father. But I’m curious, Mrs. Wallace, when you made this request, did you consider Leslie at all? Leslie is going to marry my brother; her status will be that of a future daughter-in-law to the Reddington family, my sister-in-law.
And yet now, Mrs. Wallace wants my father to recognize Winona as his goddaughter. No matter how you look at it, Leslie is ultimately your daughter—and in so sense, considered Mr. Wallace’s daughter. Two daughters; one marrying into the Reddington family as a daughter-in-law, the other as a goddaughter. Aren’t you afraid this will make Leslie uncomfortable?"
"This, well... I don’t see how it’s uncomfortable, we’re all family, right?" Iris Yates rubbed her hands sheepishly, a sowhat unnatural smile on her face.
"Not uncomfortable? Then perhaps I’ve overthought." Lily smiled without elaborating.
"Since that’s the case, Mrs. Wallace, you just wait for my reply. It’s getting late; I should get going. We’ll take care of the remaining wedding arrangents. The Wallace family just needs to ensure all the guests are present."
Words are never wasted when they fall on deaf ears.
Lily Redington rose to her feet, did not concern herself with Iris Yates’ embarrassnt, and gracefully exited the coffee shop.
