A week after Emery sealed himself away, Dawnstar’s slow rot turned to open turmoil.

The vultures stopped pretending to circle.

House Valmont and House Korrath — two Grade Two factions, long counted among the top 5 powers on the planet, and once the proudest allies of Red Dawn itself — moved at last.

Where for years they had merely bought ruined contracts and pressed into contested districts, now they simply took. Red Dawn’s trade houses were seized in the night. Its border lands changed hands at swordpoint. Within days, the faction that had ruled this world for three centuries watched nearly a third of what remained to it stripped away by the very houses that had once knelt at its court.

Two weeks of it passed, and still no answer came from the Earth faction.

So Seraphine Dawn went at last to her final resort.

She rode north — to the cold marches, to the keep of the third branch of the family.

The North Dawn.

And its master: Lord Roland Dawn, Marquess of the North.

He was uncle to both Gerardy and Seraphine, and the blood of Dawn kings ran in his veins — but it ran sideways. An illegitimate son, born outside the line, he had never held a drop of legitimacy, and to the endless confusion of the court, had never once seemed to want it. While his trueborn kin schemed over a throne, Roland had left Dawnstar entirely.

For more than five hundred years he had served in the Magus Alliance military, rising to bee a decorated veteran general whose name was spoken with respect across half the sector. A domineering peak Two Cosmos cultivator, hard as old iron — and behind him, five Grand Magus of his own, every one a decorated officer, loyal to his line.

When Red Dawn began its long decline, the Marquess did the only thing his honor allowed. He closed his gates, withdrew to his northern land, and kept clear of the family’s war.

He had sworn as much, long ago, to the old King.

"Gerardy is dead," Seraphine told him, the moment she was admitted to his spare stone hall. "I am the rightful ruler of Red Dawn now. There need be no more blood spilled among us. Support me, Uncle, and the family is whole again."

Roland did not even rise.

"No."

It was not the first time she had asked. He doubted it would be the last.

"Gerardy left a dozen sons and daughters," he said evenly. "Until this family settles behind a single name of its own accord — I will not lift my hand for any side of it. I swore that to your grandfather, and I’ll not break it." His gaze did not waver.

Seraphine’s posure cracked, and something raw came through it.

"Then forget the throne." She stepped closer. "I don’t ask you to crown me. I ask you to help me. These wolves — Valmont and Korrath — are tearing our lands apart" Her voice fell to a plea. "At the very least, Uncle, you must help me hold them off. Or there will be no family left to settle anything."

For a long moment, the old general said nothing.

Then, with a slow and heavy reluctance, the Marquess of the North inclined his head.

###

A week later, they gathered upon the old castle ruins.

It was a place heavy with history — the broken seat of the first Dawn kings, where for six centuries the faction’s greatest pacts had been sworn. Beneath a grey and restless sky, four great forces assembled across the shattered ground, each holding to its own quarter beneath its own banners.

To the north, the grey-and-iron standards of the Marquess, and five Grand Magus arrayed beneath them — a small retinue, but every one a hardened officer. To the east, Seraphine and the ten Grand Magus of her clan. And facing them both, the two great houses: a dozen Grand Magus behind the rich silks of House Valmont, and a dozen more behind the blood-dark colors of House Korrath.

Hundreds of Magus. Better than forty Grand Magus between the four of them.

By the terms agreed, none of that strength would set foot on the central ground. Each force was to send a single representative into the heart of the ruin, there to speak for all — so that boundaries might be drawn without a battle breaking out over a misheard word.

So they came to the center, one apiece.

Roland walked out broad and unhurried, with a young grand magus holding his banner. Seraphine came with the elderly grand magus. And from the houses came their masters — Cassius Valmont, all silk and patience, and hard-eyed Maela Korrath — each shadowed by a single silent guardian in cloaked robes.

It was meant to be a summit. A mutual understanding — four powers drawing the lines by which they might share a wounded planet without devouring one another whole. A historic day, by any measure.

It did not last.

It was the two great houses who broke it, and they did so out of pure greed.

Cassius Valmont laid out terms that would strip Red Dawn of more than half its remaining lands and resources between the two houses — and then, with the faint smile of a man springing a pleasant surprise, asked the question the whole gathering had been circling.

"And when the dust settles," he said lightly, "who among you is to lead what remains? We would so hate to make our agreements with the wrong Dawn." His gaze drifted, deliberate. "What, for instance, of Gerardy’s line?"

Seraphine answered.

"There is no need to trouble yourselves with my brother’s get." Her voice rang clear across the ruin. "My uncle stands here in my support. Agree to the terms, and from this day you need consider only one Dawn." She lifted her chin. "Me. The rightful heir."

Roland went very still.

This was not what she had brought him here for. She had begged his strength to hold off the wolves — and now she stood before them all and wore his presence like a crown, claiming a voice she did not have, speaking for three clans that had never named her.

He said nothing. But the troubled weight behind his silence did not go unmarked.

Maela Korrath’s hard mouth curved.

"Always so very ambitious, Princess." She turned, pointedly, from Seraphine — and toward the old man across the ring. "But it is not your word I came to hear. Marquess. What do you say to all this?"

Seraphine’s head snapped toward her uncle.

"Uncle." Quiet now, and urgent. "This is the only way any of us survives. Please."

The Marquess of the North looked at the greed in the faces around him, and at the niece who had lied her way to his support, and he did the only honest thing left to him.

He sighed — a long, weary breath — turned, and made to leave.

"Uncle!"

Seraphine was on her feet, and there was steel bared in her hand.

"Uncle... I wish there had been another way."

And in that instant the truth landed on Roland like a falling blade.

She had never meant to fight the wolves at all.

She had meant to fight him.

The plea, the summit, the long ride north — every step of it a road leading here, to this ruin, where she might rid herself of the one man whose strength and honor she could neither mand nor abide. The pact with Valmont and Korrath had been struck long ago. And the price of their alliance was the Marquess’s head.

Across the ring, the masters of both houses let their hands drift toward their weapons.

Roland Dawn did not reach for his.

He simply straightened — and let three hundred years of patience fall away.

The pressure that rolled off the old general struck the ruin like a breaking tide. Stone cracked beneath his boots, the wind died, and every soul on that field staggered beneath a weight that should not have been possible.

Because it was not the weight of a peak Two Cosmos cultivator.

It was the weight of a Three Cosmos.

A gasp went through the gathering. The general everyone had written off as a stalled old soldier — a hundred years at the same bottleneck — had broken through, and breathed not a word of it to a living soul. A blade kept sheathed until the moment it was needed most.

"Who," the Marquess said, very softly, "do you imagine you are threatening?"

His voice cut the silence like a blade across silk.

"I am Roland Dawn, Marquess of the North. I held the Alliance line for five hundred years before the eldest of you first gripped a sword." Behind the lines, his five Grand Magus blazed to life in answer. "Bare your blades, then — and learn what the North Dawn has kept behind its closed gates."

For one breath, the balance of the ruin tilted wholly to the old lion.

He was a Three Cosmos. The single greatest power on that field, and every man there knew it.

Then the two silent attendants stepped forward.

The servants in plain robes, the ones no one had spared a glance — they shrugged off their disguises like cloaks, and let their own auras unfurl.

The air itself seemed to freeze.

Three Cosmos.

Both of them.

Two such masters, where there should have been none.

Roland’s lone Three Cosmos, revealed in triumph a heartbeat ago, was buried beneath them in an instant.

And Seraphine — Seraphine, who had e expecting a quiet murder and not a war, who was by far the weakest power standing on that broken ground — felt the blood drain from her face.

"Who..." The word came out thin. "Who are they?"

It took her a moment too long to understand. Two hidden masters. Strength those two house should not possess.

"...Moonlight Syndicate," she breathed.

They had been inside Valmont and Korrath all along.

Which meant she had never been the hunter here.

She had only ever been one more piece on a board far larger than her own.

Across the ring, the Marquess took in the two Three Cosmos masters and the trap closing on every side, and let out a slow breath that was almost a laugh.

"I should have believed her," he muttered, to no one at all.

His hand moved without hurry to his sleeve, and pressed once against a small jade token hidden there.

A single silent pulse went out from the old castle ruins, racing across the land.

A hundred miles away, deep within a folded valley where no scout’s eye could reach, a force lay waiting in perfect silence.

At its heart, a woman felt the jade bracelet around her wrist flicker.

That woman was Klea.

Standing beside her were the Earth faction’s strongest.
