Varyan didn't hesitate.
He threw his dagger.
The blade embedded itself in Venn's shoulder. The professor gasped—more surprise than pain.
Then Seris moved.
She unleashed her Chaos fragnt. Her body beca shadow. Her voice beca wrong. Her mismatched eyes burned crimson.
The Chaos stalker lunged at her. She caught it with both hands—caught it—and tore it in half.
The creature scread. Frost exploded across the room. Glass jars shattered. Chaos shards scattered across the floor like fallen stars.
Varyan grabbed another dagger from his belt—he had brought three—and charged Venn.
The professor raised his hand. A wave of frost shot toward Varyan.
He dodged. Barely. The frost hit the wall behind him, freezing it solid.

Varyan drove the dagger into Venn's throat.
The professor's eyes went wide. He made a wet, choking sound. Then he collapsed.
Behind Varyan, Seris dropped the remains of the Chaos stalker. It dissolved into black smoke, then nothing.
Silence.
Varyan stood over Venn's body, breathing hard. His hands were covered in blood.
