Mabel Quinn, after all, was still a daughter. Seeing her mother in pain, she couldn’t help but feel compassion, so she tugged at Kyle Kinston’s sleeve.
Kyle understood and released Evelina’s hand. Evelina, clutching her wrist in pain, stepped back a few steps, moving close to a nearby policeman. "Officer, I want to report him for assault!"
The policeman gave an awkward smile, having already recognized the person in front of him as Kyle Kinston, who had recently co to J City from Falling City. This woman wants to report him? Is that a joke? Wasn’t she the one who made the first move?
"You were the one who raised your hand first to hit soone. If you want to report soone for assault, shouldn’t you first include your own attempt to assault in your statent?" said the policeman.
Evelina’s face turned crimson in an instant.
Kyle said to the policeman, "She instigated a witness to give false testimony, obstructing justice. What charge does that carry?"
"That’s incitent, and for such a case, one could be sentenced to up to a year in prison." The policeman quickly replied.
Evelina was dumbfounded. How... how could this turn into incitent? If she were really sentenced to prison, she would certainly lose her job at the bank. She had just been promoted to deputy director of the credit planning departnt not long ago and was enjoying a status she had never had before. In recent days, her colleagues at the bank had been eager to flatter her, all knowing she had connections and had been promoted to this position at her age because of a big shot.
Losing this job would be too much for Evelina to bear, not only economically but also psychologically.
At this mont, she didn’t dare do anything to Kyle, so she unleashed all her anger on her daughter. "Well, you little brat, you actually brought an outsider to deal with your own family! Have you been sleeping with this man? Otherwise, why would he help you so much? How many tis have you slept with him? Officer, I want to report this man for raping my daughter!"
The policeman nearly spat out blood. This crazy woman actually called Mr. Kinston an outsider and accused him of rape?! If Mr. Kinston were really detained here, the entire J City would be shaken.
"Ma’am, do you even know who he is..."
"She doesn’t need to know anything," Kyle said coldly. "She just needs to know that if she dares to say another word, I will sue her for defamation, and then she can prepare to spend ten years or more in prison."
Evelina shivered, her mouth opening, but the sound seed stuck in her throat, unable to get a syllable out. Sohow, the look in his eyes made her understand what he said was true and not just a bluff.
Mabel stepped forward, looking at her mother, "Mom, please stop this. It’s not good for you. Also, I’m already an adult. Whoever I want to be with is my freedom. You’re my mom, but you speak of so disdainfully in front of others. Why is this? Is it because I don’t follow your wishes? Is it because I’m a daughter and my brother is a son?"
She suddenly felt both exhausted and ridiculous. Since childhood, she understood that her mother’s attitude towards her and her brother was completely different. When her father was around, it was slightly better. After he was gone, her mother made it even more apparent. Yet, she naïvely believed that as long as she was a good daughter, one day her mother might feel differently about her, might co to like her. Even if this liking was less than one-tenth of what it was for her brother, she would be content.
