Chapter 2204: Chapter 1228: The Precarious Fortress
Two cold moons hung high in the sky, the night wind was biting, and the chilly moonlight filtered through the intermittent clouds, revealing a large fortress standing at the foot of the mountain.
This was the Ironstone Fortress, one of the major strongholds in the northern border of the Pars Empire, an extrely important part of its extensive border.
“Reporting, General, they are about to attack!”
On the towering city wall of Ironstone Fortress, a Scout Captain scrambled and crawled to the feet of a robust middle-aged general, his face pale with fear under the moonlight, leaving a trail of blood on the ground.
His knee was struck by an arrow, yet he faithfully continued to fulfill his duty of reporting the enemy’s situation.
“I have seen them, and though I would like you to rest, every bit of combat power is extrely important now.”
The robust middle-aged general nodded slightly, gesturing for a Priest to simply bandage the Scout Captain’s wound.
The general’s na was Brell, a nobleman of Pars who guarded the border for generations, holding the position of Deputy Army Commander and currently acting as the Commander of Ironstone Fortress.
After settling the Scout Captain, Brell took a deep breath and moved towards the viewing platform at the edge of the city wall.
Across the now-dry Protective City River below the wall, countless humanoid figures ford a vast, disorderly military formation, rapidly approaching from the horizon, sending wave after wave of a chilling killing aura that made one’s heart tremble.
Listening to the increasingly clear and dense sound of footsteps, Brell forcibly steadied himself and continued to observe intently.
The rigid moonlight revealed countless drawn blades, it also illuminated the crimson eyes, pale yellow fangs, and the ferocious wolf heads covered with gray-green fur.
“At least fifty thousand Jackaln Grand Army, and judging by their equipnt, this is a Jackaln elite force, at least mixed with one Main Forces Corps.”
Brell wiped the cold sweat dripping from his forehead and looked around himself.
On the fortress city wall stood only two thousand aged and weak Soldiers, all with trembling figures, not even a Longbowman capable of pulling a heavy bow.
Several elderly Magicians full of wrinkles were even carried to the battlents, exerting all their might to inject Mana, but from their shaky appearances, it was evident they might collapse at any mont.
An uncontrollable air of despair was rapidly spreading on the city wall, and although these frail Pars Soldiers remained at their posts, their eyes, unable to hide their fear, revealed everything.
This was destined to be a battle that could not be won.
Even though Ironstone Fortress was strong, it still couldn’t withstand the siege bridges created by the Jackaln Magicians, a force disparity of twenty-five tis!
“I never thought they would choose to attack now, looks like they have discovered the emptiness of the fortress.”
Brell clenched his fist, and beads of sweat poured down his firm face from his forehead.
As a major stronghold at the northern border of the Pars Empire, Ironstone Fortress originally had three Main Forces Corps and three Regular Army Corps stationed, enough to easily cope with this Jackaln Grand Army, even possessing the capability to annihilate them fully.
But now, the main forces had long been redeployed to participate in The Battle of Annihilation against the Coldfla Kingdom, and after the setback at the Unfallen Fortress, were urgently dispatched to the west to defend Ironhand Archipelago.
“According to the letters from frontline generals, under the coordination of Her Highness Princess Cecililia and Commander Barnet, so legions should have retreated, but unfortunately, these two prominent figures were both relieved of command inexplicably before the deploynt, and to this day, their whereabouts are still unknown.”
Brell gritted his teeth, his veins bulging.
If so legions had retreated, the situation would not have reached this irreparable stage.
The cruelty and greed of the Jackaln were well known, a grand army of five Jackaln legions could easily level this Ironstone Fortress, and behind the fortress lay villages filled almost entirely with elderly, won, and children.
Most crucially, once Ironstone Fortress was breached, news of its emptiness would inevitably spread quickly across the Outer Region.
By then, not only the Jackaln but also the Lizards, Half-Orcs, and Wild Boarn who coveted this land would surely invade massively, and this land would soon beco a purgatory of blood and fire!
“General, what if we request reinforcents?!”
Beside Brell, a young Staff Officer stepped forward, eyes wide open: “If there are reinforcents, this fortress would definitely not fall, and even if it does, we can die trying to win ti for reinforcents, or else this land will surely be devastated!”
“Reinforcents? Where would there be reinforcents?”
Brell shook his head helplessly and sighed heavily.
Though stationed at the border, he had a fair understanding of the current situation of Pars due to having family mbers serving in the Imperial City.
After the disappearance of Cecililia and Barnet, His Imperial Majesty issued a series of puzzling orders, preparing to move troops into the Grimm Kingdom to assist the Temple of Light in eliminating the Coldfla Kingdom and its Alliance Army at the Ironhand Archipelago.
However, before the exhausted grand army could fully assemble, a horrifying incident involving countless violent roots occurred.
Though those terrifying roots soon receded entirely, it’s said that His Imperial Majesty then fell into a coma, plunging the Imperial City into chaos.
