The air was filled with muffled sobs and words of comfort.

For the first ti in days, Karen felt warmth again—the kind that ca not from safety, but from love.

But what Karen didn’t know... was that soone else had followed her into the bunker.

Soone she hadn’t expected to see again so soon. Or ever.

"Karen."

Her na was spoken in a low, familiar voice. She turned around sharply, her heart skipping a beat.

Standing just a few steps away was a tall, handso man—his clothes dusty, his expression weary, but his smile genuine.

"Marco..."

Karen gasped, her emotions overwhelming her. She rushed to him and threw her arms around his neck, holding him tightly as if afraid he might vanish if she let go.

"You’re safe... I can’t believe it—you’re really safe!"

Marco chuckled softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"Of course I am. You didn’t think I’d let the world end without finding you first, did you?"

For a brief, fleeting mont, Karen smiled.

It was like the old days again—the warmth of his touch, the steady comfort of his voice.

But then, her smile slowly faded. Reality crept back in like a shadow.

Ross.

The deal she had made. The promise she had given in desperation.

Karen’s chest tightened. She couldn’t et Marco’s eyes anymore.

Guilt swirled inside her like a storm, twisting and clawing at her heart.

She didn’t know how to explain any of it—what she had agreed to, or what it ant.

Karen took a shaky breath, forcing a smile she didn’t feel. "I’m just... so glad you’re here," she whispered.

Marco smiled warmly, unaware of the shadow looming over them both.

"Nothing’s ever going to separate us again," he said confidently.

Karen’s stomach twisted at his words. If only he knew.

Because sowhere above them—far beyond the safety of the bunker—Ross was watching everything unfold through a live feed, a faint smile curling on his lips.

And Karen knew, in her heart, that Marco was about to face the shock of his life.

And there was nothing she could do to stop it.

Another hour passed before the final phase of the evacuation concluded.

The sound of armored boots thundered through the underground corridors as dozens of tall n in full combat suits entered the bunker.

Each one carried advanced weaponry—sleek rifles, reinforced suits, and sidearms polished to perfection.

Their visors reflected the dim red lights of the entry bay, and the rhythmic clank of tal echoed like a heartbeat across the vast chamber.

Then ca the final mont.

With a grinding roar, the colossal gates of the bunker slid shut.

Layer after layer of steel interlocked until even sound seed to vanish.

The faint tremor that followed made it feel as though the earth itself had sealed them off from the dying world above.

For a while, there was only silence.

Then Ross’s voice filled the air—calm, smooth, and utterly in control.

"Attention. Requesting everyone to gather in the main hall."

The announcent reverberated through the halls. Families stirred from their quarters.

The soldiers ford lines.

The newly arrived civilians moved uncertainly, whispering to one another as they followed the illuminated signs toward the grand central hall.

It took five minutes before everyone assembled—hundreds of anxious faces staring up at the raised dais.

The hall itself was imnse, reinforced by titanium beams, the air faintly humming with electricity.

It felt like a cathedral built for survival.

Then, the sound of approaching footsteps drew everyone’s attention.

Ross appeared.

He descended from an upper corridor with Althea at his side, her crimson hair glowing under the white lights like liquid fire.

Her beauty alone was enough to command silence, but beside Ross—tall, composed, and radiating quiet authority—they looked like a pair out of myth, the king and queen of this underground realm.

Ross stopped before the crowd, resting his hands on the steel railing of the platform.

For a mont, he said nothing.

His piercing gaze swept the hall as though asuring every soul before him.

When he finally spoke, his voice carried with it both warmth and unshakable power.

"Today," he began slowly, "marks one of the darkest days in human history."

A heavy pause followed. Even the children stopped whispering.

"I did not know the exact hour it would co... but I have always been ready to plan against everything. For years, I have prepared—quietly, patiently—for the collapse of the world above if it would happen. And while I could not save everyone, I ensured that those closest to —those who matter—would be with in these hard tis."

The crowd exchanged glances. So looked grateful. Others uneasy.

Ross continued.

"As of now, there are five hundred and sixty-nine of us here. Among you are my wives, my children, my in-laws, my friends, and my soldiers. Every one of you was chosen for a reason. Though the surface has fallen into chaos, down here, we begin anew. We survive. We build. And we rise again."

He raised a glass that shimred gold under the lights.

"Welco... to Aegis. Our refuge. Our fortress. Our new ho."

A wave of applause followed. So clapped eagerly.

Others hesitated, unsure what kind of future they had just stepped into.

Still, food was brought out—real food, not rations—and the sll of roasted at and fresh bread filled the air.

For a mont, people almost forgot the screams echoing in the cities above.

Ross’s soldiers distributed sleek black phones to everyone—devices engraved with a strange sigil. "These will function within Aegis even if all communication dies outside," Ross explained. "Consider them a lifeline."

By the ti midnight arrived, the once-bustling hall had quieted.

Families retreated to their assigned quarters. Guards took positions in every hallway.

The hum of generators beca the lullaby of a world reborn underground.

Karen lay awake on her bed, unable to sleep.

Her mind replayed the chaos of the last two days—the screams, the blood, the rescue, Ross’s voice.

Everything felt unreal. Her parents and sisters were safe in their room.

Then—

Buzz.

Her phone vibrated softly on the nightstand.

Karen frowned and reached for it.

There was only one ssage on the glowing screen.

Co outside. My n will help you find .—R
