Now reading: Chapter 211: The bubbling Jealousy from Evolving My Mythic Legion With A Legendary Skill, a Fantasy novel by Jinmoon.

Rob was listening with the focused attention he gave to anything that affected the domain’s physical integrity, occasionally correcting Bob’s account with the quiet precision of soone for whom accuracy was a value independent of whether the audience noticed the correction.

Mob ate without contributing to the conversation, which was Mob’s consistent relationship with group dinners, his broad back settled comfortably and his expression carrying the particular satisfaction of soone whose day had gone the way days should go.

Leon sat in his usual seat with the asured quality he always had fresh from rotation, present and engaged but not the loudest thing in the room, eating steadily and listening to whatever was happening around him with the composed attention that was simply how Leon moved through most situations.

Rin was beside Jane, which had beco their habitual configuration at the table, eating with the ease of soone who had stopped calibrating every movent against the newness of the environnt and was simply present in it.

Jane was quiet in the way she was always quiet at the table, attentive without filling space unnecessarily, her eyes moving occasionally to Neil with the quality of soone who had been watching for his return from sothing and had not yet fully released the attention now that he was back.

Ileana was beside Neil, her arm occasionally brushing his as they ate, the contact easy and unthought, the kind of thing that happened between people who had been close enough long enough that proximity was simply the natural state.

The al moved the way good als moved when nothing was forced, conversation finding its own pace, moving through the table in the easy way of a group that had been together long enough to have established its own rhythms.

At so point Rin looked up from her plate and found Leon looking in her direction, and the half second before both of them redirected their attention was the sa half second it had been at every al for the past several days, the sa careful and unacknowledged thing that was becoming a pattern whether either of them was consciously participating in it or not.

Neil ate his food and said nothing about it.

After dinner he walked the periter once, not because anything needed checking but because the walking helped him think and the periter gave him the full circuit of the domain’s current state in a single pass.

The evolution pulse was steady through the walls, slow and deep, exactly as it should be.

The elven archers on the evening rotation moved through their positions with the easy competence of people who had been doing their work long enough that it no longer required active attention, and they straightened briefly when he passed without breaking their rhythm, which was the right response.

Magnar was near the campfire pit in the configuration he preferred for the evening, low and warm and watching the courtyard with the one-eyed attention of a familiar who was resting but not absent, and he tracked Neil’s periter walk without moving, amber eyes following the circuit.

The barrier at the domain’s edges was carrying the evolution’s energy in the way barriers carried upgrades, slightly brighter than usual at the seams, the structural change working its way through the defensive systems as part of the overall transformation.

Neil completed the circuit and stood near the gate for a mont, looking at the domain in the evening light.

He thought about Randy and the conversation he needed to have in the morning.

He thought about the lost elven kingdom and how fast the tiline was narrowing, about Caleb and Rabid Wolf and the particular patience of soone who had already decided what they were going to do and was simply waiting for the right environnt.

He thought about his mother being held sowhere far away and his father existing as a fact he had not yet figured out what to do with.

He filed all of it in the part of his mind that held things he was working on and went inside.

The room was quiet and warm and Ileana was already in bed with the small light beside her doing the sa thing it always did, and she put her reading away when he ca in with the sa ease she always did, no concession in it, just the natural reorientation of soone whose attention had simply moved.

He lay down beside her and the room settled around them the way rooms settled when the people in them had stopped needing to fill the space.

"Tell sothing." She said.

"About what."

"Anything. From before. Back on Earth."

Neil looked at the ceiling for a mont.

"There was a movie about a man stuck in a ti loop. Keeps waking up on the sa day, everything resets, no one else rembers."

"What does he do."

"At first he tries to use it. Figures out exactly what to say to everyone because he already knows how the day goes. Gets clever about it, manipulates things." He paused. "Then it stops working the way he wants and he just starts trying to be better at things. Learning piano. Actually listening to people instead of just knowing what they are going to say."

Ileana was quiet for a mont, thinking about it properly.

"Did he get out."

"Eventually. When he stopped trying to force it."

She made a small sound that ant she was filing it sowhere in the way she filed things she intended to think about again later.

"There was another one." Neil said. "A man gets captured, ends up in a cave with limited materials and people who want him dead. Builds a suit of armor out of what he has because there is no other option."

"Did it work."

"Well enough to get him out. Then he kept improving it."

She smiled against his shoulder.

"You like that one."

"It had a good logic to it."

She pulled the blanket up and settled closer against him, her arm across his chest in the familiar configuration, and after a while her breathing deepened and the small light went out and the room was quiet and dark and entirely sufficient.

Neil looked at the ceiling for a little while longer and then stopped looking at it and slept.

Down the corridor in the small room near the healing hut that had beco hers, Jane lay on her side and looked at the wall.

She had heard the low murmur of their voices through the corridor for a while before it went quiet, and she had lain still and listened to it without aning to and then lay still in the quiet that followed without knowing what to do with either the sound or the silence.

She thought about dinner.

About his arm visible past Ileana’s shoulder at the table, about the way Ileana touched him without thinking about it, the ease of it, the complete and total ease of it, the kind of ease that ca from ti and shared experience and the particular intimacy of having been through things together.

She had watched that and not looked away fast enough and the feeling that went through her chest was sharp and specific and she swallowed it without showing it because she had agreed to this, had chosen this, had walked through the domain gate knowing exactly what she was walking into and saying yes to it anyway.

Sharing was what she had said she could do.

She was doing it.

It was just that saying it and lying in the dark afterward were different experiences and no amount of having made the decision in advance made the dark afterward feel less like the dark.

She thought about the recording her father had kept on his ship, the one that had been played in front of everyone at the event, her own voice on it saying things she had spent years trying to stop hearing in her head.

She had been trying to protect him.

She had broken sothing in the process.

The fact that her reasons were real did not make what she had done to him less real, and she had understood that long before she ca back here, had understood it while training under the Dragon Empress until her body stopped being able to fail in the ways it used to fail, had understood it in the realms that had nearly killed her, had understood it in every sleepless night when the heart condition her body had developed made her chest feel like sothing was being systematically dismantled inside it.

She was not here to be forgiven imdiately.

She was here because here was where she needed to be, and getting close to him again was sothing she would work toward the sa way she worked toward everything else that mattered, steadily and without requiring it to happen faster than it was going to happen, and if the price of that was lying in the dark and swallowing sharp feelings while the domain settled into its evening quiet around her then that was the price and she would pay it.

She turned over and looked at the other wall.

Getting him back at all was enough.

She closed her eyes and waited for sleep.

Morning ca with Bob’s voice sowhere in the domain exterior at a volu that had clearly not adjusted for the fact that so people were still sleeping, announcing sothing structural about the evolution’s effect on the wall junction with the energy of soone who found the information genuinely exciting and saw no reason to contain that excitent.
