Though we could shelter in hos and use spells to avoid the rain, the poison in ti perated all water sources..."
There was no need to say any more.
Humans can forego touching rain, but cannot survive without water.
Moreover, should this toxin truly enter the water cycle, then even the moisture in the air would hold its taint.
