The battle portion of the third day was about to begin.
Looking at the standings—Fairy Tail Team A with 31 points, and Team B with 39—every mber of the guild could barely contain their excitent.
"I never thought we'd live to see the day we made it back to first place…" Alzack said tearfully, holding his daughter in his arms.
"We even took both first and second… this is wonderful…" Macao bawled, covering his eyes.
Roo looked at his father speechlessly and complained, "The tournant's not even over yet. Isn't it a little early to be crying?"
"Exactly, Fourth Master," Mavis said with an easy smile as she watched the first pair of contestants enter the field. "Save those tears of joy for the very end."
"First Master… um, I'm the Fifth…"
"You're the Fourth, idiot!"
…
The battle phase began.
The first match featured Erza's old acquaintance, Millianna, against Sems of Quatro Cerberus.
Sems was an exceptionally burly man whose magic let him spin his body at high speed and slam into his opponent like a human top. His strength was nothing to scoff at.
But…thanks to Bacchus's earlier antics, the mbers of Quatro Cerberus—already lacking both looks and popularity in the eyes of the crowd—had beco even less well-liked, so there were not many cheers for him this ti.
Fortunately, their master, Goldman, was broad-minded enough not to care much about that sort of thing.
Millianna, on the other hand, instantly drew a flood of support the mont she cast off her black robe and revealed her bold, wild, and undeniably sexy outfit.
And once the fight started, she made full use of her Cat Rope Magic, easily binding Sems while he spun, then whipping him like a top to keep him going.
As a result, Sems rolled his eyes back, his old face flushed bright red, and fainted wearing a deeply questionable grin…
That, uh… "disciplinary" battle sent a certain segnt of the audience into a frenzy, and they loudly cheered for Millianna.
The first match went to rmaid Heel.
The second match was Blue Pegasus's pretty-boy youngster Eve Tearm against Sabertooth's Rufus Lore.
The mont Rufus stepped onto the field, Gray's expression sharpened.
On the first day, he had been too busy covering for Juvia so she could win her event, and never got the chance to teach that smug bastard a lesson.
"mory-Make Magic…" Gray muttered. "Let's see just how far you can take an ancient spell like that…"
Though Eve often played the flirt alongside Blue Pegasus's handso trio, in actual combat he was stronger than Millianna had been.
After all, he had once been considered a candidate to beco a captain in the Magic Council's Rune Knights, but later left because he could not adapt to the Council's way of doing things, eventually joining the famously flamboyant Blue Pegasus.
The battle began, and Eve quickly cast Snow Magic, transforming the entire arena into a snowy field. Using the terrain to his advantage, he imdiately launched a relentless blizzard at Rufus.
"Burn away—fires of hell."
Rufus stood calmly where he was, raising two fingers beside his head as a golden halo shone behind him.
A burst of blazing fire appeared out of nowhere in front of him.
The flas lted the snow and completely blocked Eve's attack.
At the sa ti, Rufus used mory-Make to release a homing Light Magic spell—Starry Night.
Eve could only keep generating snow doubles and darting desperately from side to side, scrambling to avoid the endless stream of Make spells Rufus produced one after another.
Unfortunately, the gap between them in sheer ability was already too wide for Eve to overco through strategy alone.
In the end, Eve's clothes were left in tatters, and he collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.
Gray could not help frowning.
"To materialize the forms stored in his mory… how does a magic like that produce such an outrageous effect?"
Then he lowered his voice and added, "No… there has to be a flaw in that magic."
...
Back in Blue Pegasus's waiting room, Eve bowed deeply to Ichiya and shouted,
"I'm sorry, Ichiya-san! I still lost!"
"It's fine, n~"
Crossing his hands dramatically, Ichiya flashed a confident, magnetic smile.
"Just like this fragrance, we shall turn defeat into victory, because…"
"n!"
With an explosive leap, Ichiya pointed toward the mysterious person in the rabbit costu beside him, twisting his hips and sticking out his rear as he grinned.
"We have a secret weapon!"
Hibiki scratched his head and muttered quietly, "That said… just who exactly is inside that rabbit suit? Even we're not allowed to know."
"No idea," Ren replied. "But the master and Ichiya both seem to think very highly of him."
Staring at the large eyes on the rabbit costu, Ren felt an inexplicable chill.
"As long as he's one of our guild mbers, I guess…"
"And now, we move on to the third battle! On one side, Laxus Dreyar of Fairy Tail Team B! On the other, Alexei of Raven Tail!"
As Chapati's voice rang out, Ankh reached out and slapped palms with Laxus as he rose to leave the room.
"Raven Tail's on the other side," Ankh said. "Watch out for dirty tricks."
"Don't worry."
Wearing his coat over his shoulders, Laxus gave a cold smile.
"I'll let them get a good look at hell."
Laxus and Alexei stepped onto the field.
From the stands, Makarov looked down with a grave expression and spoke first.
"Warren?"
"Yes."
Standing beside him, Warren Rocko activated his Telepathy Magic, linking up the guild mbers positioned throughout the arena.
Up on a high platform, Bisca had already set up her rifle, sighting straight at Ivan's forehead.
At a distance, Lisanna and the Thunder God Tribe watched Raven Tail's contestant area like they were ready to draw weapons and rush in at any mont.
Even the cheering section had all tensed up, muscles tight, keeping little Asuka safely in the center while they remained alert for any sudden disturbance.
"Don't think you can pull any more cheap tricks, Ivan," Makarov growled, hot breath hissing from his nostrils as he glared at Ivan in the crowd.
Watching everyone on full alert, Mavis gave a small, satisfied laugh.
"A guild that will use any ans necessary to protect its comrades…"
She smiled softly.
"That really is the ultimate form of a guild I've always dread of."
...
The gong signaling the start of the match had already sounded.
On the field, Laxus stood with his arms crossed, staring at the heavily cloaked Alexei, a cold light flashing in his sharp eyes.
"How long are you planning to keep up the act?"
Alexei paused.
Then, in the next instant, he burst forward and threw a fierce punch at Laxus.
Bang!
The heavy blow ca crashing in, but Laxus casually raised one hand and stopped it dead.
Looking at the visibly shocked Alexei, Laxus spoke in a chilling voice.
"Your Magic reeks so bad I could sll it a mile away… you rotten old man."
