Adam had kept this place in mind for a while. Specifically ever since he decided to beco a scaver way back in Naper. However the scrapyard was near the outskirts of the city and firmly in the East, even if he didn't fully comprehend the threat of the feral ghouls back then, he was not about to walk into the territory of a 'horseman of the apocalypse'. Furthermore it was not the sort of scrap yard filled with things he could bring back with a backpack alone. It was the dumping site for several big companies. Among the sorts of things you might find included chevrons, RobCo robots, ovens, stoves, and virtually all other things you could imagine. It was also fairly radioactive, even pre-war, another reason why he was not in any hurry to get there.
However he was prepared, he had his Rad-X and Radaway, he even found a small supply in the Vault, clearly lost in the scramble to leave 200 years ago as they were stuffed underneath the legs of a cabinet in the dbay. It ant he could replace the Rad-Away and Rad-X he was about to use without worry and give Deccanus so too. This was the sum total of it however, if he had a single more person who needed anti-radiation ds he would need to head to Naper first to stock up. However Salvatore was a ghoul and radiation healed him so it was practically like entering a spa for him, Pearl was a super mutant which ant she was not affected by radiation in any aningful manner, and then there was Eve, a robot, also immune to radiation. Ironically the bulk of his team had so resistance to the radiation of the scrap yard, so he lucked out.
He had considered bringing Eric along too but he was not ready to handle himself outside the safety of walls and again lacking radiation dicine ant he couldn't afford another tag-along. Regardless he could simply show him everything he gathered when he got back. Besides, most of the work would be done with Eric anyway so he was not missing much. He was teaching him to be a repair tech, not a scaver after all.
Luckily the trip to the scrapyard was trouble free and they arrived at the scrapyard after only about an hour of driving. Everyday that went by he was ever more grateful for the APC, it truly was a ga changer. It's not like he could simply snap his fingers and suddenly appear anywhere he wants, so in the absence of sci-fi-like technology like teleporters, having a car to drive around made life so much easier. Not least of all because to get to the scrap yard it would have been a full day's travel or so just to arrive.
As he pulled up to the mostly broken chainlink fence gate and got out his eyes fell upon the lard dumping sight filled with all manner of things. He sighed as he looked down at his pip-boy as he heard the slow light clicking from his geiger counter. Even out here it was radioactive. Still, even from out here without a great view on the huge piles of junk laying around he could see that this place would definitely have so useful things worth taking back.
"Everyone ready?" He said as he turned to his group, getting nods from everyone. "Alright then, let's head inside." Adam said as he pushed open the chainlink fence gate that was only barely standing.
As he entered he opened his pill case containing Rad-X, so sort of miracle drug that prevented radiation sickness and poisoning. It only lasted for a short period of ti but it would actively absorb the radiation that passed through the body and then the person would easily pass it out through their stool later. Adam didn't have the faintest clue how it worked, just that it did. The Rad-Away worked similarly but if Rad-X was proactive, Rad-Away was reactive. Rad-Away absorbed any radiation currently in the body, condensed it and then the person passed it out just the sa. The difference is it only works in the mont, it does not prevent any further radiation poisoning.
Separately they were great tools but had their flaws, together Rad-X and Rad-Away were dicines that were included in literally every survival kit pre-war, from a prepper's bag to a child's bag.
Regardless after he popped the pills he instructed Deccanus to do the sa who did so surprisingly unreluctantly. The group then headed into the scrapyard with a shopping list Adam ca with.
First, he wanted the parts that Remington requested to fully repair the reactor, it was a very specific list so he was not sure if he would find all of it here, but he had a good feeling he would find at least so of it.
Second, he wanted to find new protectron parts. Both Buddy and the other protectron from Corvega were in disrepair and needed replacent parts. Luckily the Protectron model of robot was both sturdy and simply made. It was incredibly easy to swap parts around without much issue. And he did know for certain that this was the junkyard where most of the broken robots of Chicago ended up before the world ended.
Third, just like for the protectrons, he needed to get replacent parts for his new Mr. Gutsy, luckily it shared most of the sa systems and parts as the Mr. Handy just with a combat overhaul. This ant if he could find a scrapped Mr. Handy, there was a half decent chance he might be able to use it for parts.
Fourth, and finally, was a loose list of various other things that could be helpful. Anything from gears to circuit boards to jukeboxes even. Whatever he strikes upon that might either be worth so caps or might be worth bringing back ho to the Vault with him. He was still a scaver after all, even if he was living in the Vault he still needed caps.
As the group began to split up, starting the initial steps of searching the large partly rusted piles of tal that stacked up high above their heads Adam heard a strange rumble in the ground which caused him to turn around. When he did he saw nothing so, after a few monts, he shook it off and went back to searching. Then he heard it again, and this ti the sound was clearer, louder, closer. It sounded like sothing was digging through the dirt floor they were walking on. It did not take him long to figure out what he was hearing.
A mont later a huge scorpion tail shot out of the dirt and dove right towards him. Adam managed to dodge out of the way at the last second by the skin of his teeth as the, now revealed, radscorpion pulled itself from out of the dirt below.
