Adam finished his work on Rae and his al with Deccanus and then headed back inside to rent a room for the night one more ti. He considered actually staying sowhere else this ti, but truthfully The Layover was perfect and there was no reason to go anywhere else. Besides he refused to share a washroom with others, a small bit of vanity he would not compromise on so his options were limited. He would either go to the Layover, go to The Delta, or go to the third floor. There might be one more hotel sowhere in Midway he could stay in but it was simply not worth looking for. Truly, The Layover offered everything he needed. So, with another paynt of 125, he hit the showers and then headed to bed.
The next day ca and, after a al with Mira for breakfast for 32 caps, he gathered everyone up for the next trip he was planning to make. The last one before he would head back to the Vault and wait for tomorrow, the day when everyone gathered. The Gunner Base.
Adam knew where their basecamp was because he had asked Mr. Cantelli shortly before he was kidnapped. He always had the intention to hire them. They were efficient and well disciplined soldiers. He would have hired the Talon Company too, even despite the fact they were slightly more rowdy, but they were no longer in Chicago. Likely gone far West by now.
He had considered hiring others, such as the Demon Klan who showed up at the fight against Famine. However they were thoroughly disreputable types. The Gunners weren't exactly 'good' folks either. However they could be trusted to do their jobs, he could not say the sa about people who had nails sticking out of their heads, wore human bone necklaces, and kept slaves. The threat of genocidal annihilation in Chicago was a good motivator for everyone, even the unsavory, however this was less on the nose danger. Thus there was no similar way to motivate people.
In fact he had not reached out to Mada Aquamarine, The Knights of the round, or anyone else either. Mr. Cantelli learning was an accident, this was ant to mostly be a way to strike at the cult, kill their leaders and deal a massive blow to the forces of War as well. Involving others just takes the risk off war's n.
Regardless he had his reason to hire the Gunners, besides, it never hurt to be on good terms with the local PMC.
Driving up to, what once was, a bank. He saw that it had been heavily fortified and reworked to make use of the heavily secure building and turn it into a military fortress, which is what it looked like. The roads around the gunner's HQ were cleared of debris, they were then limited in space by barbed wire and sandbags which were manned by n on machine guns. The roof of the forr bank not only had the Vertibird but also a sniper, and there were a few n running laps around the building in so sort of PE training.
Adam slowed the APC to a crawl as he got close to the sandbag wall that limited the space on the road and prevented further advance with the APC. At least not without running the n and the emplacent over. However the Gunners who were on guard did not seem intimidated by Adam's APC. They had seen it before at the battle, but considering they did not even raise their guns at him as he popped out of the top hatch spoke volus about what they thought of Adam.
"You need sothing?" One of the two guards at position asked casually to Adam while he looked up from a sudoku book he was solving.
"Yes, I have a business proposition that I would like to discuss with the Colonel." Adam said with a friendly smile. The Guard stared at Adam without saying anything for a mont and then sighed.
"The Colonel is out at the mont, however he should be back before the day is out. If you don't mind waiting you can co in. But I believe it goes without saying you better not try anything." He said with a hint of threat at the end just to hamr his point down.
"I won't, I promise." Adam smiled.
"Alright, well we ain't moving these sandbags so you can just leave your APC here, just move it to the side of the road so it doesn't obstruct our vision. Head inside the HQ, soone else will take care of you until the Colonel is back."
"Much obliged." Adam said as he hopped back into the APC, backed it up, and then drove to a more out of the way spot before disembarking with his crew and heading past the checkpoint on foot.
They did get so stares as they made their way in, but not hostile ones, just curious glances. They were not at all made to feel unwelco, however it really did feel like this was a serious operation.
Once inside he saw how the bank had been heavily converted. The main foyer had been converted to an almost nice waiting room. Rather posh for the post apocalypse all things considered. The red carpet was cleaned spotless and the chairs looked rather well kept and comfortable. The chairs were mismatched though, clearly having been scavenged from other nearby buildings, but still it actually felt rather nice in here.
They had even installed a working AC unit in the room that was on only insofar as it was regulating temperature, there was no need for it to be on full force at the mont.
As they walked in, a Gunner wearing lieutenant stripes walked up.
"Adam Baxter, yes?" The man asked, clearly already knowing who Adam was.
"Thats ."
"I got the radio call from the front. Please, make yourself comfortable. The Colonel was out on a sortie with so of the new recruits, however the mission should not take more than a few more hours. I can hash out the details of this contract with you now or, if you would rather wait for the Colonel personally, that is acceptable too." The man said with ingrained professionalism.
Adam paused to consider his options but ultimately decided that waiting for the Colonel was the best option. What he wanted to hire him for was not so simple job. It would be big, and expensive. This was the sort of thing that the Colonel would want to take personally.
"I think I'll wait, if that's alright."
"Of course sir." The Lieutenant said with a polite nod. "Let know if there is sothing I can do for you in the anti, a drink perhaps." He then turned on his heels and left, heading back behind the desk to work on paperwork or sothing that couldn't be seen from where Adam was sitting. Guess now all Adam can do is wait.
