The extracorporeal circulation uses an extracorporeal circulation machine, similarly placed outside the patient, connected via tubes to the patient’s blood vessels, recovering venous blood for gas exchange and then returning it to the patient’s body, generally replacing the pulmonary circulation. So hence directly call the extracorporeal circulation machine an artificial heart-lung machine.
Because during heart surgery, the heart might need to completely stop or reduce activity while not stopping, heart function thus completely halts or becos restricted, and other organs without the nourishnt of arterial blood and venous blood accumulation can result in death. Therefore, extracorporeal circulation is essential in cardiac surgery (except for a very few small surgeries where heart function isn’t compromised). Only the artificial heart-lung machine can support the patient’s continuous arterial blood supply and venous blood recovery during surgery, preventing other organs and tissues from being damaged.
No high-tech replacents for the artificial heart-lung machine have been seen for the future so far.
