Chapter 49: A girl and forty-nine boys

With a habitual gesture, Xie Wanying touched her hair braid. To her surprise, the laughter in the classroom grew louder after her action. Her hand suddenly stiffened as if she sensed that sothing significant had occurred.
The classroom door creaked open, and soone walked in. The chatter and laughter in the room ca to an abrupt halt. This indicated that the person entering must be the guidance officer.
The man entering was in his twenties, tall, with a stylish fringe. He wore a short-sleeve white shirt, black trousers, and his bespectacled face broke away from the stereotype of a bookworm; the slight sternness in the corners of his phoenix eyes painted the image of a trendy young scholar as if leaping out from the pages of a book, refreshing to all.
It seed that so students recognized who the man was and whispered, “Is Instructor Ren going to be our guidance officer?”

Instructor Ren? What does that an? Xie Wanying pondered over the background and personality of the guidance officer of her class. Building a good relationship with the guidance officer was vitally important for students in the university.
“Hasn’t it been said that Instructor Ren was coming to be our guidance officer?”
The other students continued whispering about the guidance officer, each one aware of the officer’s importance.
“It was announced last night. It scared to death.”
“Is he any good?” This was asked by soone unaware of Instructor Ren’s background.
“Just talk to him, and you’ll know.” Those in the know obviously wanted to withhold information, as revealing the officer’s secrets could an asking for a beating.
“Can you at least tell his na?”
As soone asked this, the young scholar at the podium spoke up, “If you want to know my na, I’ll write it on the blackboard now. Read it carefully.”
Imdiately, the area beneath the podium fell silent as a tomb.
True to Instructor Ren’s reputation, the mont his voice rang out, everyone bowed in submission.
Tap tap tap, the chalk on the blackboard spelled out each character as if striking the board, and after the young scholar finished his swift, serious writing, three characters appeared before Xie Wanying and the other students: Ren Chongda.
“How about it, my na is quite good, isn’t it?” Tossing the chalk aside, Ren Chongda tapped his knuckles on the blackboard in the classic Teaching Whip manner.
No one dared to speak.
“What were you laughing at when I walked in just now?” Ren Chongda asked.
The freshn exhibited various behaviors: so with raised eyelids, others with heads bowed, and still others twirling pens. Unique postures abounded. Only Xie Wanying sat calmly in the middle, her face nearly expressionless.
Ren Chongda’s gaze was fixed on her alone. The other students were on the verge of laughter again, struggling to contain themselves.
“Do you know the reason why?” Ren Chongda addressed the question to her alone.
Xie Wanying lifted her eyelids and t the guidance officer’s gaze with calm eyes, her own betraying not the slightest ripple.
Instead, Ren Chongda would take aback by her look, his cool lips curling in a half-smile, “It seems you know.”
After his words, the laughter that had been suppressed in the classroom erupted once more, filling the room with roaring laughter.
