“She wants to see her grandson, and her son didn’t bring the child to visit her? That’s strange,” said the neighbor auntie. “Her grandson is in elentary school. He should be picked up from school by his mother about now.”
During the conversation, the thudding sound of a child climbing the stairs could be heard. A little boy carrying a backpack, just over ten years old, wearing a school uniform and a red scarf, his face covered with glasses, climbed to the middle of the stairs and, looking up at Xie Wanying, turned back to say, “Mom, there’s soone standing at our front door.”
“Who is it?” Along with that question, a thirty-sothing woman appeared on the staircase, standing alongside the boy.
“That’s his mother-in-law, Miao Fen,” the neighbor auntie introduced to Xie Wanying and then said to the mother and son, “Doctors from the hospital where your mother-in-law is admitted are looking for you.”
“What?” Miao Fen was shocked. “What’s happened to my mother-in-law in the hospital?”
“Didn’t your husband tell you about your mother-in-law?” The neighbor aunt pursued.
“Don’t even ntion it. His mom was hospitalized a few days ago, and when I asked him what happened, he told to mind my own business. Just yesterday, he was saying that his mother was about to be discharged. My mother-in-law doesn’t have a phone, so I can’t contact her. I don’t even know which hospital she’s in, so I can’t visit. What’s going on? Why would doctors co looking for us?” Miao Fen asked with bewildernt, walking up with her child to stand in front of Xie Wanying, “Are you my mother-in-law’s doctor?”
“I’m a dical student and have seen Aunt Wang at the hospital. I’ve co to find you because her condition has beco very serious, but she wishes to see her grandson.”
Upon hearing this, Miao Fen’s face turned ashen, and her fists clenched tightly. “That bastard Zhang Hao, keeping all this from —what’s he trying to do!”
She was cursing her own husband.
“Oh my, oh my,” the neighbor auntie covered her head. “That’s inexcusable, such an unfilial son. When he got into gambling debts, you and your mother-in-law shouldn’t have helped him pay it off. He’s keeping it from everyone; probably doesn’t want to get her treatnt, just wants the money—”

“Mommy,” the little boy tugged at his mother’s clothes, “what’s wrong with Grandma?”
“Your grandma has been hospitalized. The doctor says she’s sick. Your father is not a good man; he even lied to us, saying your grandma was getting better!” Miao Fen was so angry she was seething.
The little boy with glasses widened his eyes in surprise at the adults. It seed as if he understood yet didn’t understand the adult conversation, his gaze filled with nurous question marks.
The situation in the patient’s ho was quite chaotic, but Xie Wanying, thinking of the patient with limited ti left, made a direct request, “Could you bring your son to the hospital to see her right now?”
