Academic conferences, of course, are mostly attended by professionals. Being a doctor is a lifelong learning profession. Often, beyond their routine duties, they need to study, and learning from the most advanced peers is a very effective thod.
The doctors attending the conference either had their departnts cover the expenses for learning, or they had to pay out of their own pockets.
