Chapter 997: [997] The Harassed Lecturer

An hour quickly passed by, and the presentation was nearly at its end. Professor Hao picked up the thermos cup from the table, took a sip of water to moisten his throat, and once again encouraged the audience to actively participate, asking, “Everyone can speak up with any ideas or thoughts they have so we can discuss them.”

The greatest significance of an academic conference lies in the exchange of ideas, not just in lecturing. Experts co to give lectures more to attract attention from their peers to the progress of their research projects, and hope for tily valuable suggestions. Experts are also looking for inspirational insights.

The audience below the stage was admittedly uncomfortable with the prodding from the expert. Experts are experts; they are certainly at the forefront of knowledge and the deepest in research in their focused fields. What should they say? They feared they might end like the one who asked a question earlier, being quickly dismissed by the expert as if the question was child’s play.

“I have a question.” Finally, soone else raised their hand high.

Professor Hao was very pleased and gestured for them to ask, “Please stand up and speak, doctor.”

Xie Wanying, along with the others, turned back and saw that the hand raised belonged to Doctor Xiao Yang, a fellow townsman she had just t.

After receiving the microphone, Xiao Yang asked, “Doctor Hao, I would like to know if this technique is currently the most advanced at Juyang Hospital. What is the reason that other hospitals rarely perform it? Where lie the obstacles? Is it simply because suitable patients are few?”

“You’ve raised a very targeted question,” Professor Hao approved of his conclusion, “Indeed, it is used less frequently in clinical practice. One major reason we estimate is that it involves radiotherapy. Poorly administered radiotherapy can result in damage from the treatnt. Therefore, it requires hardware support and a supportive environnt, and places high demands on the operating techniques of physicians. Patients treated in the early stages might sowhat resemble guinea pigs, needing doctors to accumulate experience through exploration. — You are a doctor from which hospital? Are you from the Capital?”

“I’m from Xuanwu Hospital, just joined general surgery not long ago, and it feels like our departnt hasn’t started using this technology,” Xiao Yang said.

“We have done it before,” Wei Guoyuan quietly reminded the young man who was new to their hospital, “it’s just that we’ve been doing it less over the years.”

Getting the hint from his colleague, Xiao Yang supplented his statent to the keynote speaker, “Yes, as you said, Doctor Hao, the technique is demanding and the effects are not very significant.”

Techniques with high operational difficulty are naturally hard to widely implent in clinical practice as doctors’ learning abilities vary, and not all are geniuses. Similarly feasible procedures could yield vastly different outcos due to the different skill levels among doctors.

Like this kind of dical procedure which even the dosage standards association has difficulty recomnding universally, to avoid dical risks, the best choice for most doctors and patients is to simply not perform it at all. Besides this technique, Professor Hao ntioned that there are other alternative treatnt options available, which are relatively safer.

Therefore, Xiao Yang once again inquired, “I’m a bit curious about the reasons Doctor Hao insists on this technique.”

Young people are different, like brave warriors — they speak without mincing words, seemingly unaware of the depth and niceties of the issues, as if inadvertently revealing the blade’s edge.

Wei Guoyuan couldn’t help but laugh. Bringing young people into the departnt is said to be for their youthful energy and enthusiasm, but it’s more about their capacity to stir things up in stagnant waters.

The keynote speaker, Professor Hao, showed a trace of embarrassnt on his face as he wiped the sweat from his palms and said, “Regarding the reasons for this persistence — I’m not sure if any of my colleagues present here have other views?”

A hand was raised. Luo Jingming turned his head and saw that it was Xie Wanying who had raised her hand.
