The wool scarf covered half of the man’s face, revealing only a pair of cold, sharp eyes, scanning the motley crew in front of him.

Rogues, beggars, vendors, and hooligans huddled together, their tattered clothes shivering in the wind and snow.

The man gripped the hilt of his sword, his voice deep,

"Go and bring Skinny Rat over."

The rats glanced at each other, ignored him, and closed their eyes.

"You’d better hurry and find Skinny Rat."

The man partially unsheathed his sword, "Or I’ll turn you all into corpses."

"Alright, honorable sir, don’t trouble my people."

A tall, thin figure erged from the back door of the tavern, it was the leader of the underground rats of the border town, Skinny Rat.

"Speak, sir, what orders does Viscount Wenner have?" Skinny Rat asked casually.

The middle-aged man turned around, looking at Skinny Rat, "Find out the whereabouts of Black Pine Ridge Lord Luo De Tulip."

Skinny Rat lazily stomped, splashing a bit of snow.

"Luo De Tulip? That’s not an easy task."

Skinny Rat shook his head slightly, "Things in Frost Leaf Town are complicated; no one can figure out the bottom line there."

"He’s currently active in Eagle Ridge, his tracks aren’t hard to find."

The middle-aged man’s tone was as cold as ice, "He might also be in the White Deer territory; in any case, you must find his tracks."

"This place is too vast, I might need a month to find out," Skinny Rat replied.

"Seven days."

The middle-aged man glared at Skinny Rat, his words firm, "You have only seven days to find Luo De’s tracks."

"Five days is too short; if I go to Eagle Ridge, I might not make it back."

Skinny Rat pursed his lips, shaking his head to refuse the man’s task, "You should find soone else."

The middle-aged man gave no response, pulling a leather pouch from under his cloak. The clinking of tal was particularly clear, and he tossed it to Skinny Rat.

"This is just the deposit; there’s another half to co after the task is done."

The middle-aged man warned, "But if you ss it up, you’ll lose your head."

"Rember, Lord Wenner is not negotiating with you."

"You’re just a rat, you have no choice."

"If you can’t do it, there’s no need for you to exist."

The man snorted coldly, turned, and stepped into the snowstorm.

Skinny Rat stood in place, watching the middle-aged man’s departure, a faint smile gradually appearing on his face.

His fingers caressed the pouch, as if pondering over sothing.

A beggar leaned in, whispering, "Boss, do we really have to risk our necks for Viscount Wenner? Their attitude towards the lady has been awful."

Skinny Rat gave him a sidelong glance, a cold smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, "That’s not sothing you and I can decide."

Skinny Rat pushed the beggar aside, opened the purse and saw the copper coins, paused slightly, and snorted,

"Big family, huh? Stingy."

Skinny Rat casually tossed the purse to his subordinates,

"Divide it up and get ready to work."

...

...

At the northwestern border of Eagle Ridge, in a concealed mountain hollow.

This was once a small village of more than thirty households. Due to consolidation reasons, it has been abandoned.

But because of its hidden location, it’s handy for entering Frost territory, monitoring and raiding the border town, it beca a temporary military camp and command post.

In this war, Luo De never paid too much attention to land gains and losses.

Since the army’s numbers were limited, Luo De didn’t plan to divide his forces to guard and weaken his own army’s strength.

After all, the Northern Wasteland behind could accommodate them; Luo De always advocated plundering resources and population.

But the border town was different.

The border town is the throat entering the eastern side of the wasteland.

Though it’s not located at the break of a continuous mountain range like a military fortress, it blocks the only main road leading to the wasteland.

As long as the border town is occupied, and outposts are established around the surrounding mountains and valleys, any army would be hard-pressed to enter the wasteland from the east.

For Luo De, the border town is a fortress that can advance or retreat.

Luo De was well aware that the Cold Blade Clan wasn’t foolish either; the garrison inside the border town numbered at least eight hundred.

In this era, military discipline wasn’t as good as Luo De’s past life; if cohabiting with residents, incidents of civilian abuse and looting often occurred, making managent extrely difficult.

Eight hundred n had already reached the town’s capacity limit, general townships only held three to five hundred.

The remaining soldiers were stationed in a military camp between the border town and Frost Castle, which could quickly support each other from these three places.

Luo De didn’t intend to let his elite wear themselves out in hard fights but focus all his strength on surrounding key points and aiding assaults.

Chris and Gang Le were rounding up deserters and surrendering soldiers from various places, estimating the gathered numbers to reach a thousand.

These people would serve as the main force for the siege.

Seronie, along with the Wolfhoof cavalry, would utilize their mobility to harass the southeastern villages of the Cold Blade Clan, diverting the attention of the Cold Blade nobles.

Of course, Luo De wasn’t idly enjoying himself in the camp either.

After arranging the military affairs, Luo De also had to deal with the political affairs of Eagle Ridge.

The most important was the personnel of the Advisory Council; these had to be people loyal to Luo De.

After much consideration, Luo De sent for Usi, Luo Fu, Alya, and Prophet Bai Shuang to be gathered by his side.

The four of them traveled against the wind and snow, arriving at the camp with their fur coats covered in snowflakes.

"Lord!" "Saint Master!"

The four stood respectfully at the door of the tent, giving their greetings.

"You’ve had a hard ti traveling so far in the freezing weather."

Luo De waved them over from beside the brazier, "Co in quickly, warm yourselves by the fire."

"Yes, Lord/Saint Master."

The four nodded in agreent and took their seats around the brazier in turn.
