"Who is that? Why aren’t you picking up?" Ruby asked when I continued to stare at the phone.
"It’s Bryce. I wonder why he’s calling. He wasn’t supposed to call or text ," I murmured.
"He must have a reason; maybe he’s just checking up on you. He was the one who brought you to the hospital," she reminded .
"I know. I’ll call him after I return to my ward." I ignored the call and put the phone in my purse.
The phone rang two more tis, then went dead. We arrived at the hospital, and I snuck into my room. Ruby didn’t co with .
"I want to go ho and have a hot bath; I’ll return in the morning," she said. I didn’t refuse; I bid her goodbye and quietly returned to my ward.
I took off my dress, cleaned off my makeup, put on the patient gown, and slipped under my duvet. The door opened, and a nurse looked in. "You’re back. I saw the note you left. You shouldn’t have left your room," she said, walking in.
"I’m sorry; I just stepped out for a few minutes."
"Your surgery site hasn’t healed." She ca over to . "I’ll have to change the bandage."
"I covered my head with this," I said, showing her the fur cap.
"Doesn’t matter; the surgery site hasn’t healed—it’s still fresh. You took a big risk, and you stayed out for too long. I’ll inform the doctor about this, but first, I’ll change the bandage." She left and returned shortly after. She cleaned the surgery area and changed the cotton and the bandage.
"I’ll report to your doctor now." She left and ca back ten minutes later. "The doctor asked to monitor the wound closely. I’ll call him the mont I notice any swelling or redness."
"Oh, will it get infected?"
"I’m not sure. You kept the cap on throughout your stay, right?"
"Yes."
"Then it might not beco infected, but we can’t be too sure. I’ll monitor it closely; I’m on duty tonight."
"Oh, okay, thank you. And I’m sorry for troubling you; I know how busy you are. I apologize."
"No problem, it’s our job," she smiled and exited the room.
Bryce’s call ca in again.
I sighed and finally answered. "What?" I muttered, rolling my eyes.
"You shouldn’t have left your ward; your wound could get infected, and you could die from septic shock. You took a huge risk."
"I know, I’m sorry."
He sighed. "I was really holding back from calling you; I didn’t want to break my promise to you."
"I know..."
"You should stay in bed; I’ll end the call." He tried to hang up, but I stopped him.
"Wait!"
"What?" He asked, his voice gruff.
We haven’t talked about the hidden room. I have so many questions to ask him. What is that room? Are those skeletons real, or did I imagine them? And are those gold bars real?
I have so many questions.
"What is it?" He asked again when I didn’t speak up imdiately.
"The room... I heard from Ruby that you saved . Thank you."
He sighed. "I won’t scold you for going into that room, but do not try it again. That area is restricted; didn’t you see the sign?"
Was there a sign? I wasn’t aware.
"No."
He sighed again. "I’m busy; do you have a question for ?"
"I... saw skeletons; I also saw gold bars in the room. I was wondering... are those things real?"
"Yes," his answer was sharp and short. "They are real," he confird.
"Including the four skeletons I saw?"
He sighed for the third ti. "I don’t have ti for this discussion. But yes, they are real."
He doesn’t have ti for this discussion; why did he call ? He was the one who continuously called. Why is he claiming to be too busy now?

"Okay, I’ll end the call now."
"I will explain everything to you in due ti, but not today," he stated.
"Oh."
"I’ll end the call," he said and imdiately hung up.
I dropped the phone and relaxed against the hospital bed. The hospital bed is not as comfortable as my own, but it is manageable.
I closed my eyes and was about to fall asleep, but a knock stopped . The door opened, and Nanny Samantha poked her head in.
"Oh dear," she called.
"Samantha?"
"You’re awake." She rushed into the ward and closed the door behind her. "I brought homade food for you. There’s a lot of at inside; you need at to gain more strength." She ca into the room and opened the lunchbox.
"You haven’t had dinner, right? Or have you?" She set a table before and arranged the dishes. Four of them were at: beef, boiled chicken, fried chicken, and roasted turkey. And then eggs. White rice and sauce.
"Let get water; I didn’t bring any." She stood up, rushed out of the ward, and returned with a bottle of water, placing it on the table.
"Why haven’t you dug in yet? You’re a big eater, so I asked the chef to make a lot. Don’t you like it?" she asked.
I blinked, staring at the dishes.
It’s too late for this. It’s a few minutes before 2:00 am. Is it okay to eat all of this?
"Why?" She kept her gaze fixed on while I stayed silent.
"I... Can we wait until morning? I’ll eat all of this in the morning."
"You can eat it now; it’ll help in your recovery."
"Have you asked the nurse? Did she say it was okay?"
"No, I didn’t. Should I ask?"
"No. I’ll eat."
"Okay," she smiled, picked up the spoon, and gave it to .
I accepted and started with the rice and egg. Halfway through, the door opened and the nurse ca in; her eyes widened when she saw eating.
"What are you doing? You should be in bed, not eating," she exclaid.
"What?"
Nanny Samantha stood up and faced her. "I was the one who asked her to eat; she needs energy so the wound can heal properly."
"I’m not saying she shouldn’t eat, but this isn’t right; she already had dinner. Eating too much and eating this late might cause—" the nurse stopped speaking when my breathing changed.
"I think... I..."
She rushed over to . "Do you feel nauseated?" She asked, and I nodded.
"I want to throw up; the food is coming back up," I complained.
"Let bring a bag; wait a minute." She rushed out of the ward, but before she could return, I had already thrown up.
