Leilani.
Maya and I spent most of the evening watching Stranger things: season four, and sohow, her presence in the house had managed to make feel better.
I no longer thought about my weirdly evil family and everything they did to in the past. However, I did think about the countless ways I could get back at them, as well as find out what they must’ve done to to make my wolf so weak.
During the course of our movie ti, I attended to a few work calls and emails, and about an hour into the movie, my doorbell rang.
"Our food is here!" Maya squealed in excitent, and I could only laugh as she jumped to her feet.
I watched her round the sofa and run off to get the door, but a minute passed and then two... I heard nothing. I stood up quickly and rushed to the door to check on what was holding her back, but to my utter dismay, I found Gavin standing there, his face flushed and his hair ssy. But he wasn’t trying to talk to Maya, no. He was trying to co into the house.
I frowned upon seeing him and spat; "What the hell are you doing here, Gavin?"
He turned his gaze toward my direction as soon as he heard my voice, and I could only glare at him in confusion when a quiet sigh escaped his lips. He drawled; "I ca to see you, sister!"
Sister?
Did the jerk just call sister?
Annoyance rose in the bottom of my stomach like vomit and I took a cautious step back when he tried to co closer.
He rushed out; "I know that you do not wish to see and I understand that. For real, I do; and sincerely, I wouldn’t wish to see too if I were you. However, I just found out that you had nothing to do with that rogue attack four years ago... you know, the one that we blad you for because we found so incriminating chats in your old phone..." He said, and goddess, I didn’t know how to feel when I heard him say those words.
I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry; and I certainly didn’t know if it would be nice to simply walk up to him and give him one resonating slap.
My hand balled into tight fists as I glared at him emotionlessly and with my voice as cold as glaciers, I seethed; "So what do you want to do about it now?"
"Leilani—"
"I rember how desperately I begged you people to listen to . How hard I tried to explain that I never had anything to do with the attack, but did you ever listen?"
He didn’t shy away. He shook his head. "No."
"So tell , Gavin, what did you guys do?" I asked, but this ti, he didn’t respond right away. He simply watched carefully, his eyes softening as he said;
"I’m trying to make it up to you. Can’t you see that I’m trying? I can’t sleep... I can’t eat... I can’t do anything without thinking about you and how I can get you to forgive m—"
"And even up until now, the only thing you care about is yourself!" I snapped, interrupting him. "The only thing you care about is how this whole scenario makes you feel and not how I am supposed to react to it." I answered coldly, causing him to gasp.
And since he didn’t say anything else, I took the opportunity to continue to speak. I added; "Now, back to the question I asked you that you could not provide an answer to, you all branded as a traitor. You, my so-called brother, punished dearly until I almost lost my life, and do you know what? I had to have my skin grafted just to hide the scars you gave ."
Maya gasped and angry tears welled up in my eyes when she stuck her fist into her mouth and looked away.
I knew she was crying. I didn’t even need to look to know that she was... and what hurt her the most was the fact that she had been paired with the sa monster that almost killed , not once but countless tis.
Gavin, on the other hand, looked torn. He stumbled backward and closed his eyes, drawing in a ragged breath as he whispered; "I’m sorry, Leilani."
"I know you are." I answered coldly. "But sorry cannot undo what you did to . It cannot change the past and cannot heal the wounds you opened." Then with a smaller voice, I added; "I don’t hate you anymore... I used to, but I don’t anymore. I just want you out of my life for good."
"Leilani please..."
"I just need you to let be. That will make really happy."
As soon as I said that, he stopped talking and dropped his head, and I knew that he was contemplating my words because he then began to mumble under his breath.
After a mont, he glanced up at , his eyes wild but stubborn. He asked; "Do you have any idea where your old phone might be?"
I frowned. "I’m not sure, why?"
"I need it." He answered after a mont, "Leilani, I’ll walk out of your life but I need to clear your na first. I need everyone to see that you’ve always been innocent, and for that reason, I’ll need that phone."
"Why?" I asked again, and this ti, when he stepped closer, I didn’t move away.
He drawled; "I need to get my hands on those text ssages that incriminated you, and to see if I can trace them back to whoever sent them."
I froze.
Gosh, I didn’t want to believe Gavin but he looked genuine... he sounded genuine but hurt. And looked like one of those movie characters desperately trying to get redemption.
My eyes snagged on his face for a mont too long— a face that I haven’t seen this closely for several years now— and I nodded stiffly; "Okay, I’ll et with you tomorrow. But not here. I don’t want you coming to my house anymore. Alpha Jarek took the phone four years ago and I suspect that he never threw it away, so I’ll need to ask him first."
"And if he finds it?" He asked softly and I shrugged.
"Then I’ll ask Maya to call you and give you the location of the place I would want us to et."
He nodded. "Fair."
And then he did sothing I would’ve never expected him to do in a thousand lives. He pulled into a hug, patted my back gently and rushed away before I could even recover from the shock.
My heart raced rapidly in my chest, but not because he’d managed to thaw the ice in my heart, but because he had touched in the exact sa place where I used to bear his scar.
—And goddess, at the mont, I wasn’t sure I could ever bring myself to forgive him.
Especially since I had never healed emotionally.
