I had a dream last night and ever since I woke up, I’ve been feeling quite uneasy.
My chest felt tight and my ribs felt like they’d been crushed by a rock. So days ago, Father’s lawyer had called to say that the reading of the will will have to be pushed to a later date— which was today, and while I thought at first that my discomfort was due to it, the pain in my chest told otherwise.
Just as I thought these things, Caelum walked over, looking good in an unbuttoned flowery shirt and free white pants. He walked barefoot, mindlessly stepping on the grass as he approached .
However, it wasn’t until he was close that I noticed the frown etched deep into his face. He drawled; "I don’t feel too good."
" neither."
"Do you think the eting later today has sothing to do with it?" He asked as he ca to stand beside , his eyes drawn to sothing in the distance.
"I thought so until... I began to feel worse." I explained, "...and now, I don’t know what to think."
"It’s Leilani." Another voice called from behind and I froze for a second before turning to face Zevran who had the iciest stoniest expression on his face. "I don’t know what happened to her but I heard from
Gavin that she’s been hospitalized." He added, and as soon as that bombshell landed, I stilled.
Pain like no other lanced through my chest, which was strange because I’ve seen her in pain before. I’ve seen her sick, injured... near death even, but I’ve never for once felt this horrible.
I’ve never felt her pain or anything of the sort, so I couldn’t help but wonder why I was feeling it now all of a sudden.
My hands shook as I stumbled closer to Zevran, my voice trembling as I asked; "Since when?"
"Since yesterday, apparently!" He answered coldly. "Gavin doesn’t know everything, the little he knows ca from a girl nad Maya."
Just as I was about to respond to that, the sound of feet hitting the grass seeped into my ears and I turned just in ti to see Chalice stomping over, a worried expression on her face.
"Leilani filed a lawsuit against my parents!" She cried, and as soon as I heard those words, my blood boiled.
I gritted my teeth to stop from lashing out at her, but my frown soon turned into a grimace then a smile when Caelum snickered;
"Why are you mad? It’s not like she’s lying against them. They’re guilty of everything she accused them of."
Zevran snorted at that, but Caelum, probably looking for an avenue to channel his rage, continued;
"I heard about it. She accused them of battery, emotional and physical abuse, and neglect. Are those not real? Didn’t you people, just like us, really hurt her like that?"
"She’s sued us for our own cris and won, y’all can get your asses sued as well." Zevran added, and with a small glint in his eyes, he dropped his voice and drawled; "...and trust , she’ll win."
Chalice’s face colored a bright red. She covered her face with her hands and began to weep, but this ti, I didn’t care. None of us moved an inch. We simply shared glances as she continued to cry, her shoulders shaking violently.
"You should be grateful she didn’t sue you for framing her," Caelum added, causing Chalice to cry even harder.
I begrudgingly pulled her into my arms when I noticed Micah and his father standing at a far distance.
And seizing the opportunity, she wrapped her arms around my waist, sobbing quietly while Zevran and Caelum could only hang around us in annoyance, their irritation evident in their eyes.
Shortly afterwards, I got a text from mother, inviting us to Father’s private eting room and upon arrival, I wasn’t so surprised when we realized that Micah and his father were already present, along with so other people.
Our family’s lawyer was seated at a far end, his smile cold as he bowed to us. He muttered; "Alphas."
"Mr Shane, it’s nice to see you again." I replied, taking his hand for a handshake.
My brothers mirrored my actions and after we were done, we sat down, clasped our hands together and waited for him to read the will.
I watched in anticipation— part of antsy because I needed to find out how Leilani was faring— as he brought out his files from his briefcase, and after reading through it for a few seconds, he raised his eyes to et mine and asked;
"Are you married now?"
Caelum answered. "Yes. Our wife is even pregnant as we speak."
At his words, Mr Shane’s eyes landed on Chalice and held, and I saw a flicker of sothing weird cross his features before he looked away and nodded. "She is Luna now, right?"
"I nodded. "Right."
"Then according to your father’s will, you three are to inherit all he has in his na: The pack, the estates and all his assets. You’re also the sole owners of the companies in New York, Seattle and Canada: Ontario. Your cousin, Micah is to inherit the company in New Zealand and now holds the position of Gamma in the pack."
I frowned, and just then, I turned to find Micah stewing in rage. He was so pissed, the veins on his forehead stood on end.
But he wasn’t looking at .
He was looking at Chalice and his eyes held so much contempt, it would’ve made shudder if I was soone weak.
I stared at him until he caught watching, and then I bead a small smile at him. I drawled; "My father was the previous Alpha, and now, my brothers and I rule the pack. Yes?"
"Yes," the lawyer and the others present nodded in agreent.
"And that ans we have every right to do as we please with the pack. Right?"
"Yes." Their responses ca again, but Micah wasn’t answering. I guess he knows where this was headed.
My eyes t his briefly before I turned to my brothers and said; "So to that effect, I say— as the Alpha of the pack— that Micah has every right to retain the company my father left in his na; But he is not going to be our Gamma; and in fact, we do not need one."
Chaos erupted.
If Micah was pissed before them now he was about to explode. His eyes t mine and for the first ti, he could hardly hide the anger in his gaze... the hatred and the malice.
His father was the first to recover. He snarled; "But your father—"
"Is dead." Zevran interjected. "We rule the pack now and Father’s beta is our current beta. And his son will take up the position after him."
"We’re done here." I added, "Now, thank you Mr Shane for coming here today." I greeted with a smile.
This ti, I didn’t even bother to pretend with Chalice, I helped mother up and pulled her out of the room, ignoring the protests from Micah and his father.
We all knew that they never expected that this would turn out this way.
They also didn’t even expect that father would try to make Micah our gamma, or that he would will just one company to him instead of the fortunes they’d been expecting.
When I was sure that we’d walked out of earshot, I turned to my brothers and said; "We’re traveling to NYC today."
"We need to see Leilani." Caelum added, and at that, mother’s ears perked up.
She turned to us in disbelief and asked; "Why? Haven’t you guys rejected her yet?"
"No." We answered simultaneously, but before she could respond, Chalice joined in. She cried; "I’m coming with you."
But I didn’t care.
I cast her a single glance and turned away, smirking when she tried so hard to appear pitiful.
She had no idea that I —we— knew that she’d been sleeping with a guard for food while being pregnant with our child.
And she also doesn’t know that we’ll be conducting a DNA test on the child as soon as it is born, while serving her divorce papers in the sa breath.
Caelum flashed her a smile and shrugged, his eyes filled with mischief as he said; "Of course, my lady! Anything you want."
And she smiled, like the completely clueless dunce that she was.
