Leilani.

For several seconds, I simply sat there, with my hands balled into fists while I stared at Zevran like he had lost his mind— and maybe he has because what the fuck?

What the actual—?

I couldn’t respond, not to that stupid question. And I also didn’t want to sit here listening to him say things as infuriating as that to simply because he— and his brothers— had co to my rescue for once.

Just once in their stupid lives!

It felt like he had selectively forgotten about the tis they had hurt in ways unimaginable. There were many tis in the past where I’d been in worse situations than what Keisha put through, and it had all been all thanks to them. So what the hell was wrong with his brain?

A mont passed between us, and when he finally realized that I wouldn’t respond, he looked away from and heaved a sigh.

"I’m sorry I asked that." He murmured under his breath.

And maybe I should’ve understood. Maybe I should be nicer to him... but I couldn’t help but respond with a snarky; "You should be sorry."

He froze.

His eyes t mine in that instant and I gasped at the intensity of whatever shit it was that I found swirling in his dark eyes. He rose slowly to his feet and quietly marched over, his eyes never leaving my face even once as he muttered;

"You want to hate us—"

"I indeed do..." I responded, interrupting him; But that didn’t deter him. He continued;

"But you cannot. Leilani, I don’t know if you haven’t noticed but we are ant to be. The moon goddess paired us for a reason—"

"Yeah right, she did. And she selectively paired with married n?!" I snapped. And as soon as I said that, he snapped his lips shut.

It suddenly looked as though the entire fight had been suddenly sucked out of him when his shoulders hunched over. He whispered; "You will never forgive that, right?"

"I don’t think I’ll ever forgive anything you all did." I answered truthfully, my voice breaking slightly when distorted mories from my past flashed across my mind.

I cleared my throat and shook my head, as if trying to dispel those dark tis, and added; "...so it’ll be nice if you all stopped trying."

"Leilani..."

"I’m trying to be civil here—" I began to say but stopped when his hand shot out to wrap around my upper arm.

My eyes widened when that singular contact sent jolts of electricity shooting through my body and straight to my core. And even though he wasn’t holding onto so tightly, I realized that I couldn’t fight back. I felt trapped.

I snapped; "Let go."

"You hurt us..." he whispered, his voice ice cold but pleading at the sa ti— and I don’t understand how that is possible. "You hurt us terribly, and even though that doesn’t justify what we did to you, we hurt you too. So why’s it that we ARE trying to put all of that behind us but you’re unwilling to do the sa?!"

The laugh that wrenched free from my mouth was flat and devoid of any emotion. I laughed so much that my chest hurt; and I snorted; "I hurt you?"

"Yes, you did."

"Are you that dense?"

The insult left my mouth before I could stop it and I frowned when he didn’t even react to it. Instead. He simply nodded and hissed;

"If wanting you back ans I am dense, then yes I am."

And that... that was the final straw. That cented my belief that he was indeed crazy. I wrenched my arm free from his hold and pushed him away from . And I didn’t realize how strong the force of my push was until he staggered backward with wide eyes.

I spat; "You’re married to my sister who is pregnant with your child—"

"Caelum’s child." He cut in imdiately, and as if suddenly realizing his mistake, he shook his head and added; "...the child is still mine. I know. But do you get what I an?"

No, I didn’t.

I didn’t want to.

So I shook my head. "It doesn’t matter. What is done is done, so let’s all agree that the moon goddess made a mistake by pairing us together. I’ve moved on and you should too."

Zevran staggered backwards again, his face contorting in pain. He shook his head as he whispered sothing under his breath that I could hardly hear. And when he looked up at again, his eyes were dark and stormy.

But he didn’t co close.

He drawled; "I just realized that I cannot. Maybe my brothers can, but I, Zevran Stormborn, cannot. And I’d rather jump from the peak of the highest mountain than live another day knowing that you’ll never be mine."

At his words, my chest instantly felt like it had been crushed by a rock. Breathing beca difficult and my tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth.

Maybe I should hate my body, but it soon began to tremble slightly and a weird kind of warmth spread through my chest.

Stupid stupid mate bond!

Pushing against these sensations, I looked him dead in the eye and whispered; "You should try visiting the Himalayas then. I’m sure you’ll find the mountain Everest sowhere around there. It is the tallest in the world."

The look on his face as soon as he heard say that made wish I could take back my words, but before he could respond, I let my eyes roll backward and slumped into the bed, pretending to faint.

His panicked voice yelled out my na continuously and when I wouldn’t respond, he began to ring for a doctor, whilst I secretly smiled, happy that this conversation had co to an end.

If Chalice can do it, then so can I.

By the ti I finally woke up several hours later because I had sohow fallen asleep during the process of ’pretending to faint’, Zevran was nowhere to be found and so were his brothers.

Jarek also was not here yet, but on the bright side, there was Maya who was fast asleep beside .

I wiped my eyes slowly as I sat up in bed, but upon looking at my bedside table, I froze, because right there was a large bouquet of red roses.

There was no note with it. No nothing. But I imdiately knew who this had co from as soon as I saw it.

It was Darius.

He was here!

My eyes darted around the room in slight panic and my heart fluttered in my chest when I suddenly noticed a strange figure standing on the other end of the door and looking into my room.

The person didn’t move even when he caught watching and I could hardly see whoever it was’ face due to how dark it was now and how dim the lighting was.

But if there is sothing I couldn’t miss, then it was the stranger’s shiny purple eyes.

My breath caught in my throat.

Against my better judgent, I raised my hand slowly and waved, my heart hamring like a wild bird against its cage— my ribs— when he waved back before quietly walking away.

And goddess, I couldn’t go back to sleep after that.

In fact, I never did.
