Leilani.
The next couple of days flew by quickly and before I knew it, it was almost Christmas.
The streets were filled with several wonderful decorations and people walking around with genuine smiles on their faces.
I swept my hair away from my face as I marched through the snowy streets, trudging behind Maya who looked as though she was having the ti of her life.
Well... I, on the other hand, wasn’t having any damn ti of my life as I couldn’t stop thinking about the final court hearing tomorrow.
Tomorrow was supposed to be the day that the case with my family will finally be resolved— or escalated, and I wanted to know, to see the lengths that Mr and Mrs Blackthorne would go to save themselves. I also wanted to know if they would get to release the video that Agnes talked about.
I also wanted to find out why they had intentionally suppressed my wolf for so long and why they were so unbothered even after finding out about everything Chalice did.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when I bumped into Maya’s back. I winced, holding my head as I took a step back and frowned.
"Why did you stop?"
"The question should be why were you so distracted?" She snorted, turning around to face .
My eyes lit up when I noticed the small fancy keychain in her hands, but then, I frowned again when she pushed it into her pocket and snickered; "You’ve been lost in thoughts since we started picking out the decorations for your house. What is the problem?"
"Nothing."
"Don’t give that, Leilani." She snapped. "It’s not nothing. You know you can always talk to about anything right?"
"And you know you can talk to about anything too, right?" I shot back at her, not missing the way she cocked her eyebrows at before whispering in a small voice.
"Yes."
"So why didn’t you tell that you’ve been seeing Gavin?" I asked coldly, my voice coming out way harsher than I had intended.
At my words, her eyes widened slightly but then she blinked and looked away, sighing under her breath. "I didn’t want to tell you anything about that because I didn’t know how you’d feel about it."
Her excuse would’ve sounded palpable if I wasn’t already in my feelings. So I snorted and hissed; "Yeah, right."
"You won’t understand Leilani, he’s my mate. I know that that doesn’t an shit, but the mate bond pulls to him. It forces to want to see the good in him, and—"
"You think it doesn’t pull towards the triplets?"
"—it doesn’t help that he’s been trying to make up for all his wrongdoings."
We both said at the sa ti and stopped to glare at each other without saying another word. A mont of awkward silence passed between us before she finally walked closer, took my hands into hers and sighed.
Her shoulders hunched over as she looked away from my face and muttered; "I never thought about it that way."
"And maybe you should also realize that I’m more pissed that you decided to hide it from than the fact that you’re now with him."
Maya turned to then, her face scrunched up as she hissed; "Hell, no! We’re not together yet. I’ve just been helping him out with a few things."
"A few things like what?" I sassed suspiciously.
Goddess if she ntions , I’ll kill her!
"Like telling him the kind of gifts you like. Like helping him out by gathering facts that can help with your case, and—"
"You’re both ’bonding’ by using as an excuse?" I asked, not missing the way she gulped, nor the way her face turned into a bright shade of red.
"NO!"
"Forgive if I don’t believe you."
"He’s been trying to get his hands on the video. Also, I had to help him with putting the information he’s gathered over the last couple of weeks into a flash drive and he intends to take them to the Alphas of your old pack!"
"Aka the triplets!" I seethed in annoyance.
Goddess, I shouldn’t be mad that they were trying to help. So why the fuck do I still feel so... so triggered. So annoyed?
I turned away from her, dusted off the little bits of snow that had landed on my shoulders and resud my trek.
"Lani!" She called out, "I’m sorry. I thought I was trying to help!"
And yes, she was. Yes, I understood why she would even want to do that... but it doesn’t change the fact that Gavin was just as bad as the rest. That he was the one who physically abused the most.
—And that every ti I tried to forgive him, I could not help but think back to those monts... those dark days where death was an escape I never got, when being ignored was a luxury I craved for.
I balled my hands into fists as I continued to march all the way to my house, and by the ti I arrived at the front door, I froze.
Because Jack was standing there!
He had been severely injured when Keisha and her group of thugs attacked my house all those days ago; But now... now he looked different.
His eyes flashed when he saw approaching, and then he bowed; "I am sorry I couldn’t protect you the other day, ma’am."
"You were hurt so it is fine." I answered dismissively, hoping to brush past him into the house as I was still so salty from my argunt with Maya.
However, I halted in my tracks when he suddenly spoke to , his voice carrying a bit of fear as he muttered under his breath; "The man who brings you flowers everyday is known as Alpha Darius Morningstar."
I froze then spun around to face him.
"Huh?" I snorted and when he still wouldn’t respond right away, I added; "How do you know that?"
"I did a background check on him and I discovered that his pack is kept a secret from the rest of the world. But it’s no secret that he’s a dark knight."
A dark knight.
The sa set of people that Jarek’s warned ti and ti again to stay away from?
My heart began to race as the maths began to fall into place in my head and I staggered backward until my back hit the wall.
"What else do you know about him?" I drawled softly, my voice shaking despite my attempt to sound brave.
Goddess I couldn’t be brave... I could never be! Not right now, not when everything was beginning to lead straight to a dead end.
"Nothing besides the fact that he belongs to an ancient family, and that your parents owe this said family so sort of debt. I don’t know what the debt is, but I know that your father, Mr Blackthorne, has been looking for ways to settle it... and he’s been failing."
This news ca to as a shock but what worried the most was how all these had anything to do with .
And why Darius had singled out from my siblings when his main focus should be Gavin or Chalice.
But never .
It was never supposed to be .
