The first thing I saw waiting for by my porch when I woke up the next morning was a paper box, and in it were two transparent bags containing two different shades of auburn hair. There was also a bottle of pain killers, a pair of new handgloves... and nothing else,
But I didn’t need to be told by anyone to know that it ca from Zevran.
I also needed no one to tell before knowing that these hairs belonged to my parents.
My heart ward at the thoughtand for a very brief second, I almost felt bad for talking to him the way I did last night, and for the way things were left between us... until I rembered that it was Zevran Stormborn we were talking about here. The sa Zevran Stormborn who had always stood by in the past while I was treated like a complete garbage.
The sa one who once allowed Chalice to bully at every chance she got...
...and the sa one who eventually joined her in bullying despite finding out that we were mates.
The thought made whatever affection or compassion I’d managed to develop in these past few minutes go down the drain, and I sighed as I picked the items up before returning into my house.
The result of Gavin’s DNA that I had taken in for testing had co in earlier today; and surprisingly, there were so bits of match. It showed that we shared so genes. That we were related; But sothing about the result still did not feel enough for to draw a conclusion from... and that is why I was grateful that Zevran had given this... that he had thought of it despite telling him off last night.
Goddess, if we had a better kind of relationship, I may have thanked him. But I didn’t want to reach out to him.
I didn’t want to give him the idea that we had reached that stage where we could easily reach out to each other.
And frankly, I never wanted us to.
My hand hovered over my phone as I contemplated calling Jarek to tell him about this, but upon the realization that only he had the ability to help right now, I picked up the phone and dialed his number.
It rang and rang but he didn’t pick up.
One ring turned into three... and then into several more; But still, he wasn’t answering.
My heart raced with thoughts I couldn’t bring myself to voice out, and without stopping to think my actions through, I picked up my keys and raced out of my house.
The drive to his house was a quick one— mostly because I was violating every traffic rule there is— and by the ti I finally arrived at the front of his very imposing mansion, I was completely out of breath, flushed beyond reasonable doubt and panting uncontrollably as I rushed out of my car.
From my peripheral vision, I noticed the people hanging around in the shadows, pretending to walk about, when in truth, they were simply watching my every move, scrutinizing my actions and checking to see if I was a threat to their safety. Or that of their Alpha’s.
It was one of the downsides of visiting any Alpha unannounced... not like I cared right now.
So ignoring their stares, I stord towards the main door, pushed it open and made my way to his room which was on the highest floor of his house. And as soon as I arrived, my breath imdiately hitched when I found Jarek sprawled on the floor in a downward position, his face buried into the fur rug around the foot of his bed.
But it wasn’t his position that scared the most.
It was his skin— completely drenched in sweat and bright red with claw marks here and there.
He was also shaking visibly; But not just shaking. He was having tremors!
Before I could help myself, tears sprung into my eyes as I slowly made my way towards him, not forgetting to make loud sounds so as not to spook him.
When I was a few feet away from him, I knelt to the floor, carefully touched his shoulders and froze when he stilled at the contact.
And goddess, my heart wouldn’t stop racing. My body wouldn’t stop trembling. And to my utmost horror, it slowly began to look like his entire back was contracting. I do not know how to explain it, but it looked like it was shrinking in size with every passing second... until he sprung at .
Like literally sprung at .
His hand—with his claws protruded— shot out to smack my face, and thank the goddess that I was fast enough to duck or it would’ve been disastrous. Completely and utterly disastrous.
If I wasn’t scared before then I was utterly terrified when his eyes t mine and I saw the complete unfamiliarity in them.
I whispered; "Jay?"
But he didn’t respond. He simply tilted his head to the side and pinned with the most scary glare I’ve ever seen.
"Jarek, it’s , Leilani." I said again; But still, he didn’t look like he could hear . If anything, he looked like he wanted to eat — and not in the sexual way he had implied so days ago.
Fear clawed its way up my spine when he wouldn’t stop looking at in that maniacal manner but because I was too afraid to flee, in fear that he would attack if I turned my back on him, I kept my eyes trained on him and whispered;
"What happened?"
But still, no response. Just his dark eyes pinning with the scariest glare that I wanted to shit my pants.
"Are you having an episode?" I asked, my voice rising a few notches when he stalked closer, so close that I could sll the ferality on him. So close that I could see the darkness swirling in his eyes like a freaking tornado.
’Goddess please save !’ I prayed quickly when it began to dawn on that there was no other way out of here; But just as I said that quick prayer, he lunged...
And hell, as soon as his hand hit my midriff, I felt the air get knocked out of .
I felt like I was about to die.
And as I fell to the floor, a dark chuckle slipped past my lips.
Why?
Because if I died today, then it’ll be funny. And it’ll be funny because at the end, it’ll be known that I was killed by the person I felt safest with.
And that was not a good way to go!
