Zevran.

My first instinct was to run. To get us as far away from here as possible because truth be told, I wasn’t scared for my safety— I have been in worse situations before.

However, I was afraid for Leilani and what may happen to her.

I was worried that these people do not an any good. I had a vague idea what they wanted— and I knew damn well that it could never be as I had no business whatsoever with them.

I wasn’t the one they’d taken their ti to drug nor the one they’d had their eyes on for the most of tonight; And I’d rather die than let them take her away— Lycans or not.

My hands shook as I clutched the wheel, and despite the fact that I knew— I an I could see— how outnumbered I was, I didn’t stop even as they began raining rocks and sticks on my windshield and windows.

My eyes darted to the side and when I noticed Leilani sleeping peacefully in her seat, I heaved out a sigh of relief— call crazy but I’d rather that she doesn’t see this— and stepped hard on the brakes.

The tires screeched loudly as I made the sharpest quickest U-turn I’ve ever made in my entire life. And after I was able to turn the car in the direction I wanted, I stepped hard on the gas, almost falling face first in my seat when the car lurched forward.

As I tried to drive out of the parking lot, the large-looking guy who had tried to stop earlier pounded heavily on the window and maybe that was what finally fueled my resolve to flee because I found myself driving like a crazed beast, my heart pounding in my chest as I could only think about one thing: Leilani’s safety.

And even then, they didn’t stop pursuing us as I could vaguely see their cars chasing after us from my rearview mirror.

They pursued us for a long ti— so long that I couldn’t rember how long I drove— and by the ti I finally lost them, or they lost , it was already several hours into the night.

The cold air was still and quiet, filling the car with a weird kind of tension; And because I had no idea where we were any longer, I drove to the nearest beach, shut down the car and stepped out to breathe in the fresh air.

And it wasn’t until this mont that I noticed that my hands still trembled slightly. My heart too was still racing so rapidly and the fear clawing through my bones hadn’t stopped. I walked over to Leilani’s side of the car and pulled it open, and when she still wouldn’t budge even after calling out her na, I placed a finger under her nostrils and sighed when I felt the warm air on my skin.

She was fine.

She was safe.

And that was all that mattered.

That was what mattered more than not having her by my side for all of eternity.

It mattered more than the jealousy I felt when I saw her in the arms of Frostclaw.

I subconsciously brushed the hair out of her face and shuddered when a strange kind of warmth filled my bones at the contact, and without a single thought in my mind, I leaned closer to trail my fingers over her soft lips.

And goddess, I liked how she felt against .

I liked the feel of her... her sll... her warmth.

I loved the way her hair glead in the moonlight and the way she slept so peacefully, it felt as though the entire world had stilled at her feet.

"You’re so precious," I mumbled under my breath. "I wish I never fumbled you... that we never fumbled you; and now, I cannot help but think that you’re better off away from and my brothers."

Silence settled between us and I couldn’t hear a sound, save for the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears and the way the wind ruffled the trees all around us.

"Sleep, pretty," I said softly, my voice gentle, "I’d protect you."

I’d been so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t realize when she pried her eyes open, the beautiful purple orbs glinting under the moonlight as she stared pointedly at my face.

When I finally caught her staring, my heart stopped beating. I froze... and then smiled when I noticed the small smile playing on her lips.

"Hi." I whispered, suddenly feeling shy.

I wondered if she had heard . If she had listened to the words I’d said and if she was mad at . But one look at her face made think otherwise.

She sat up slowly, took in our serene environnt and with a stretch, asked; "Where are we?"

"I don’t know," I answered truthfully. "I was trying to flee from those people and I ended up driving all the way here. I’m sorry."

But she didn’t look mad. She didn’t look as irritated as she had been before.

Instead, she only nodded and whispered; "Thank you."

And those words... those words made my heart flutter in my chest. It made my wolf thrash around like a mad man.

What I’ll do to hear her say those words to again. What I would do to make her grateful...

A small smile spread across my face when I took in her beautiful beautiful face. And then I whispered that one sentence that was more important right now than my traitorous heart.

"Where do we sleep tonight?"

Leilani glanced around us quickly, taking in the quiet beach and the view of the midnight water. And then she slowly turned to and pointed to a small cave not so far from the shore. She drawled; "What about there?"

"No!"

"And there?" She asked, pointing to a worn down tent.

I shook my head quickly. "No."

Her eyes snagged on a parked bus and she squealed. "And that?"

"I frowned. "No. Let’s just sleep in your car."

It took her a mont for my words to finally settle and when it did, she placed her hands on her hips and turned to , her face a mixture of amusent and confusion as she muttered;

"My car is too small. Moreover, I overheard you talking about how beautiful I am while I slept. You did it like a creep, so I think it’ll be a lil bit creepy to share a cramped space with a man who..."

"Do you think I’d take advantage of you?" I asked, frowning, but I couldn’t help the smile making its way across my lips.

"I don’t," she spat. "But I think you’d try to get into my clothes." She finished, and I could only smile because truth be told... it wasn’t such a bad idea. I didn’t even know if she was being serious or joking.

All I knew was that I liked how I felt in the mont. I liked how she could make jokes like this... and I’d she would let into her clothes, then...

It was sothing I’d lay my life down for.

—and that’s if she would let .

’She wouldn’t.’ My wolf sneered and I sighed, instantly killing the thoughts.

Because deep down, I knew that it was true. She definitely wouldn’t.
