Leilani.
I stilled.
And bloody Hades, I could swear that I heard my heart drop into my guts in such a way that I heard a loud splash.
You know the kind of splash that happens when you drop a heavy rock into a pond?
Exactly that!
"Who’s the secret lover or admirer?" She pressed on, but for so reason, her words annoyed more than they made flustered.
I frowned deeply and turned to glare at the red roses, and as I did, I couldn’t help but rember Darius’ last words. I also couldn’t shake out how he’d proposed the whole crazy idea to like it was the most absolutely fucking splendid idea on the planet; and with a shrug, I spat; "take them away."
She froze. "Why?"
"Because Darius is so psychopath that I do not wish to waste this beautiful afternoon talking about." I hissed; and maybe it was the tone of my voice or maybe it was sothing else but I noticed how she dropped the flowers and turned to look at , her face a mirror of worry as she asked;
"Is sothing the matter?"
"Of course, sothing is always the matter but it’s all good, I promise you. I am fine!"
She seed not to buy my words as she reluctantly let the conversation go, but her hands still clutched onto mine as she asked; "And are you fine?"
"I am."
A mont of silence passed between us and just when I had begun to think that she had finally decided to let it go, she asked; "Is Darius the sa guy who used to send those bouquets of roses to your house?"
I stopped, pressed my lips together and eventually nodded. "Yes."
"Do you know who he is now?"
"He’s my cousin... or brother. Or whatever the fuck he is. But he’s family."
"Family?" She spat in confusion, her eyebrows ceasing together as she stared at like I had lost my mind. "Really?"
"Yes."
"So why the hell do you not want his flowers? What if he’s trying to make up for all the lost years together?"
Her cluelessness almost made want to laugh. And goddess, it was cute. However, I soon snapped her out of it when I chuckled lightly and spat;
"Because girl, I know that he isn’t trying to make up for anything. If anything, he made a stupid proposition."
"Which is?"
"He wants to marry him." I spat, and as soon as I did, Maya’s eyes bulged. Earlier, she’d been taking a sip from her bottled water but as soon as those words slipped out of my mouth, she spat out her water and began to cough violently before a hysterical laugh bubbled out of her mouth.
I frowned. "What’s so funny about it?"
"Because it sounds like so Targaryens kinda shit or sothing. Is he dented?" She snapped, and that there made laugh.
I laughed so hard that my tears filled the corners of my eyes and until I could feel my chest going tight due to how impossible it was becoming for to breathe properly.
When I finally managed to pull myself together, I shook my head and whispered; "I think so."
"I feel so," she announced, then shook her head before muttering sothing about how crazy the entire situation sounded under her breath.
I smiled. "See Maya, don’t even worry about it for real..." I muttered, "it’s nothing that I cannot handle. Moreover, it is such a long story, I don’t think I want to spend the rest of today talking about it."
She sighed as if in understanding and leaned away to gulp the rest of her water, and as I watched her now, I couldn’t help but notice that there was sothing bothering her...
Sothing that must’ve made her co here in the first place.
I picked up my iPad and after dumping it into my bag and rising from my chair, I asked; "Now, I should ask you... is sothing the matter?"
At that, she dropped the water bottle and lifted her eyes to et mine. And in that instant, I noticed the frustration swirling around her beautiful eyes... the tension... the confusion. She muttered; "I and Gavin have decided to hold an engagent party."
As soon as I heard that, my heart began to race. I held on tighter to my bag and asked; "When did you both agree to this?"
"Yesterday." She whispered,
Goddess, it was good news. It was splendid news in fact, so why the hell do I feel heavy in the chest? Why do I—
"So I have co to formally invite you to our party... and also to apologize on behalf of Gavin for the other day." She continued, interrupting my train of thoughts.
I thought about her words for a second and shook my head, seeing as it was sothing that didn’t sit right with , especially as she had no involvent with whatever was between Gavin and I in the first place. I nodded. "You know, it’s not in your place to apologize."
She pressed her lips together and dropped her gaze, her voice shaky as she continued; "I know, but I don’t want Gavin to be the bridge that cos between us. He’s my mate but you’re my best friend and lately, I cannot help but think that I am losing you the more I am with him."
"You’re not losing ." I drawled, but seeing as she didn’t buy it, I continued; "...you’ve never lost ."
"But you cannot deny the fact that I no longer know what’s happening in your life!"
"You know that’s a lie!" I argued but stopped when she waved her hands in front of my face.
She snapped; "Alpha Jarek has suddenly disappeared and no one knows where he is but you! And sohow, I don’t know!"
"That’s because he made promise not to tell anyone!"
"Then there’s this Darius guy...’’
"Who I don’t want to talk about as I’m already having a bad day!" I hissed, and at that, she stopped.
Her eyes brimd with tears that soon began to stream down her face. She muttered; "And that’s exactly it, Leilani. You used to talk to when you had bad days. I used to be the one you talked to when the world felt heavy. Now, I am the one you shun."
"It’s not like that, Maya." I seethed, shaking my head.
But she wouldn’t listen. She sighed.
"The engagent party is Saturday. Please co. And just so you know, your mates may be in attendance... and I’ll ensure that your na appears about twelve tis on the guest list to ensure that security doesn’t miss it." She explained and with that, she turned and walked away, leaving feeling like a piece of shit.
Or like the bad friend.
It took a mont for her words to finally settle in my mind and when it did, I froze as I soon realised sothing:
She and Gavin were getting engaged!
But that was not the case. The problem was the fact that my mates would be in attendance too, and goddess, I was not sure I was ready to et with them after everything...
And especially after what Darius had told about their involvent in my previous attack.
Suddenly, I no longer wanted to attend the party, but I knew that it would hurt Maya if I ever did that.
Fuck!
