Kael.

Leilani’s cries nearly tore down the entire house. And for so reason, my only response to it was pain.

I was not aroused that she was naked. Not curious or anxious especially since this was the first ti I was seeing her in such a state.

I was hurt. Completely. Utterly.

And I was afraid.

It felt like I was the one in pain... like I was the one whose body was burning up with a fever so intense it lted away ice cubes and nearly stead whenever the washcloth was placed against her skin.

From where I stood against the door, I watched my brothers attend to her. But I couldn’t. Not because I didn’t want to but because I couldn’t bring myself to move. Because I was afraid of touching her... of feeling her... of knowing the extent to which she was hurting.

And then, there was sothing else.

—The fact that I was the only one who could see that she was stuck in a state of mid-shift.

Maybe it was due to the fact that Caelum and Zevran were distracted by her presence, but they seed completely oblivious to the fact that her forelimbs had elongated visibly. Her legs had stretched a few inches longer than they usually were and her hair was glittering in a way that I would have found ethereal if she wasn’t in so much pain.

So when she struck Caelum in the face— his nose— I wasn’t so shocked. I wasn’t surprised either because I knew what it ant; That her wolf was closer to the surface. That it wouldn’t take long before she goes completely berserk or beast mode on us—

"Let’s mark her!" Zevran suddenly said, causing to freeze in place..

My eyes widened especially since Leilani’s flew open just then and she scread; "NO!"

And I cannot say that I know Leilani like the back of my palm. I cannot say that I can read her like a book. But as soon as she refused, I knew that it was better to let her be. To let it go. If it was talking to her, that’s exactly what I would’ve done.

But Zevran didn’t.

He pushed her. He tried to make her see reason with him, and that... that infuriated her even more than his outrageous but very smartly drawn conclusion to mark her and rid her of this pain.

I gritted my teeth together and squeezed my eyes shut, trembling when she threw her head back and cried out. But what I didn’t expect was what happened next.

What I didn’t expect was how she simply rough housed us— three full blooded Alphas without even raising a finger(or maybe she did raise a finger but not in the way that you may think.

I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t move. And that was not even an exaggeration.

My entire body felt like it was under a spell, like I had no power of my own to fight against the hold she had on ; and it felt like...

"Compulsion," I whispered under my breath, but the words couldn’t co out any louder.

I knew my brothers were in pain— I could feel it— but I was powerless to help them. Scratch that, I was even powerless to help myself.

Then there was darkness before the crash.

The very loud crash.

It was one thing to know what Leilani was and another thing to experience it first hand.

It was nerve wracking. Exhilarating yet scary. It made people’s bones turn to jelly and made n tremble with fear. It made your consciousness elude you, leaving you as nothing but a shell... an unthinking empty shell.

—And that was exactly how I felt until I fell face first on Leilani’s porch and my brothers ca next, tumbling over like sacks of potatoes.

A groan slipped out of my lips before I could help it, but before we could scramble to our feet and perhaps try to return to the house, the door shut right in our faces and she returned into the house so calmly that one wouldn’t even imagine that she had just perford a literal voodoo right in front of us.

"Did-d I just f-float?" Caelum’s shaky voice ca next, snapping out of my thoughts.

I turned briefly to look at him. But because I was also lost for words, I couldn’t speak. I simply shrugged.

"Did she just do that to us?" He continued nevertheless, unwilling to stop asking questions we all had no answers to.

I lifted my head one more ti to look at her door, at the house which was now unusually quiet and I couldn’t shake out the feeling of foreboding that imdiately ca over .

I began to make my way over until Zevran stopped , looping his arms around mine as he asked coldly; "Where do you think you’re going?"

"Back to her!" I snapped, forcefully prying my arm out of his hold.

I reached the door in a couple of strides, but do you know what? I couldn’t turn the handle.

It felt stiff. It was the stiffest thing I’ve ever felt in my entire life and it was so cold, if I didn’t know better, I would’ve thought it had just been brought out of ice. Mind you, winter is long gone and we are already in the middle of late spring.

Now back to the present, I stumbled away from the door, ignoring the strange looks from my brothers and asked; "You don’t feel it?"

"What?"

"What I feel?" I snapped quickly, "like she’s hurt. Like she is in pain.."

"I hate to break it to you, brother, but she’s been in pain for the past hour. So yes, I feel it." Caelum sassed, and I would’ve rolled my eyes if this wasn’t so dire.

"But this is different."

"It is definitely different," Caelum sighed. "She just lifted us a few feet into the air and tossed us out of her house like we were nothing. I am an Alpha. Not a human. And even if we were humans, that should be impossible for her to do." He spat quietly, causing my frown to deepen even more as I thought about it long and hard.

"How do we even explain this phenonon? It indeed has never been seen. It should not be a thing, hybrid or not, that a re girl had compelled three Alphas at once..." Kael began to say but I stopped him by butting in. My voice was detached as I said;

"Or it could..." I drawled, "if like that guy who claims he’s a distant family of hers, she’s also a Dark Knight."

Caelum and Zevran froze.

"That’s impossible."

"Nothing’s impossible with Leilani."
