Leilani.

Today was inexplicably cold, which was strange given the season and as I made my way into the large towing glass building of Frostclaw. Inc, I wrapped my coat tightly around my small body and pressed my phone to my ear.

"You’ve refused to co back ever since..." Gavin’s voice drifted through the phone’s speaker, soft as always and gentle in that way that always made it sound like he was afraid to annoy .

"You should co ho. We need to talk about it... about everything. I am worried about you, and you may not believe but mother is worried too."

I sighed, lowering my head as I walked through the cold white hallway leading to my office. And as I went, I couldn’t help but notice the strange stares the other colleagues threw at as I walked past, but deciding that it wasn’t worth it, I paid no attention to them.

"I cannot." I said quietly, "I cannot bring myself to return knowing fully well that there’s sothing at play there."

"There’s nothing at play," he argued, his voice rising a few notches and causing to successfully roll my eyes.

"Gavin, you’re supposed to be smarter than I am. I have always turned so, so it’s a bit underwhelming to think that you’ll say this. I know that there is sothing at play, and if you think there isn’t, then explain to what that sorry excuse of a will was!"

After I said those words, he sighed and I could almost imagine him turning away. "See Leilani, I have tried to talk to our mother about it and she doesn’t know anything either. She’s just as surprised as we both are and says that she’s been surprised from the mont father’s lawyer refused to read the will in your absence."

"Oh,"

"And I have thought this through and co to a conclusion..."

"Which is?"

"Did you ever stop to think that father was probably ashad of himself? Did you stop to think that this may be his own way of making it up to you after everything?"

After all the trauma...

As much as I wanted to believe that, I couldn’t. It was Malakai Blackthorne we were talking about here. The sa man who had hated from the very first breath I took, and who hated until his last.

I shook my head quickly before realising that he couldn’t see and then I shrugged; "No."

"Huh?"

"Malakai, your father, would never do that... and then leave Chalice who is the absolute love of his life with practically nothing. Whatever was willed to , I do not wish to take. Let them all be transferred to Chalice’s son who is now under your custody."

Gavin gasped. I could hear the way he took in a sharp breath. I could even swear that I heard the curse word that never left his lips. He snorted. "He’s still a baby!"

"And you’re his guardian."

"Lani—"

"What do you intend to na him?" I asked, interrupting him by changing the topic. "He needs a na. He deserves one."

"Lennox," Gavin answered, sounding sowhat annoyed.

I refused to let his emotions affect , nor be swayed by this lie they were all trying to feed to , so I nodded and smiled— one that didn’t quite reach my eye, as I said; "That’s a great na... but I have to go now."

"Stop," he sighed tiredly, "...we still have so things to talk about."

"I believe we do," I drawled, "...but I am at work, and whatever we have to say to each other can wait."

I was about to drop the phone when so thought suddenly hit and I sighed. "Also Gavin..."

"Huh?"

"Talk to your father’s lawyer. Not our mother. If anyone has the right information we need, then it’s him, not Maurice."

Gavin sounded like he had sothing else to say, but probably deciding against it, he made a sound in his throat akin to agreent and whispered; "I will do just that."

"Who the fuck have you been on the phone with for so long? I fucking need you!" Maya’s sharp voice suddenly ca from behind Gavin’s and I winced, already hating the lovey-doveyness that was sure to co next.

I vaguely heard Gavin curse under his breath, and then I suspect that he took the phone away from his ear because when next he spoke, he sounded quieter. He snapped; "It’s Leilani!"

"Oh, babe!"

"Tell her I am at work and that we will talk later!" I rushed out, and with that, I dropped the phone and continued on my rry way to my office.

I had however just arrived at my door and was about to pull it open when I heard footsteps rushing towards . I spun around quickly to find Yvette running over, her golden hair—freshly dyed— bouncing around her smooth face as she waved desperately at .

I frowned. "Yvette?"

"Madam!" She replied, panting heavily. I rolled my eyes.

"It’s Leilani... so why the hell are you..?"

"Running?" She supplied breathlessly and I nodded. "Alpha Jarek asked to send you to his office as soon as you co into the building today. He’s been aning to see you for over an hour now."

Sothing about the urgency in her voice made slightly antsy and I nodded. I made sure to pat her shoulder gently before turning away, my voice smooth despite my semi-panic as I said;

"Well, thank you!"

"You’re welco!" She greeted back, before disappearing in the sa manner she had co in.

And I should be worried, I know. I should be wondering what the fuck Jay wants to say to . But at that mont, none of those mattered. I only wondered why I was not as brave as she was.

—And how I could never bring myself to dye my hair even once, talk more of how often she did it, and with the craziest colours.

When I arrived at Jay’s office, the first thing I noticed was how he never raised his head to acknowledge . He seed focused on so docunts on his table, his eyes stretched into thin lines as he scrutinised them.

"Good morning, Jay," I greeted softly,

"Good morning, Ms Sinclair," he answered coldly.

And ladies and gentlen, that there was the second thing that had my eyes snapping open. I stared at him as if seeing him for the first ti, wondering what the hell must’ve possessed him into being so cold. So detached.

Goddess, even his chair was tilted in a way that made it impossible for him to directly look at my face even if he raised his head from the papers in front of him.

I feared that he was about to let off. That I had probably fucked up so bad these past few months that he’s decided I was no longer fit for this job. And just when I was about to voice that, he pushed a paper towards and drawled;

"That’s for you."

My heart fell. Like literally sank into the bottom of my stomach.

My hands trembled as I forced myself to pick the paper up, and with trembling fingers, I pried it open and began to read.

A new branch.

Move.

Ms Leilani Sinclair being the best candidate.

Effective imdiately.

Those words were the first things I picked from the entire gibberish in front of until my brain began to piece bits and pieces together.

My anger peaked when I realized what this was and I frowned.

He wasn’t sacking . He was transferring .

To Germany!
