Kael.

I knew I was mad. Downright pissed. But I couldn’t ascertain if I was mad at Leilani for pulling this stunt, that is stealing our investors; Or mad at her for kissing Frostclaw.

Right in front of everyone.

To , it looked like a claim. It seed as though she was finally giving the press sothing to talk about. But at the sa ti, warning my brothers and I to keep off.

This was her asking us to finalize the rejection process with imdiate effect.

But still, I couldn’t let go. I didn’t want to. I wasn’t even sure I could bring myself to do it, or force my wolf into enduring sothing that agonizing.

"Let’s get out of here!" Caelum spat from behind , but I didn’t move an inch. I couldn’t move. I felt glued into place.

I soon felt a shake before slender hands snaked themselves around my shoulders. Chalice’s face ca into view. She drawled; "Kael, are you okay?"

But I couldn’t respond. I an, what was I supposed to say to her? That I am fine? That everything’s just great after I’d just watched Leilani kiss and run off with so guy?

That I am doing okay even though I’m quite jealous?

"Kael, I don’t know what’s wrong with you but you’re scaring !" She snapped. "You three are scaring and I don’t like it!"

I turned to my brothers then to see their ashen faces and stoic expressions. Caelum spat; "Let’s leave."

"Yes, let’s go ho. I think this isn’t where I want to be anymore!"

Finally agreeing that we ought to leave, I grabbed Chalice’s arm only for her to shrug off so quickly that I stumbled forward. My eyes widened in shock and irritation. I growled; "Chalice!"

"Baby, we’re going ho now. You should co with us." Caelum butted in, draping his arm around her which she instantly shrugged off.

She pointed at the crowd, dropped her head ekly and muttered; "I’m not leaving."

"Why?" The three of us said in unison, causing a few people around to turn to us. We ignored them.

I drawled; "Why do you not want to leave? We want to... so you ought to co with us."

"I want to stay back and socialize." She said softly. "After I lost my chance to work at Frostclaw, I’ve been trying to get into other prominent companies and look at that..." she whispered, pointing to the crowd filled with elites all over the country, "...most of the CEOs of prominent companies are here. This is my chance to try a different approach."

Silence settled between us as soon as she said that, and then after a mont, I finally sighed whilst rubbing my face as if to take out the creases along my skin. I said; "it’s fine then. We’ll stay behind."

"No." Chalice replied so fast, my head nearly spun. If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve feared she was trying to get rid of us. She mumbled; "No. No, don’t worry about . I can take care of myself just fine. Moreover, this way, I can socialise without people thinking I only made it this far because of my affiliation with you guys."

Now, that made sense.

I turned to Zevran and Caelum, expecting them to chirp in, and while Caelum seed reassured, Zevran said nothing. He simply nodded once and then turned away from us to begin walking out of the hall.

And goddess, I was stunned. Even Chalice’s face fell.

"I believe he doesn’t like , that one." She said softly, dropping her gaze.

Caelum was quick to try to reassure her. He draped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close, his lips brushing against her temple as he drawled; "He doesn’t hate you. He’s just... well, Zevran."

I nodded. "He’s basically like that with everybody."

"Really?" She asked hopefully, and while it hurt to lie to her, I couldn’t help but beam a smile at her.

"Yes," I answered with so much conviction, you’d think I was trying to convince myself. "You should be used to him by now."

"You should!" Caelum added like the con artist that he was. "Now, you shouldn’t worry about us or about him... so focus solely on getting what you desire. We’ll go now. And don’t forget to let us know if you need anything."

"I won’t forget." She muttered with a smile.

And after kissing us both fondly on the lips, she turned and left, disappearing into the crowd while leaving us to stare after her like kids that’d been abandoned on Christmas Eve.

However, that night, she didn’t call us for ’help’ or whatever. She didn’t even reach out. And to worsen matters, she didn’t co ho.

She even stopped picking our calls at so point.

And when our calls beca more frequent, the phone "for so reason" went off. It was strange.

By the next morning, we learned that she had spent the night at her father’s house, and while that should be reassuring for us, it wasn’t. If anything, it only spiked my curiosity.

By mid day, we learned she had developed a sudden fever, and by the beginning of the evening, she was being rushed to the ergency unit at the hospital because she’d suddenly started bleeding heavily. She was also vomiting incessantly and could no longer stand by herself.

Panic clawed at my veins at the news, and with shaky hands, I drove my brothers to the hospital.

Upon arrival, we found her sprawled on the bed, still bleeding, still in serious pain... and now, her skin was so pale, she appeared ghostly.

My heart shattered in my chest. My eyes burned.

Goddess, I couldn’t bear the sight. I couldn’t stand to see her so weak... in so much pain... in so much misery.

I instinctively wrapped my hands around her hands, clutching at it as if I didn’t want to let go— which I didn’t.

The entire place was in chaos. While her brother and father stood to the side with red rimd eyes, staring into space, her mother was wailing. My brothers, on the other hand, pranced around the room restlessly...that is until the doctor arrived. He was a young doctor with the na Sebastian, but from his records, he did quite a very good job around here.

When he stepped into the room, the entire place went quiet. He sighed, shook his head and whispered; "She’s hemorrhaging. Did she give birth recently or have a miscarriage?" He asked, and at that, we all turned to stare at each other.

"Yes!"

"Yes, what?"

"She had a miscarriage!" Gavin snapped, looking impatient.

"Oh that’s why..." he mused under his breath, and then lifting his head from his—what the fuck is that large folder used to docunt a patient’s dical records called?— and turned to us. "She’s suffering from GTD."

"Huh?" This ti, it was her mother who asked— or hiccuped, and I too nodded because I had no idea what the fuck that is.

Sebastian sighed. "It is called Gestational Trophoblastic Disease... and it is caused because a tissue from her failed pregnancy has developed into abnormal growths."

"Abnormal growths?" Caelum asked worriedly, "...isn’t that like cancer or sothing?"

"It hasn’t developed into cancer yet, but at this point, it is still very bad and she needs urgent dical treatnt."

My heart plumted. Even my limbs felt like they could no longer hold up anymore. Deciding that I needed air, I stepped out of the room, but not before hearing Caelum scream to Gavin.

"You know, this is Leilani’s fault right? Chalice would’ve never lost that pregnancy if it wasn’t for her nasty sches!"

And while that was the last thing I intended to hear right now, it was also true.

Leilani was the root of all these problems, and I think it’s high ti we set her free.

I think it’s ti we let go of her, reject her like she wants and see if that would stop her from targeting Chalice.

’Let’s see how you’ll do that!’ My wolf, Zephyr, snorted in my head but I quickly shut him off and turned off the mind link, knowing fully well that nothing that bitch Leilani ever does will make him hate her.

And I hated him for it.
