Chapter 1553: Chapter 1553: She Knew, It Was Blood

After a while, a soft “yah-yah” sound echoed again, indistinct and unclear.

The little one couldn’t say a single word, but even so, Ann listened intently, her face full of contentnt and happiness.

“Miss Nolan, Little Candy didn’t cry today. She’s been so good.”

“Yara, Mommy will be ho tomorrow to see you. Do you miss Mommy?” Ann clutched the phone, her eyes brimming with a mother’s tender smile.

The little one didn’t respond, but Ann continued to speak to her gently, “Mommy ca to see your father today. I wonder if you’ll ever resent Mommy for bringing you into this world but not being able to give you a father’s love. But Mommy loves you very much; you must stay with Mommy, always stay by my side and never leave.”

Never leave.

She couldn’t bear losing anyone else.

Orphaned since childhood, Zaiden Santos had left too.

Her grandfather was becoming old, but at least Little Candy was still with her.

On the other end, the little one naturally couldn’t understand what Ann was saying, yet when she heard Ann’s voice, she laughed.

Ann was deeply grateful to Evan Guerrero—grateful he stopped her just in ti when she was about to go through with the abortion.

Without Evan, there wouldn’t be Little Candy, born healthy and safe.

The gifts from that man, she had never accepted them. The one dress she wore once, and never again.

But Little Candy was his final gift to her—the best gift of all—and this, she accepted.

Her gaze rested on the gravestone outside the window, her eyes filled with deep tranquility, vast like the sky—serene and calm.

“Little Candy, he is your father,” Ann said softly.

On the other end, the little one smacked her lips, her tiny hands waving to and fro.

“Mommy will co ho now.”

By the grave, Harper Glorian was still standing, seemingly talking to Zaiden Santos.

Ann didn’t want to interfere anymore; she needed to return to Old York.

When you’re alive, you have to keep looking forward.

Ending the call, she took one last look at the cetery.

The sunlight was radiant, brilliantly illuminating everything.

“Zaiden, I’m leaving. I won’t co back here again,” Ann murmured softly, her lips curving faintly. She knew he didn’t wish to see her. “I’ll take good care of Little Candy.”

At last, she withdrew her gaze and started the car.

The black vehicle beca a re dot, gradually descending the mountain, leaving the graveyard behind.

Everything here remained as peaceful as ever, undisturbed.

Her heart felt hollow; the mories she had in this city once again carried a heavy stroke of ink.

Ann frowned in exhaustion.

After rushing over last night and standing through until dawn, her head ached.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Zaiden Santos’ face kept appearing before her eyes from ti to ti.

After driving for a while, Ann realized she couldn’t continue—at this rate, sothing was bound to go wrong.

She parked the car by the roadside, slumped over the steering wheel in silence.

The graveyard was already far behind, yet her heart continued to race wildly.

A tallic taste welled up in her throat, rising wave after wave.

She knew—it was blood.

Steadying herself for a few minutes and composing her emotions, she called Zachary Santos.

“Ann! Where are you?” Zachary answered almost imdiately, his voice uncharacteristically anxious.

“I’m in Landon. I’m fine,” Ann repressed her emotions. “I’ve sent Zaiden on his final journey.”

Zachary was already ntally prepared; he had almost expected this answer.

He nodded. “Have you said your goodbyes?”

“Mm.”

“Are you okay emotionally? If you need to cry, just cry. Or co back to Old York—I’m still here.”

“I’m fine. I’m not as fragile as you think.”
