"Thank for what? We’re all family." Butler Santana treated Jasmine Yale as if she were his own daughter.
"Who are you talking to on the phone?"
Suddenly, the office door was pushed open.
A tall and somber figure stood at the doorway, blocking half of the light from the doorfra, with the quiet, dim corridor behind him.
Jasmine Yale quickly hung up the phone.
Butler Santana was still unaware of Sylvan Cheney’s situation.
She took off her headset and sat upright, properly.
Sylvan Cheney glanced at her coldly: "I brought you here to work, not to chat on the phone! How many tis have I warned you not to waste ti with irrelevant talk in formal settings!"
"CEO Cheney, today is my legal day off."
If anyone was being unreasonable, he was more so.
"So what? Hmm?" Sylvan Cheney stood at the door, still wearing his black shirt from the night, unchanged.
His face carried traces of alcohol, as if he had drunk quite a bit.
Sylvan Cheney’s gaze was fixed on her, authoritative, sharp, and distant.
Jasmine Yale parted her lips but dared not retort.
She knew the consequences of arguing.
"Nothing." She lowered her head, avoiding his gaze, with warm tears welling up in her eyes.
She had been absorbed in the joy of her baby being able to move, and he poured cold water on her happiness.
She lowered her head to flip through the docunts.
For a mont, neither spoke, and only the faint rustling of turning pages filled the air.
It seed the chirping of sumr insects in the grass could also be heard.
"How long until it’s done?"
"Before dawn, I’ll send it to your email promptly."
"Too inefficient!"
"CEO Cheney, what if I hadn’t happened to answer your call tonight? Wouldn’t this work have been given to ?" Jasmine Yale thought for a mont but replied calmly.
"If you’re incapable, don’t do it, leave now, no one will stop you."
"I’ll get it done."
Jasmine Yale knew arguing led to bad outcos.
She started to tap on the keyboard, organizing clearly and listing all the details.
She didn’t expect Sylvan Cheney to remain standing at the doorway, not leaving.
After a long pause, he finally spoke: "Go to the finance departnt on Monday to collect your bonus."
Jasmine Yale’s hand paused for a mont, then she chuckled awkwardly: "On one hand, I work for money; on the other, to improve myself. I promised soone once; I said I would work harder, be more ambitious, not make him worry."
In the light, the office was silent.
Out of the corner of her eye, she glanced at Sylvan Cheney, his tall figure still standing in the doorway, but his brows were deeply furrowed, his eyes dark.
"Huh." He sneered, "Would you do it without pay?"
Jasmine Yale’s shoulders trembled slightly.
Her heated gaze shifted to his face; he appeared slightly intoxicated, but his eyes were sharp.
She spoke, voice quivering, "What do you an?"
"No aning. Recently, I had soone investigate at the University of Cakago; your reputation is very poor, even terrible. In our group, talent is one aspect, but character is more important. I won’t fire you for so bad reputation, but take care of yourself in the future. I’ll remind you now, privately, not to bring societal sches into the company’s interpersonal relationships."
Sylvan Cheney spoke relatively tactfully.
But Jasmine Yale understood.
Her body involuntarily trembled violently again.
