Chapter 1348: 1347, don’t lie to

“Accident?”

Li En’s gaze was full of sarcasm and cold intensity. “Bai Yiyi, then you tell —tell you don’t like Gu Kai and that you’ll never have anything to do with him again.”

At this point, his voice paused slightly. “I’ll grant you this courtesy. I’ll tell them what they want to know.”

Bai Yiyi’s face changed, her eyes flickered, and she avoided his cold, sharp gaze.

Li En stared at her with piercing eyes, studying the subtle changes in her expression. Suddenly, he laughed. “Bai Yiyi, stop lying to .”

“Elder Brother Li, what good does this do?” Bai Yiyi suddenly snapped, her tone irritated. “Do you truly want to live a life with no freedom, forever?”

“I am destined to be shackled, to forever dwell in darkness. From the mont I t you, from the mont I fell for you, my fate was sealed.”

Li En’s extremism made Bai Yiyi want to scream.

She took deep breaths, forcing herself to calm down. She had co here today to persuade Li En to reveal what he knew.

“I’m sorry. If I caused you to end up like this, I apologize. From beginning to end, I’ve always thought of you as an older brother. I didn’t know you held such feelings for .”

Bai Yiyi lowered her gaze, her eyes settling on the table’s surface. Her voice was gentle, sincere, and filled with regret.

If she had known back then about Li En’s feelings, she would have distanced herself from him early on, avoided excessive interaction, and ensured he wouldn’t sink so deeply.

“Yiyi, you don’t need to apologize.” Hearing her apology, the sarcasm and sharpness in Li En’s eyes instantly dissipated, ebbing away like the tide.

Bai Yiyi lifted her eyes to et his gaze, pressed her lips together, and softly said, “My mom is traveling abroad. She saw the news and said she wanted to co back to see you. I told her not to co back, so I ca today—to keep my promise to her—and let you talk to her.”

“Is Mrs. Bai enjoying herself on her trip?”

At the ntion of Bai Yuqin, Li En’s deanor softened noticeably. It was evident that he truly respected Bai Yuqin as an elder.

Bai Yiyi nodded. “She should be happy. I can tell from her voice. In all these years, I’ve never seen her as happy as she was during this trip, so I didn’t want her to co back.”

“It’s better she doesn’t return. I don’t want her to see like this.”

Li En laughed at himself bitterly. Seeing his current state—neither fully human nor ghost—was sothing he didn’t want anyone, not even Bai Yiyi, to witness.

And so, whenever he faced her, his emotions were unpredictable.

“Then I’ll call her now, so you can say a few words. She’s still worried about you. Earlier, I asked Lu Zhiyan, and he agreed.”

Bai Yiyi held Lu Zhiyan’s phone in her hand. Li En’s eyes briefly flickered with understanding. He looked at the subtle warmth in Bai Yiyi’s expression and, for a fleeting mont, felt entranced.

He didn’t stop her.

Bai Yiyi dialed her mother’s number using Lu Zhiyan’s phone. Li En made no sound, simply watching her quietly.

In the interrogation room, a stillness lingered briefly.

The call connected. Bai Yuqin’s voice, accompanied by faint background noise—likely coming from a temple—traveled over the line. “Hello!”

“Mom, it’s , Yiyi.”

Bai Yiyi’s soft voice broke the silence. She glanced at Li En, who was sitting across the table, and activated the phone’s speaker. “Elder Brother Li is here. You can talk to him.”

With that, Bai Yiyi laid the phone on the table.

Li En didn’t look at the phone. His gaze remained fixed on her.

The speakerphone carried Bai Yuqin’s voice into the small interrogation room, mingled faintly with the background chatter. Her words were clear: “Little Li.”

A fleeting emotion crossed Li En’s otherwise indifferent face. “Auntie, I’m here.”

“Little Li, I saw the news. How could you be so foolish again? Didn’t you promise Auntie you’d work hard to reform yourself while inside?”

Bai Yuqin’s voice carried a hint of heartbreak.

Li En’s expression shifted subtly again. He lowered his head, staring at the phone Bai Yiyi had placed on the table. “Auntie, I’ve let you down.”

“Little Li, since you still call Auntie, you should listen to one more ti—don’t continue making mistakes. You must take responsibility for the wrongs you’ve committed.”

“I no longer have the chance to correct them, Auntie. If there’s a next life, I will listen to you, I promise.” A flash of regret flickered in Li En’s eyes.

If there’s a next life…

He turned his gaze to Bai Yiyi before him. In the depths of his heart, he wished he’d never t her. If their eting only led to his tornt, he’d rather they never crossed paths.

“Little Li, don’t speak nonsense! You still have a chance. I’ve already booked a ticket and will co back tomorrow to see you.”

“Auntie, please don’t return. Yiyi told you’re enjoying yourself while away, and I hope you stay happy. Don’t co back because of —it will make feel guilty.”

“If you truly want Auntie to be happy, then stop making mistakes—tell the police everything you know so they can apprehend the true culprits. Stop foolishly letting people manipulate you.”

Li En suddenly lifted his gaze toward Bai Yiyi.

His eyes were sharp.

Bai Yiyi stiffened montarily. She could tell that Li En was angry again.

She pressed her lips together firmly, eting his blade-like gaze with calm determination. Suddenly, Li En chuckled—a laugh laced with scorn. “Auntie, I’ll tell them. You don’t need to co back; stay out there and enjoy yourself.”

Bai Yuqin couldn’t see Li En’s expression. However, Bai Yiyi noticed the hatred burning in his eyes, even as his words remained gentle and calm. An unexpected chill crept through her heart.

This man’s expression and his words—they didn’t belong to the sa person.

Fang Zhiwei didn’t go ho. Instead, she went to the police station, determined to verify the truth with Lu Zhiyan about what had happened that night—determined to find out who was telling the truth.

At the entrance, she happened to encounter a young police officer, who happened to be her student’s older brother. He greeted her warmly.

When she ntioned she was looking for Lu Zhiyan, he inford her, “Officer Lu went to the prison.”

“He went to the prison? When do you think he’ll be back?” Fang Zhiwei asked softly, frowning slightly.

The young officer scratched his head and replied uncertainly, “I’m not sure. Officer Lu received a call from Wen Jin while assigning our tasks—apparently, Bai Yiyi is eting Li En—and headed straight over.”

“Yiyi went to et Li En?” Fang Zhiwei’s eyes flickered montarily, and then a faint smile appeared. “Could you give Officer Lu’s phone number? I’ll call him directly.”

“Sure.”

He gave her the number, and Fang Zhiwei didn’t linger any longer, driving directly to Kangning Hospital.

When she arrived, she got out of her car, having first gone from her school to the police station, then to Kangning Hospital, stopping at a mall to buy fruits along the way—these were ant for visiting her classmate’s father.

At the door to the hospital room, Fang Zhiwei coincidentally ran into Gu Kai as he stepped out of the room.

When he saw her, a trace of surprise flickered in Gu Kai’s eyes. Fang Zhiwei greeted him with a smile, “Ah Kai, I was planning to visit your office later, but I didn’t expect to bump into you here.”
