Chapter 1370: 1369 bastard

In the following days, Tongtong called her mother every day, but Bai Yiyi’s phone remained off.

It felt like she was pulling a “disappear for ten days” just like Gu Kai.

Gu Kai didn’t stop Tongtong from sending voice ssages to Bai Yiyi every day. When he had isolated himself in the seaside villa previously, his heart had been full of resentnt toward Bai Yiyi, without a trace of longing.

But now, facing Tongtong day after day, listening to her say she missed her mother, looking at Tongtong’s little face that bore so resemblance to Bai Yiyi’s, and recalling the words of Bai Yuqin—that Bai Yiyi loved him—

A growing, unbidden yearning for Bai Yiyi began sprouting quietly in the depths of his heart.

That day, Gu Kai was supposed to be on leave to spend the weekend with Tongtong, but he received an unexpected call from the hospital asking him to return, so he brought Tongtong along with him.

As soon as they entered the hospital lobby, they ran into Fang Zhiwei coming out of the hospital.

“Ah Kai, aren’t you off today? Why are you back at the hospital?”

Tongtong ran ahead, with Gu Kai following behind. Fang Zhiwei noticed Tongtong first, her eyes flashing with surprise. When her gaze t Gu Kai’s, the surprise on her face shifted into a gentle smile.

Gu Kai’s lips curved into a faint smile. “A patient’s family mber had so questions, so I ca.”

“Why did you bring Tongtong along?”

Fang Zhiwei’s eyes lingered on Tongtong, who had stopped and was now focused on watching the pharmacy. She asked softly.

Gu Kai’s eyes flickered. “These past few days, Tongtong has been with .”

“Is Yiyi on a business trip?” Fang Zhiwei asked curiously.

When she noticed a brief unnatural expression flash across Gu Kai’s handso face, as if he didn’t want to discuss the matter, she quickly changed the subject. “You’ve got sothing to do, right? How about I play with Tongtong for a while? Tongtong, co on, let’s go to the cake shop across the street. Auntie will treat you to a cake, okay?”

“No, Tongtong wants to be a doctor.”

Tongtong shook her little head. She ca to the hospital to learn how to be a doctor from her dad.

Fang Zhiwei felt a little awkward at being rejected.

Looking at Tongtong’s serious little face, Gu Kai smiled and said, “Tongtong is different from other kids. She likes hospitals the most. Zhiwei, you should go take care of your errands.”

“Alright, then.”

Fang Zhiwei smiled and was about to leave when a voice suddenly called out from behind, playful and teasing with a hint of amusent. “Teacher Fang, didn’t you just say you weren’t waiting for Doctor Gu? Looks like I’ve caught you red-handed!”

Gu Kai turned his head to glance at Wei Jingshan, his long, narrow eyes filled with a trace of disdain. Fang Zhiwei caught the look of distaste he directed at Wei Jingshan, and her smile faded as she said blandly, “Student Wei, you might speak carelessly, but words should not be thrown around carelessly. I ca to see Uncle Chen, and it was just by chance that I ran into Ah Kai as I was leaving.”

“Oh, so it was my misunderstanding. Teacher Fang, don’t be upset. I just think you and Doctor Gu are such a well-matched pair, and it’s such a sha you broke up.”

Wei Jingshan wore an expression of pretend regret for Fang Zhiwei.

“Do you have too much free ti, or has your instructor given you no work to do? This is a hospital, not a gossip spot. If you want to gossip, take off your white coat and get out of Kangning Hospital.”

Gu Kai’s icy voice cut Fang Zhiwei off mid-sentence. Although there weren’t many people in the lobby, there were still around a dozen nurses, patients, and family mbers present.

He didn’t bother to lower his voice. Those cold, sharp words pierced through the background noise like a knife, landing loud and clear in everyone’s ears. In an instant, all eyes turned toward them.

Wei Jingshan’s face turned pale in an instant.

Fang Zhiwei hadn’t expected Gu Kai to openly embarrass Wei Jingshan in such a public setting, and she was montarily startled.

She lowered her gaze, masking the brief flicker of emotion in her eyes.

“Doctor Gu, I was just saying it casually. I’m sorry.”

Under the scrutiny of the crowd, Wei Jingshan’s every nerve felt like it was being pricked. She bit her lip tightly and apologized with evident grievance.

Gu Kai snorted coldly, refusing to give her any face. “You might just be an intern here, but this is Kangning Hospital. If you think you can make it through your internship by acting this way, you’re sorely mistaken.”

Wei Jingshan’s face, already pale, drained of every last hint of color.

Gu Kai’s words were essentially telling her that Kangning Hospital would never keep her. Even if soone pulled strings for her, the best she could hope for was to finish the internship period.

“Daddy.”

Tongtong’s innocent voice broke the tense atmosphere. Fang Zhiwei forced a smile and quickly said, “Ah Kai, go handle your work. I’ll head ho first.”

“Hmm.” Gu Kai nodded, bending down to pick up Tongtong before striding toward the elevator.

In the lobby, Wei Jingshan, humiliated, was both furious and resentful. Her hands, hanging by her sides, clenched into tight fists.

She had hoped to stir up trouble between Fang Zhiwei and Gu Kai, thinking that the more Fang Zhiwei clung to Gu Kai, the more she would resent Bai Yiyi.

But she hadn’t expected Gu Kai to humiliate her in front of everyone.

The more Gu Kai despised her and tried to drive her away, the more determined she beca to stay. She silently vowed that one day, she would make Gu Kai ask her to stay, and she would beco the young lady of the Gu Family and the mistress of Kangning Hospital.

Where Wei Jingshan mustered such confidence was anyone’s guess. She thought that being a top graduate from a dical school and having so connections with Mayor Chen would be enough to climb her way into the century-old Gu Family.

In any case, her shalessness had reached brand new heights.

She was dreaming a lofty dream of becoming soone extraordinary.

Far away, in a small town thousands of miles away.

Bai Yiyi stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling window, gazing toward the horizon. The glow of the setting sun stread in, casting its light on her delicate, pale face. The longing etched into her eyebrows and eyes grew even more pronounced.

Tongtong’s voice floated from the phone in her hand, “Mommy, Tongtong misses you.”

“Mommy, ti to eat.”

“Mommy, Tongtong is going to sleep.”

“Mommy, co back soon.”

Those tender, soft, childish words struck her heart, and a pang of pain spread through her chest. Her grip on the phone tightened bit by bit, to the point that her fingers ached, yet it did nothing to alleviate the ache in her heart.

Following Tongtong’s voice ca Gu Kai’s, low and steady, devoid of any trace of resentnt. “Yiyi, co back. Tongtong misses you every day.”

The scenery before her eyes suddenly blurred. She bit her lip tightly, and the pain in her heart intensified in an instant.

She didn’t know why, but when she heard Gu Kai’s voice, she felt a swell of grievance, coupled with anger—pure, seething anger.

He could vanish for ten days without a trace, so why couldn’t she?

“Yiyi, we need to have a proper conversation. It’s been a week; you must have cald down by now. For Tongtong’s sake, even if we end up as strangers in the future, there’s no need for you to run away so far.”

“If you don’t co back, I’ll really find a stepmother for Tongtong. I’ll make sure she forgets about you.”

Bai Yiyi’s tears spilled over as she clenched her lips tightly, cursing in her heart: Gu Kai, you bastard, how dare you threaten to make Tongtong forget about !
