Gu Kai had kept his eyes closed the entire ti, not once sparing a glance at Bai Yiyi on the bed.

He rely rested with his eyes shut, as faint rustling sounds entered his ears.

It was the sound of Bai Yiyi pulling a towel from underneath the blanket and changing into her pajamas. Raising his hand, Gu Kai massaged his temples absentmindedly with his long fingers.

About two minutes later, Bai Yiyi got off the bed, walked barefoot to the sofa, and sat down. After a mont of silence, she asked softly, “Have you had dinner yet?”

Gu Kai slowly opened his eyes, his gaze, illuminated by the light, deep and unfathomable. When their eyes t, Bai Yiyi’s heart skipped a beat, a faint tremor rippling through her chest.

She pressed her lips together, locking eyes with him for a few seconds before finally succumbing to Gu Kai’s overwhelming presence. She lowered her gaze, evading his eyes.

“No, I haven’t.”

Hearing Gu Kai’s response, Bai Yiyi silently cursed herself.

She tugged at the corners of her mouth awkwardly. “Do you want to eat sothing?”

“Make a bowl of noodles.” Gu Kai displayed no intention of treating her as an outsider, speaking without a hint of politeness.

After finishing his sentence, he stood up and walked toward the door. Bai Yiyi’s face shifted slightly, wanting to take back her offer, but it seed too late.

The more strained and awkward their relationship beca, the less she could respond with her usual anger or refusals. Closing her eyes briefly, she stood up and followed Gu Kai out of the room and downstairs.

After Gu Kai sat on the sofa in the living room, Bai Yiyi headed into the kitchen to cook noodles for him.

Knowing his love for at, she specially sliced so and prepared a bowl of shredded pork noodles.

Realizing that he hadn’t eaten all evening, she made an extra-large serving.

“Bring another bowl.” Seeing the overflowing bowl of noodles, Gu Kai instinctively furrowed his brows and gently instructed Bai Yiyi.

Bai Yiyi instinctively turned him down without thinking: “I’m not eating. You haven’t eaten all evening, so you must be hungry. Though the portion looks large, the soup takes up most of it. There aren’t actually that many noodles.”

Gu Kai stared at the at in the bowl, a satisfied smile curving his lips. “You’ve beco quite generous, haven’t you? So much at.”

“That at was bought with your money, not mine… Just eat already.”

Bai Yiyi reflexively retorted, but after uttering just one sentence, she recalled their current relationship and abruptly stopped, shutting down the topic with a chill.

Gu Kai’s gaze darkened, but he didn’t continue the conversation. Instead, he lowered his head and focused on eating the noodles.

In truth, he had already eaten dinner and wasn’t particularly hungry.

When she had asked earlier if he had eaten, he had lied—without knowing why, he just couldn’t suppress the desire to spend more ti with Bai Yiyi.

After a few bites of noodles, he lifted his head and caught Bai Yiyi looking at him. Her gaze rested on him, though it was clear her thoughts had drifted elsewhere.

“The post from this afternoon has been traced. It was made by soone hired by the housekeeper at Fang Zhiwei’s ho.”

Gu Kai’s deep voice pulled Bai Yiyi’s wandering mind back to reality. She blinked in confusion, her expression shifting slightly.

“Fang Zhiwei told herself,” Gu Kai added. Even if she hadn’t disclosed it, they still would have found out—after all, the person who posted it was a sowhat well-known blogger.

“Didn’t Fang Zhiwei bla you for Professor Fang’s death? Why would she still tell you it was her housekeeper who caused trouble?”

Bai Yiyi asked, puzzled.

Gu Kai let out a chuckle, his tone indifferent. “She didn’t want to take the bla herself, so she confessed. By the way, I overheard Ranran ntioning that you wanted to attend her father’s funeral?”

“That was just a fleeting thought. Honestly, you’d be more suitable to go,” Bai Yiyi said lightly, pursing her lips.

Gu Kai’s expression imdiately tightened, a streak of displeasure creasing his brow, his voice now heavier than before. “Fang Zhiwei and I ended things long ago. No matter what happens between you and , there will never be anything between her and .”

“…”

Bai Yiyi felt her face freeze in embarrassnt.

She didn’t understand why Gu Kai had suddenly grown angered—and even if she did, she didn’t want to admit it.

She pressed her lips together, lowering her head to stare at the wooden patterns on the coffee table. Her voice ca out stiff: “There are plenty of won who like you. You’ll certainly find soone more suited to you.”

“That’s none of your concern.”

Suddenly, Gu Kai lost his appetite for the noodles. He set down his chopsticks and stood up to leave.

A flicker of emotion flitted through Bai Yiyi’s eyes as she watched Gu Kai’s retreating figure. Her hands, resting on her legs, unconsciously gripped the fabric of her pajama pants tightly.

The sound of the door slamming echoed in her ears!

Lingering in the air was the faint, unique scent of antiseptic from his body. Subtle but persistent, it drifted into her nostrils, carried through her breaths into her lungs.

But the man was already gone.

Bai Yiyi did not attend Professor Fang’s funeral.

Wen Ran went. Wen Jin went as well. Gu Kai was busy with surgery, so Gu Yan attended in his place.

On the day of Professor Fang’s passing, Fang Zhiwei had been distraught and emotional. A few days later, however, she appeared calm at the funeral—quiet, composed, and rational throughout.

When the ceremony ended, the crowd gradually dispersed.

Wen Ran comforted Fang Zhiwei briefly before Wen Jin walked over. “Ranran, let’s go. Ride in my car.”

“Where’s Dad?”

Wen Ran asked in confusion.

“Dad received a call and left earlier,” Wen Jin explained gently. Hearing this, Wen Ran nodded. “Alright, I’ll drop by the workshop to check on Xiaocha and Yiyi.”

“Okay.”

Wen Jin smiled, exchanged so parting words with Fang Zhiwei, and then left with Wen Ran.

Kangning Hospital

Qian Songnan’s wife cornered Wei Jingshan in the stairwell.

“Miss Wei, didn’t you say you could get my husband Old Qian released? It’s been so many days now—why hasn’t there been any progress?”

Wei Jingshan glanced at the woman before her, impatience flashing across her face. “Qian Songnan isn’t just involved in embezzlent; there are plenty of other issues. It’s not so easy to get him released. I’m working on it—don’t rush .”

Madam Qian frowned, her anxiety bubbling over. “Miss Wei, you promised my husband. He’s being interrogated daily now, and if this keeps up, I’m afraid he won’t hold out and might say things he shouldn’t. When that happens…”

“Are you threatening ?”

Wei Jingshan’s expression instantly darkened with fury.

“I wouldn’t dare threaten Miss Wei. However, my Old Qian has already told everything. For his sake, I’ve kept my silence. But if Old Qian doesn’t get out in the end, the truth about how you played Fang Zhiwei and Bai Yiyi against each other won’t stay hidden forever.”

“You’re spouting nonsense! I’ve done nothing of the sort!” Wei Jingshan vehently denied, visibly angered.

Madam Qian let out a cold laugh. “Whether or not you did, you know in your heart. I have a recording of your conversation with my Old Qian. You wished to ruin Bai Yiyi’s reputation. Just because others don’t know doesn’t an I don’t. Twice now, it was you, Wei Jingshan, who sent anonymous parcels to Fang Zhiwei.”

“You’re talking nonsense.”

“Whether it’s nonsense or not, others will judge. If Miss Wei isn’t worried, I’ll march straight to Director Gu with this recording.”

With that, Madam Qian pretended to head toward Gu Yan’s office.

Wei Jingshan’s expression shifted several tis. Watching Madam Qian ascend a few steps, she quickly moved to grab her arm. “Wait a mont.”
