Even if Phoebe Walker were a fool, she would have understood the aning behind Belinda Swan’s words.
"If you’re here to trouble because of those news reports, then don’t bother."
Belinda Swan was Maxwell Peary’s fiancée, so a little jealousy was understandable. After all, Phoebe wasn’t formally involved with Maxwell Peary yet, and their relationship hadn’t been made public. Now that soone else had beaten her to the punch, Belinda must have felt a surge of resentnt.
Belinda Swan sneered, shooting Phoebe Walker a disdainful look. "Just a news report. Do you think I care?"
Her ultimate goal was Maxwell Peary, to beco Mrs. Peary, not to get bogged down in these minor details.
"Then what exactly do you want?"
Her father was lying in a hospital bed; she couldn’t bear to lose him. She knew better than anyone that if Liam Walker died like this, her future would be anything but easy. Belinda Swan’s family background was formidable, a true match for Maxwell Peary. Phoebe knew she absolutely could not afford to offend her right now.
"Go back to MC Group, continue your work, and act as if this never happened."
Upon hearing this, Phoebe Walker instantly clenched her fists. Maxwell Peary had put her father in the hospital. He still hadn’t woken up, and she was supposed to act as if nothing had happened and go back to work at MC Group?
"Impossible," Phoebe Walker refused imdiately.
Seeing Phoebe’s utterly inflexible stance, Belinda Swan’s expression changed instantly. "Hmph, I’ve said my piece. Whether you go or not is your decision."
After saying that, Belinda Swan turned and left.
So this was the model of a high-society lady everyone talked about. To think Belinda Swan was actually like this—an iron fist in a velvet glove, a dagger hidden behind a smile.
What Phoebe Walker would ultimately choose was almost predictable.
「That afternoon, she reappeared at MC Group.」
Previously, because Liam Walker had gotten into trouble—trouble caused by Maxwell Peary—Phoebe had left her job without following any official procedures. Just yesterday, she had even received a notice from the company. It stated she was dismissed for her "unexplained departure" and would have to pay a contractual penalty.
So, although she had returned, she couldn’t go directly to the Financial Departnt. She first needed to find the Special Assistant.
Unfortunately, Alan Morgan had already resigned that morning, so the position of Special Assistant was vacant.
Her only option was to try and make an appointnt through the Secretary Departnt.
"I’m sorry, the Secretary Departnt is very busy at the mont, and all the phone lines are tied up. Perhaps you could wait a little longer?" the receptionist said with a smile, looking at Phoebe Walker. Who would have thought the once arrogant Phoebe Walker would see a day like this?
"I must see Mr. Peary this afternoon. Otherwise, I’ll call Shirley Grant directly," Phoebe Walker said, looking impatiently at the receptionist. She was seething. Back in the day, who in this company would have dared to show her such an attitude?
"Shirley Grant is no longer an employee at MC Group. She has resigned."
Phoebe Walker was taken aback, her eyes widening in surprise. "Resigned?"
What the hell? Has that little bitch Shirley Grant lost her mind? It wasn’t easy for to get transferred out of the Secretary Departnt. Shirley could have lorded it over everyone there, and yet she just foolishly resigned? Heh, it’s true what they say: man proposes, God disposes.
"So both Shirley Grant and Alan Morgan have resigned?" Phoebe Walker mumbled, her eyebrows knitting together. What on earth were those two playing at?
"Yes."
"Then call Nia Mitchell. She must be the head of the Secretary Departnt now. I never imagined she was so calculating."
Phoebe Walker’s lips were painted a stark red, which, against her pale complexion, made her look particularly unsettling.
