Maxwell Peary watched her like this and said nothing. Ti flowed by warmly.
「The next day.」
Dressed entirely in black, Nia Mitchell sat in the CEO’s car; the atmosphere felt particularly oppressive. Maxwell Peary remained expressionless, yet his entire being exuded sadness. Nia Mitchell only had to feel with her heart to sense his dejection. Silence filled the car. Soon, he drove to Yancy Hastings’ house.
This was Nia Mitchell’s first ti visiting such a place: an old mansion in the Military District, ho only to high-ranking officers.
"Ti to get out," Maxwell Peary said faintly. The sky had been clear just the day before, but as they got out of the car, a light rain began to fall.
Nia Mitchell stood next to the CEO, both of them sharing an umbrella. Her small hand gripped his large one tightly, wanting to lend him strength. Maxwell Peary glanced at her but said nothing.
Silence reigned. The heavy atmosphere was suffocating, and wreaths were everywhere. In the center was a photo of Yancy Hastings in his military uniform, looking exceptionally dashing and heroic.
Uncle.
It was too hard to accept—how could a perfectly healthy person suddenly just...
Was this what it ant to be a soldier?
Nia Mitchell lowered her head, but her attention was drawn by the sound of a car pulling up behind them.
Fiona Sutton, her face ashen, slowly erged from the car and walked towards them, step by step.
Tears instantly stread down her cheeks.
She wanted to ask him, why did he break his promise?
If he couldn’t fulfill that promise, why make it in the first place?
Charles Northwood parked the car and imdiately opened an umbrella, stepping over to shelter her beneath its wide arc. "Take care of yourself. You’re not alone now."
Fiona froze, then slowed her pace. Each step felt exceptionally heavy. Before her eyes, she saw Yancy Hastings’ arrogant expression.
"I will take care of myself." Her words seed a response to Charles Northwood, yet also a murmur to herself.
"He’s an irresponsible man," Fiona suddenly spoke up. Her voice wasn’t loud, but those standing nearby could hear her clearly.
He had so many promises he didn’t keep.
He’d clearly promised to co back.
"Didn’t you ask to wait for you?" Fiona suddenly cried out. Standing so distance away, she found herself unable to take another step. Her legs felt as heavy as if weighed down by imnse iron blocks; she couldn’t move an inch.
Fiona, deathly pale like this, looked terrifying.
Tears fell instantly.
She stood there, allowing Charles Northwood to support her as they moved closer, step by step.
Zion Hastings ca out. Seeing Fiona approach, his heart grew heavy. "Miss Sutton."
He walked over. Although he didn’t know the extent of his son’s relationship with her, still... "Please go back."
She shouldn’t be here.
Fiona stood there, her head lowered. "I want to see him."
"There’s no body," Zion Hastings stated flatly. No corpse. What was there to see?
Hearing this, Fiona’s entire body trembled.
"Why do you say he’s dead? There’s no body, is there? Why didn’t you keep looking for him? He said he would co back!"
Why had they given up?
She wanted to find him herself, but...
She didn’t know where he had disappeared, or where he had last been seen.
She wanted to search the entire world for him, but she didn’t know where to begin.
"He said he’d be responsible! I agree, I agree now! Didn’t he say he’d take responsibility?" she murmured, looking at his huge black-and-white photograph.
I’m pregnant. You have to be responsible. You *must*.
