Nia Mitchell froze. A gift? Is this a good idea? She didn’t think the CEO would need such things. However, Frederick Goldsmith’s expression was so serious that it made her wonder if she really should do as the butler said. After so thought, Nia Mitchell took out her phone and called Evelyn Peary.
"Evelyn?"
From the other end of the line, Nia Mitchell heard only Maxwell Peary’s choked sobs, and she instantly frowned.
"Sister-in-law..." Evelyn Peary trailed off, wiping her tears. "Why did no one tell ? By the ti I got there, it was all over."
Evelyn Peary stood before Yancy Hastings’ tombstone, holding an umbrella.
Why? How could Yancy Hastings be dead? Soone so proud, so flamboyant—he was incredibly capable. How could he possibly die? To hell with sacrifice! He, Yancy Hastings, would never give his life to the country!
"Evelyn," Nia Mitchell called out, her heart aching for her. She had previously wondered why she hadn’t seen Evelyn Peary at Yancy Hastings’ funeral. So that was it... Evelyn hadn’t even known.
"Sister-in-law, he isn’t really dead, is he? This is all a lie, isn’t it?" Evelyn Peary pleaded, walking forward step by step to gently touch the photograph on the tombstone. It can’t be.
"Evelyn, where are you?"
Evelyn Peary didn’t answer, only continuing to cry as she gazed at the photograph of Yancy Hastings.
"Evelyn?"
"I’m fine. I just want to be alone for a while, Sister-in-law." Her voice trembled. "Can you... can you call Mom and ask her to co back?" Evelyn Peary slowly clenched her fists. "Please, ask Mom to co back... Call Mom back..."
Nia Mitchell nodded repeatedly. "Okay, I’ll call her right now. Try not to be too sad. I’ll call Mom imdiately."
Hearing the helplessness in Evelyn Peary’s voice, Nia Mitchell thought, At a ti like this, family must be her only support.
Only after hanging up did Nia Mitchell rember that she didn’t have Silvia Waterborne’s phone number.
"Mr. Goldsmith!"
Hearing Nia Mitchell’s voice, Frederick Goldsmith imdiately ca out from the kitchen. "What is it?"
"Mr. Goldsmith, do you have Mom’s contact information?"
"I do..."
Having obtained Silvia Waterborne’s phone number, Nia Mitchell imdiately dialed it. The phone rang for a long ti before it was answered.
"Hello? Who is this?"
Silvia Waterborne, in makeup and a period costu, was sitting on a chair.
"Mom, it’s Nia Mitchell," she quickly introduced herself.
"Oh, Nia! What’s wrong? Did Maxwell Peary bully you?"
"No, no, it’s not that. It’s... Yancy Hastings... he sacrificed himself. Evelyn and the others are terribly upset..." Nia Mitchell explained briefly.
Silvia Waterborne was stunned by Nia’s words, finding them hard to believe. Yancy Hastings... sacrificed himself?
"I understand. I’ll return to the country imdiately." Silvia Waterborne’s usual cheerfulness vanished, her expression turning serious.
After hanging up, she spoke to the Director, quickly removed her makeup, and booked the soonest flight back.
Nia Mitchell looked at her phone and slowly went upstairs.
Upstairs, the study was filled with a haze of smoke.
When Maxwell Peary saw Nia Mitchell enter, he imdiately extinguished the cigarette in his hand and went to open the window.
"Why didn’t you open the window while you were smoking?" Nia Mitchell asked, walking over to his side.
"You must be very tired too. Go get so rest. I’ll take care of a few things and then co keep you company," Maxwell Peary said, standing by the window, letting the wind blow on his face.
