"Kenny, wake up." Hearing a familiar voice calling away from my sleep, I turned away from it.
But I was hugged, pecked, and nuzzled endlessly with Henry’s hair or sothing scratching all over, and eventually, I was helped up and brought into the bathroom, where I finally opened my eyes to see Henry with a black... moustache??
I nearly punched him in the face reflexively.
"What the hell is that?" I asked him in horror, the sleepiness washed away.
"Do you like it? Ethan found this in the attic and gave it to ." He asked excitedly with his imaginary tail waggling.
"HELL NO!" I grabbed the mustache and ripped it off from his upper lip.
Henry covered his mouth and looked at with feigned hurt.
"You said I was handso."
"You. Not the mustache." I stuck the mustache against the mirror before opening the bathroom closet and grabbing the toothbrush and toothpaste.
"Since when are you awake?"
"An hour or so. The staff sergeant said that he’ll take us close to the city if we are ready in twenty minutes."
"Okay." I an, we could teleport, but okay.
"I haven’t tested the contact lenses because I wanted to do it together."
Ah. So just the mustache.
I was already in the midst of brushing my teeth and gave him a head pat, which prompted him to stick to my back and make washing up harder, though not impossible.
When I was ready, I conjured up the contact lenses my grandma let touch for a few seconds while Henry pulled his out of his pants, and we both put them in with difficulties.
When we were finished, our gaze first looked for the other in the mirror.
Wow. I was looking at the reflection of Henry before everything had started, without his inhuman blue eye color.
"You look exactly like before," Henry whispered, seeming a bit nervous and maybe uncomfortable.
Figured, we had only a good relationship after my eyes had beco bright red.
I finally looked at myself in the mirror and felt as if I were seeing a stranger.
"These are good quality." They didn’t look fake; heck, they looked more real than our real eye colors.
"Yeah. Co get clothed." Henry pushed out of the bathroom, and on the way, I put away the remote control cars.
I changed my clothes, ignoring the spectator, and when I was finished and turned around, I found Henry avoiding my gaze.
"Co here and kiss ; then you’ll get accustod to my new eye color." Can’t have him constantly being insecure when we go out today to look around.
Henry instantly ca closer and cupped my face.
"I am sorry for everything back then."
"Pfft. Don’t be dumb." I pulled him closer and planted my lips on his, glad that we got rid of the mustache.
Firstly, because it looked super gay, and secondly, because Henry could rival any woman with the nice way his skin and lips felt, so it would be such a downgrade.
Thirdly, nowadays nobody walks around with a mustache, so we would attract more attention with him wearing one.
Seeing Henry getting into it, with him grabbing the back of my head and pressing my body against his, I shoved his face away like you would do with a dog that licked your face too enthusiastically.
"We didn’t kiss yesterday evening," he said, as if that was a reasonable excuse.
"You said we have to go."
"Ah." He contemplated for a second before coming closer again.
"It just ca to that we still have a bit of ti."
He licked over my lips as if asking for entry, so I let him and pulled him further down to while tilting my head to reach him deeply.
I had instinctively closed my eyes, but when I opened them, I found his humanly blue eyes watching as well... looking like the guy who was absolutely destroyed back then but now seed like a whole new person.
I still can’t believe these things are, anwhile, so normal between us.
I finally pulled away and turned back, getting my breathing in order before I walked to the door.
"Ready?"
"Yes." He was soon behind with his long legs and hugged , hanging on as we left the room and walked down the corridor.
"..." My grandmother stood at the end of the steps, with Ethan by her side, not reacting to us.
"Good morning?" I greeted cautiously, a bit apologetic because of the paranoid fit I had displayed yesterday.
Instead of answering , she looked at Ethan, and Ethan cleared his throat.
"Good morning."
"Okay. What’s up with you? Are you bidding us goodbye? Where is the staff sergeant?" I asked my silent grandmother, who was glaring at viciously.
She again looked at Ethan, and he coughed lightly before again speaking.
"We aren’t here to bid you goodbye, but just taking a look around the house."
Mhm, and because of that, you stand still on the last step of the staircase.
He continued,
"The staff sergeant is already in the car. And..." He looked at my grandmother, and seeing her nod impatiently at him, he finished what he was apparently told to say.
"Mrs. Howard is not speaking to convicts unrelated to her..." Ethan gazed at apologetically.
Petty as fuck, like always—I am not even surprised anymore.
"What about ? I am also a convict." Henry pointed at himself.
My grandma harrumphed at him and went up the stairs without another word, while Ethan lightly bowed to us and followed her.
"Pfft." I laughed while leaving the house with Henry and getting blinded by the morning sun.
I had been ignored by family mbers before, but never so adorably. Look at the old hag not wanting to talk to but at the sa ti scared that I would think she was doing the sa as my father and siblings had done.
Henry laughed along with as we crossed the garden and exited the garden door to see a dark green military Jeep that sohow looked completely new.
"Get in!" The staff sergeant was leaning against the driver’s door and smiled when he saw us.
I looked back again at the house because I had a feeling and saw my grandmother standing at so window on the first floor and pulling the curtain shut the mont I caught her.
After I waved at the window, I opened the car door for Henry and entered after he was inside.
"Where are the guys?" I asked the staff sergeant while putting the seatbelt on.
The staff sergeant had entered the car as well and adjusted the rearview mirror.
"They are currently doing different tasks, mostly killing rats every few nights, but today they are part of the city patrol."
"Ah." I looked out of the window after the car started as we drove away from the house.
Then I rolled the window down and held my hand out, thinking of the first ti I left the prison on the bus to the destroyed South District with cuffs on my wrists.
"How does it look inside the city?" I asked the old man and turned to look at Henry, who was so far away from compared to usual.
But the mont he felt my gaze, he turned away from the window on his side and looked at with a grin.
I chuckled silently and turned back again.
Damn it! He just grinned—no reason for my heart to act out.
"I wanted to warn you when we are closer to the city, but I will do that now. There aren’t many officers or soldiers around during the day because the governnt feared the civilians attacking them on a large scale, starting a civil war. This ans that the city is mostly left to itself during the day, and at night the military cleans up," the staff sergeant explained.
That sounds like my friends are doing dangerous work currently.
"And what exactly does that an?" Henry asked with a disbelieving laugh.
"It ans most of the civilians are still doing the work they are assigned to, but not all, so be careful."
"I don’t know what’s better, the police on every corner or not there at all," I chuckled.
"We do not have as many forces available as you might think because this city is big, and we were locked down rather fast. That ans we have a few posts in each district, but not to the point we can watch over everything. Additionally, if an officer or soldier is attacked during the day, we have fewer people to hunt the initial fiend during the night. Then, you can’t let the people you have work twenty-four hours, as they need to rest; the forces we have can’t be mobilized around the clock," the old man explained while driving around the long dirt road through the beautiful cornfields.
"What work are the civilians getting assigned to?" I asked.
"Agricultural work, though not in this vicinity because this land is technically not part of the city, though it is inside the lockdown zone. Workers are needed to process corn, plant and harvest vegetables, in the power stations, and for city maintenance; a lot of people able to do the most necessary repairs have to stand ready. We have been thoroughly abandoned by the country."
"Makes sense. But are you allowed to say sothing against the country?" I chuckled.
"I was part of your lot’s rescue mission and responsible for closing the portal before your grandmother blew the place up. I have done worse already."
"Ahahaha!" True.
He was a living example that people in love turn into the most dangerous idiots.
