On the forum, Marco was typing as fast as he could on a phone keyboard.

[Just went 0-2. Rostock header again - their striker is physically dominant, their midfielders are controlling the centre completely. Schalke's attacking mid keeps running into the sa defensive midfielder and losing it. Substitute on the bench - number 38.]

[Is that the one from the video?]

Three replies in under thirty seconds.

[Has to be. Check the number.]

[Dark hair, number 38 - that's him.]

[Put him on! Their midfield is doing nothing!]

Marco read the thread, looked up at the bench.

Think he's warming up at halfti, Marco typed. Will update.

The first half ended without Schalke generating a single shot on target.

Daniel didn't wait for the players to file in. He was already in the tunnel when the whistle blew. The players followed in the particular silence of a group that knows what's coming and has no useful counter-argunt.

Mateo looked at the tunnel where Daniel had just disappeared, then at the pitch, then back at Lev.

He hadn't expected this. He'd assud a few minutes late in the ga - enough to get so air, prove he could function at this level, give Daniel data for future decisions. A second-half start was a different proposition entirely. Forty-five minutes, 0–2 down, against a squad of professional n who had spent most of their careers playing at a level significantly above this one.

He began jogging along the touchline.

The ga was simple enough in its logic: Rostock owned the centre. Every attempt to play through the middle had ended with Chetkovic or Byinlich in possession. The solution was to move the ball before they could position - one touch, maximum, and always with soone moving ahead of the pass rather than waiting for it. Whether his teammates could adapt to that speed was a separate question.

He'd find out in the second half.

In the dressing room, Daniel had kicked over the tactics board. The sound carried faintly through the tunnel. The players on the bench exchanged glances. Sdley Lev settled back into his seat.

Mateo kept jogging.

In the stands, Marco had the phone up and was filming the warm-up.

In the dressing room, Daniel's voice was loud enough to be audible well into the corridor.

"Tactics. Running. Movent. Did you eat all of that? I'm asking. Did you hear a single word I said this morning?" He paused, presumably for effect, because no one was going to answer.

"Quick passing, midfield to defence linking up, wide movent when we lose the ball. I said all of this. Halim - are you with ? Are you actually in this building?"

Halim said nothing. He knew the address was not genuinely asking for a response.

"You're coming off," Daniel said. The room was very quiet. "And if the next forty-five minutes look anything like the last forty-five, there will be conversations about roster positions this week that nobody in this room wants to have." He looked around the group. "Quick passes. Trust the run. When Silva gets the ball - find him and move. That's all I'm asking."

He walked out.

The players looked at each other.

Ben Kehi found a bottle of water and drank half of it. He looked at the tactical board on the floor, then at the door Daniel had left through, then at the space on the bench where Halim was sitting.

"Fresh start," he said, to nobody in particular.

The second half was about to begin.

Mateo stood in the tunnel, waiting for the referee's signal. Halim stood beside him for a mont, the man he was replacing, going the other way. Halim didn't say anything. He looked at the pitch briefly, then at the ground, then walked back into the dressing room without looking back.

Mateo stepped into the afternoon light.

The mont his feet touched the grass, the system triggered.

[Mission activated: Perfect Debut.]

[Level: D through SSS - reward scales with completion.]

[Begin.]

He read it once, filed it, and walked to his position in the centre of the pitch.

The referee blew for the restart.
