The ga reset.

Magdeburg's players were quiet during the restart - not rattled, but recalibrating. Their coach Jones, who had been relaxed on the sideline for most of the first ten minutes, was standing now. He didn't say anything imdiately. He just watched.

What he'd seen from Mateo in the last sixty seconds had changed his read of the match.

The La Croqueta was the kind of move that you either knew about or you didn't, and once you'd seen it you couldn't exactly unsee it. His defensive midfielder - Marshall, the best ball-winner in the division, had been made to look like furniture. Kiplin Jason had been bypassed with the sa first touch. And the delivery that had ended with Benedict's goal had bent around two retreating centre-backs as though the laws of aerodynamics had been briefly suspended.

He turned to his assistant and said sothing. The assistant nodded.

On the pitch, Marshall had said nothing since the goal. He'd walked back to the centre circle with the considered pace of a man doing a recalculation. He wasn't angry. He was thinking.

The match continued.

With the score level, Magdeburg returned to their structure - wide, quick, looking to generate crosses for Neil. They hadn't abandoned the plan; they'd simply noted that the plan had a problem running through the centre and were filing it for later.

Schalke played through the middle. The instruction was clear from Daniel's touchline and from what Mateo was doing: quick, one or two touches, keep the ball moving before the press could form. Twice in the next five minutes, Ben Kehi played it to Mateo, received it back imdiately, and found Hardy Hant in space on the left before Magdeburg could shift. The width opened up.

Jones watched from the other side of the pitch. He could see it developing.

The kid was running the ga. Not just playing in it - determining the tempo, making the decisions about when to accelerate and when to hold, using his teammates as moving parts in sequences that he was constructing in real ti. In thirty years of football Jones had seen midfielders who could pass and midfielders who could read a ga. The ones who could do both simultaneously were sothing else.

He hadn't expected to see that here.

He made his decision on the next Schalke build-up.

Mateo received from Lloyd Angelo with space in front of him - a few tres of open pitch, no imdiate pressure. He moved forward and the lines updated in his vision: a red thread toward Benedict, pulling left to create the angle. He accelerated through the space.

Tobias Felix committed to cutting him off. Mateo played it early to Ben Kehi and moved past Felix on the outside. Ben Kehi returned it first-ti into the space Mateo had run into.

The one-two again. Simple. Effective.

He was now on the edge of Magdeburg's area with the ball at his feet and the defensive line backpedalling. A red line appeared toward Benedict, pushed wide right. He drove his right foot through the ball-

"Ma—"

Tom stopped himself. He was watching sothing he couldn't imdiately parse. The ball had been struck hard and low, skimming the grass, and it was heading through the gap between the two centre-backs at a pace that the goalkeeper could certainly deal with. That was what it looked like for about a second and a half.

Then it stopped looking like that.

The spin caught the turf a tre before the goal line and the ball moved right - sharply, as though the original trajectory had been a feint. Benedict, who had already started his run to the right, was precisely where the ball arrived. He took one touch to set and tucked it inside the near post.

Fweet-!

2–1.

Tom sat back.

"I'm going to take a mont," he said into the mic, "because I want to describe that correctly." A short pause. "What Mateo Silva just did was play a ground-level outside-of-foot pass with enough sidespin that the ball maintained a straight-line trajectory through a defensive gap, then deviated right on contact with the turf. The deviation was not a deflection. It was the spin he put on the ball at the mont of contact. He played it exactly to where Benedict was going to be" Another pause. "Benedict barely had to adjust. The ball ca to him."

[I need to watch that back. The ball moved.]

[How does a ground pass curve like that? That's not normal.]

[He struck it like a shot but it was a pass. You can see where he was looking.]

[The striker just had to run. The pass did everything else.]

The celebrations were enthusiastic and briefly disorganised. Ben Kehi got there before anyone, then Hardy Hant, then the backs arriving late having run further than the situation strictly required. Mateo stood in the middle of it and let it happen.

He was already thinking about the next phase. Magdeburg had scored from the right wing, Bowen's delivery had been sharp and Neil had punished the aerial mismatch. The solution wasn't to suddenly defend headers better; it was to stop them getting to the byline in the first place. Which ant pressure on Sitney Parker's side, which ant Lloyd Angelo needed to push wider in the defensive structure.

He'd ntion it to Lloyd before the restart.

In the stand, the man with the dark red bag had his notebook open for the first ti. He wrote two sentences, looked at the pitch, and wrote a third.

He put the pen down and watched.

He wanted to see how many different ways this kid could do it.
