The ball cleared the wall.

Not over the top of it - through the gap to the left, the spin holding its line until the last mont. The goalkeeper had read the angle, was already shifting right toward where the spin suggested it was going.

Then the ball hit the turf.

The lateral spin kicked. The ball moved right - sharply, definitively, away from the goalkeeper's shifting weight. It was heading for the back post, where nobody was standing, where nobody had thought to stand, because nobody had thought that was where the ball was going.

Hant had thought it.

He'd been watching Mateo's run-up, watching the body angle, and sothing about the alignnt told him the near post wasn't the target. He'd peeled off his run at the last mont, changed direction, arrived at the back post just as the ball did.

He didn't need to do anything complicated with it. The ball arrived at his feet at the right height. He stuck his boot out.

SWISH!

Fweet—!

4–2.

84th minute.

For a second the Garden Stadium was quiet, the collective delay of eight thousand people processing whether what they had just watched was what they thought it was.

Then it wasn't quiet at all.

Hant had already taken his shirt off before the ball finished moving in the net. He sprinted toward the technical area with his arms wide and his mouth open, not heading for anyone specific, just running because standing still wasn't possible. Benedict got to him first. Then Wheeler Angelo. Then the backs arriving from fifty tres back.

Wickliff stepped off the technical area and found himself in the middle of it without quite deciding to join. He accepted this and put his arms around the nearest players.

Daniel, from the technical area, pumped his fist once. Then he turned and looked at the Magdeburg bench.

Jones was standing with his arms crossed, looking at the pitch. Not at the celebration - at Mateo, who had not run anywhere. Who was standing near the corner flag watching his teammates, a faint expression on his face that might have been a smile or might just have been the late afternoon light.

In the stand, the man with the Manchester United bag had his notebook open.

He'd been watching the free kick from the mont Mateo placed the ball. He'd watched the run-up, the body angle, the contact point. He'd watched the ball travel toward what appeared to be empty space and arrive, precisely, where a player materialised to et it.

He wrote three sentences.

He looked at what he'd written, then back at the pitch, then at the notebook again.

The first sentence: Passes to positions, anticipates movent before it happens.

The second: Free kick delivered to an empty back post teammate ran into it.

The third: 17 years old. German Third Division. Two matches.

He closed the notebook.

He stood up, picked up his bag, and walked toward the exit. The match still had six minutes left. He didn't need them. He'd seen what he ca to see and then so.

On the pitch.

With ten n, Felix unable to foul, and Marshall running on empty after ninety minutes of trying to contain a player who had simply gone around him every ti, Magdeburg had nothing left to threaten with. Their crosses were less accurate. Neil was winning fewer headers. The urgency that had brought them level at 3–2 had dissipated into the particular deflation of a side that had made their best push and watched it co up short.

Marshall watched the final minutes from his position in midfield.

He'd fouled Mateo four tis in this match. Two of them had been caught by the referee, one of them hadn't been called, one of them had been clipped back at the shin with enough force that he'd felt it himself on the follow-through. He'd done what he'd co to do, and none of it had worked.

The kid had got up every ti. Had shown no fear, no change in his movent pattern, no tendency to avoid contact. Had kept receiving the ball in tight spaces, kept turning, kept finding the pass. And when Marshall had finally stopped being useful as a marker - when the legs started costing more than they gave, the Brazilian had just run him until his positioning broke down and played over the top of him.

He didn't like it. But he'd been in football long enough to know what he was seeing.

Fweet—! Fweet—! Fweet—!

Full ti.

The Schalke players found each other on the pitch. Benedict threw his arm around Mateo's shoulder. Lloyd Angelo shook hands with Ward Clarence. Babi Edgar clapped his gloves together twice.

Mateo looked at the scoreboard.

4–2.

Two matches. One goal. Seven assists. He thought about the attribute panel, still grey in most of its columns. He thought about the free kick landing where it had landed, and the 85% line that had told him it would, and the teammate who had read his body language and run to et it.

He thought about how much of that had been him and how much had been the system, and whether the distinction mattered.

He started walking toward the tunnel.

[4-2! That's our youth team! The German Third Division and we're playing like Barcelona!]

[Seven assists in two matches!]

[That last free kick, I thought he played it to an empty spot. His teammate hadn't even started moving.]

[I don't understand how he knew. I really don't.]

In the corridor beneath the stand, the man with the Manchester United bag was already outside.
